The 1952 film was a triumph. This (1982) version was very good. 'Ivanhoe' (Walter Scott) of course deserves to be better known

I'm glad that the boss eyed high priest was finally dismissed. Ivanhoe did a great job.

I can't believe that at such a tense, dramatic moment as this, the director and screenwriter let one of the greatest, most passionate actresses of the day utter only one word, "yes". I mean really!! Mayhap, in such a state of shock Rebecca might well and truly have been, with such strength and presence of mind only to say the one word from her pyre, but oh lamentable tragedy!! To have missed such that she would have cried out "yes, yes!! Truly do I take thee, from the depth of my soul, with my whole heart do I take thee as my champion, and in you... " She pauses, glancing down at the wood piled around her feet " do I place my life." Or it could have been more of a prayer: " I do take thee, sir. For God has answered my prayer and sent you at my most desperate hour." As she looks up at the Bishop with a mixture of defiance and resignation "and as all know, I serve the Lord, so I place myself in his hands," as she looks back at Sit William, "and yours" There, was that so hard!!! Whatever the words, Ms. Hussey and the audience were cheated, given a penny when a silver coin just just within reach.

You’re right, giving her just one weak, “Yes,” it’s comically lame 😂 I hereby submit that your recommendation be added to any further film interpretations of this story.

You should read the book Sir Bryan's fate came to him from God not Ivanhoe.

True,he dies from a heart attack or stroke brought on by his conflicting emotions. Yet even though I'm usually a stickler for fidelity to the original, find this version of the death of Brian much more emotionally satisfying.and touching.

It would of been funnier if Ivanhoe would of been like, "No you've got the wrong end of the stick me and my mine are literally just passing through the forrest. The timing is obviously unfortunate but I'm not here to fight for anyone in fact I couldn't give a toss what happens to her to be honest. Anyway as I've already ready said we are on our way to somewhere else so can't hang around indefinitely .. CHEERIO!!!" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

It's always polite to ask 😂 Honestly, I'l sure it was traditional to make sure nobody 'saved' a girl just to make her beholden to him. She had to have the option to say 'I'd rather die than be saved by YOU.' Obviously Ivanhoe knew Rebecca wouldn't say that to him, but it's the principle of the thing 🙂

Not in this instance of course; but if a guy offered to champion you merely to put you under obligation to him, a girl had to have the option to say no. Rebecca would have told Brian no if he'd offered.

Sir Walter Scott wrote the novel in the early 19th century in the UK. His own prejudices prevented him from believing that an old, Jewish man would give his life trying to save his daughter in a battle he could not conceivably win.
@waterbear46
@waterbear46 2 года назад
Brian is one of the best warriors around, there is no way old man with no military experience could hope to fight him, if he had and lost (which he would, even if Brian was willing to go easy on him and give him a chance, there is no way he could kill him) Rebecca would be dead. So he rather waited for someone competent to show up, since that would give her a better chance.

@@waterbear46 Dad stepping forward would not preclude a champion from showing up after. In fact Dad COULD delay the proceedings and buy time by acting. You do not have children.
@waterbear46

@@penultimateh766 He had already tried to bargain for her life and was refused, there was no reason to believe they wouldnt simply drag him away. He was a jew, they considered him inferior and disgusting. They wouldnt think twice before silencing him. Plus simply draging the old man away wouldnt give her much time, especially since there could be another templar setting her on fire at the same moment. And its pretty bold statement to say I dont have kids since you know me by one random comment...

Yet the beautiful woman could never match the stunning teenager. A problem for many females in that business. Too good looking at 15 is a burden later on.
