One thing that I discovered as I watched him from up close: He is incredibly physical, visceral almost, in his command of the keyboard. A lot of heavy labored breathing, writhing almost, humming, mumbling (not as audible though as Gould)...

I mean, let's face it: This is simply one of the best piano recitals every played in the entire history of classical music. A great and well-staged sequence of works, technically brilliant playing beyond words and, most importantly, a performance so full of whit and ingenuity and wisdom. Could listen to this all day.
@@edwindepianist Yes, he's become a very tortured and withdrawn man, it seems. It's very sad. There are very very few geniuses of the piano - and he is certainly one of them. I wish him a great rebirth.
@@edwindepianist That's interesting, Edwin, that in your comment you're taking the point of view of "piano playing" in regard to Pogorelich. Obviously he has a love affair with that instrument and it goes without saying he is a master of it, but to me, it seems he is searching for something that transcends the piano. To master the instrument so one can soar beyond it - something like that. And in his later years - almost unrecorded, officially - it seems there is even an anger and hardness toward the piano (or perhaps not the piano: once again, beyond the piano - at life? at people? at the loss of his wife, as you mention?). I just don't know - surely there has been no greater Chopin player since Pogorelich came on the scene - but he has still only recorded a fraction of his music.......Ah, the whole thing is tragic.
I have never heard a Wilde Jagd reaching these heights of passion and climax, recording or otherwise. I think I would have cried if I had been present there, it really sounds like a miracle, it's not the technique, it's the strength of soul to pull it off.
Absolutely, I just herd part of this recording (not yet de hole recital, can't wait for it) and I got atonished by the etudes and Scarlatti!! never herd something like that in a live, such a power with out making the piano out of tune, nor even Cziffra, I should say, did this kind of result, I mean the arpeges of the Liszt's No. 10 etude, before the coda, never herd it like that.. Everything is breathtaking in this recording. Has anyone know if it ever went published as commercial rec?
What a program, my God! Not many pianist are able to perform a live recital with this kind of commitment. His Liszt is out of bounds. The level of finesse, technical control, attention to musical detail, and sheer strength is, simply put, beyond words.
The Carnegie Hall impeccable acoustics marvelously capture his singing tone. I gravitate to Chopin always, and the aching beauty of his mazurka interpretations took my breath away. The rubato was incredibly musical, not exaggerated, and supremely Chopin-esque. I loved the Brahms as well - - almost ascetic and slightly underplayed, which opens the listener to insights and nuances of these beautiful and mysterious pieces.
the program is emotionally devastating for any pianist, he, however, faces it with great humility and with sounds that I would say are from another planet. In Wilde Jagd he leaves life with the sounds he confronts us with, making wonderful juggling of each note and octaves. His technique is impeccable. We heard them at Tch1 in Montevideo years ago, it was different, it was praised and destroyed by critics. Irreverent I would say. His encore Scarlatti was unique, almost imperceptible in his gestures and great depth of sound. Disruptive and exciting. There are not two like him. Gould, mmmm, yes but in another style. Both geniuses.
An amazing artist! Phrasing, dynamics, overall control and virtuosity place Maestro Pogorelich in a most high class of world renown pianists! Bravo Maestro!!

I've always liked Pogorelich's Scriabin. He has the right combination of langor and drama needed to make these pieces come alive. I never heard him play the 4th sonata before and it doesn't disappoint. His recording of the 2nd sonata is amazing. I highly recommend that one too.
I heard this recital live and will never forget it; I'm so grateful that everyone can enjoy it now and understand the hights that this pianist reached at his peak! I find Pogorelich' conceptualisation of interpretation of today very interesting and I'm always ready to be shocked by his unique performances; I just regret that he obviously doesn't practice so much as he did in his early years and you can hear it very clearly!
I believe this recital is one of those immortal moments in music history where time stops.The Liszt Transcendental Etudes are played with a freshness and sense of discovery that leaves all the competition in the shade.
He really puts the 'Appassionata' in the 10th etude. Such daring, bold intensity, which no other performer (how tasteful they may be) has been able to achieve
That Ivo didn't record Scriabin's 4th Sonata when he recorded the 2nd Sonata is a crime against humanity. There are great performances of this electrifyingly ecstatic piece but this performance soared into the stratosphere.

And it seems insane to me that there are no quality (commercial) recordings of his live concerts - we have only these valiant, but poor pirate recordings (although we sure thank those pirates!). There's a massive historical precedent though: in an age of film, there is not one video recording of Rachmaninov playing. Unforgivable tragedy.
After all that brimstone and 64th note runs I didn’t expect him to also master the fragile glassy singing notes of Scriabin. But that is one of the best Scriabin performances I’ve heard. The treble notes sail like clouds above the uncertain earth. Incredible. And to think I was a concert pianist at the same time, I wish I had met him.

Around 1990, Pogo was in a prodigious state of musical blessing. Although record companies often do a mess mixing in an album recordings from very different years, I usually try to search the real year of recording. In Pogo's case, my golden time is from late 80s until the Gap at the middle of 90s. Particularly fascinating are the official videos of several concerts or recordings. Those years, his technique was hypnotic, in my POV. I am very grateful for those who put Pogo's material here because it is useful to propagate his music and save it from a possible disappearance.

