2004 I & E Solo. Amazing, even plays part of it with his elbow. He was a member of the Blue Devils, and this solo got him 1st place.

This is my homie from High School, actually just got home from having a drink with him when he told me about this video. Let me tell you, Ivan is anything BUT cocky, he is a very down-to-earth, laid back, great guy. He did everything he could to down-play this performance, but it is way better than he described. Ivan is the man, a great drummer, and an even better person. Good work, buddy!

YO 18 years later and I still remember this man's name to look up this epic snare solo . I used to practice this as a kid! You're the man Ivan!

All the "cocky" comments are making me laugh. I know Ivan personally and had the privilege of working with him as a performer and I took lessons with him. He is the complete opposite of cocky. He's one of the most down to earth people I've ever met and very approachable. His style is just different. He has lots of fun when he plays and has lots of confidence. I can see why some people would confuse that for being cocky, but he's not.

There is NOTHING cocky about this. Obviously you people are wayyy jealous of his skill level and wish to do the same shit. He just happen to MASTER the snare. Its practice, dedication, and ALOT of discipline to MASTER anything in life. This is what this guy does every single day of his life. Its his job. People just don't know how to think and don't know how to feel anything now a days.

I think what people like @RCRhythm are forgetting is that if you just LISTEN, it's enjoyable. The guy takes just a snare drum and gets your heading bobbing. All that matters in the end is, does it feel good? Does it groove? Hell yes, and the techniques are just the cherry on top. I've been watching this video for years because it's what a drum solo should be about: technique and FUN.

That is awesome. I've been teaching drumline now for about 5 years, and I wish I could have students who played that well.... But yes, I agree with the people who have posted on here. Don't say he is cocky after just watching the video. It's called showmanship, and drumline is all about attitude. I know he is cocky in real life, but in this video, it serves him well. He plays great, and I'm totally going to steal the groove at 1:37 for my line next year. Well done.

If you guys are seriously complaining about his "cockiness" in this... you're just wrong... this is I&E's - THE time to let this kind of playing loose during drum corps season. And honestly if you don't want to LOOK the part performing in a solo competition, don't even bother trying to win.

Yeah, I am a drummer, and getting a response from the crowd, but only because of the cocky way he's playing and the how impressive his playing is. It's like when I'm watching DCI videos with my school's drumline, and everyone's saying "oh look, they're so clean," or "look at those stick heights!" and all I can think is, there's more to music than this.

That guys got amazing control with his left hand for playing traditional grip. Even when I was drum captain in marching band, I just couldn't get as good with traditional grip as I was with match grip, because I had been playing match for 10 years. Wish I had that much control with the left.
@MarilynRouth

The frustrating thing is that people do not understand the difference between playing and playing well. The unisons, the balance between the different voices, the dynamic range, Timekeeping, flow. This guy is a Slayer and has perfected all aspects. Its funny when people boast about being able to play in this way when really some of the crap that some people produce shouldn't even be heard. Amateurs...

If what you're trying to say is that music gets tiring when it doesn't develop in any way or just sounds like a technical exercise, then obvviously we are in complete agreement. Just a language thing. No worries! :)

You misunderstand my words. The rudimental playing I'm referring to is technical rudimental playing. Every note down to single strokes is all some form of a rudiment. What I was referring to was the different technical combos of rudiments. You can only make combos for so long before you run out of options and your solo is one huge repeating section. You can only play flam drag to cheese or flam 5 combos and diddles for so long.

Other way round, kid. Whether he won or not, I'm sure he was proud that he played his ass off, technically, musically, and with an eye for entertainment as well. No one should ever be satisfied with being sloppy or sucky, and that's the lesson music really has to teach.