Не сказала бы, что абсолютный. Султанов впереди Погорелича по целостности формы. П.- увлекающийся деталями, поэтому воспринимается как поток. Его темповое rubato иногда просто недопустимо, сочинение разваливается на глазах..

Toutes les œuvres sont divinement exécutées. Une telle perfection dans un récital est rare, la conduite rythmique et la dynamique sont tellement cohérentes au regard des esthétiques abordées. This recital was the one and only time I heard Pogorelich live. An outstanding concert that I remember well; thanks for posting the recording. Such a contrast to the perverse larghissimo banging into which Pogorelich's playing has degenerated since 2006.
Agreed, though I would add simply one of the geatest artists of all time, reaching beyond just the piano for something universal and universal to all of humanity.
Everyone pretty much mirrored what I feel about his piano interpretations. i grew up with his phonographs. My family would vacation in Yugoslavia while I was growing up and my relatives always gifted me his records when we'd visit. I have a stack of them still - and used them as inspiration for my own interpretations. But... Even though he looks really young here he was SO handsome.
thank you littlemy...the forces and beauty created in this recital are out of this world...no gravity...transcendental...super human...at 1:16:21 the intoxicating beauty of this scriabin sonata 4 is just incredible, the sound is so misterious and radical...coming from some mystical magical roots ...it is so original...genesis is here...the creation of energy...of the world...while parts of liszt etudes or islamey are so apocalyptic...black beauty... ivo´s alchemy of opposing creative and apocaliptical forces generates huge unmeasurable amounts of energy...way beyond beauty...and collapsing sound and silence...time and space... life and death...into an eternal moment of infinity....just confirms me again ivo is the greatest living pianist...maybe the greatest ever...of the past...of all time...and perhaps for very long...
В общем, весь концерт на одном дыхании прослушал. Соната Гайдна великолепная, мощная и мужественная первая часть с очень плотным звуком, великолепная вторая, лиричная и нежная и потрясающая третья, особенно великолепные тремоло на ля, просто блестящее исполнение, хотя я бы хотел, чтобы он ещё более изысканно сыграл трели в этой сонате, но такой подход не менее прекрасен, никакой жеманности, только брутальность и мощь. Брамс философский у Погорелича, очень лиричный, тонкий, сентиментальный и, в то же время, очень много мудрости, про технику вообще не пишу, тут все идеально. Единственное звук рояля не слишком интересен, но пианист все это компенсирует прекрасным цветным звучанием, которое было только у него. Лист вне конкуренции, этюды прекрасны, особенно фа минорный хорош, настоящая страсть и огонь, мощь и трагедия, пробирает. Блуждающие огоньки очаровательны, но чрезмерно быстрые, хотелось более плотного звука, слишком мелкие звуки, поток. Классный звук в дикой охоте. Наименее удачен цикл сонат Скарлатти, вроде и звук хорош, и настроение лихое, но скучно до ужаса, будто это не его музыка. Исключением является соната ми мажор, но его Скарлатти неинтересный, особенно после роскошного Гайдна, чудесного Брамса и настоящего огненного Листа. Такие же претензии к Шопену. У меня чувство, что в этих миниатюрах Погорелич не может раскрыться, так как в них ему не за что зацепиться, ему нужны вещи мощные и героические, а эти три бедные мазурки вообще сухие как древесная кора, хотя некоторая красота обнаруживается в эмоциональном исполнении фа диез минорной мазурки. Но после столь безынтересного цикла из Скарлатти и Шопена идёт потрясающий Скрябин. Звук идеальный, от восхитительного начала с этим прекрасным жемчужным верхним звуком, в котором и свежесть, и радость, и предвкушение любви и волшебства таинственной ночи, усеянной миллионами светил до восхитительных аккордовых структур в середине и в финале. Это та полётность, эйфория и сила, которую я слышу в этой сонате только у Погорелича, это тот русский символизм Скрябина и Бальмонта, который я обожаю, так и хочется слушать в этой музыке космические гармонии. Ну а исламей без слов. Только Иво мог его играть настолько безупречно! Спасибо за концерт, лучший пианист своего времени в золотой форме своей, да здравствует Иво Погорелич! да здравствует Югославия! Да здравствует великая сила музыки и любви!
I've always been amazed by the Islamey's recording from this concert. It was Pogorelich at this best (not his actual shade) so having the opportunity of hearing the entire recital is something magical. Thank you for this pearl dear uploader.
The Liszt is transcendental for sure ! Never heard something like this. Even if I had the talent, I wouldn't even have the strength in my arms and fingers to play like this for more than 10 minutes... I wonder what else he could do...

Just my comment here in 2021. I just saw his post from Nara Japan. He 63 yo now. Slowing down and becoming Buddhist like. He must have tons of memories. I wonder if he dreams of Belgrade. IF HE NEVER LEFT? He seem to me like he's a prodigy without a country. I dont know what he thinks. I think he lives in Lugano Switzerland for some unknown reason. But thats his story. But, I just think Ivan likes the Italian wines. Quiz: what do van cliburn, pogorlich, Horowitz, Richter, and, Scriabin have in common??

He might have skipped some repeats on purpose. I noticed the same thing in Scarlatti Sonata K 8, which is after the break. Ivo Pogorelich doesn't simply "overlook" something!
