Iwan Baan: Ingenious homes in unexpected places

In the center of Caracas, Venezuela, stands the 45-story "Tower of David," an unfinished, abandoned skyscraper. But about eight years ago, people started moving in. Photographer Iwan Baan shows how people build homes in unlikely places, touring us through the family apartments of Torre David, a city on the water in Nigeria, and an underground village in China. Glorious images celebrate humanity's ability to survive and make a home -- anywhere.

The conclusion to this session exemplifies the ingenuity of humans. Ignorance is abundant but creativity and innovation thrives. I enjoyed this very much. The bit about digging homes due to lack of materials is engineering at its finest. I wonder how they deal with heavy rains?

Said with this adorable Dutch way of presenting things and burst out laughing as of 12:35. Hygiene is the biggest concern though about so many people living with seemingly no proper toilet sewer system in place. Thank you Iwan Baan for this presentation and your kindness.

I agree with you Nelson Garcia. The tower of David has become a circus show for people outside Venezuela who do not have the slightest idea how big a problem it is for the city and the people who live on these structures designed for other purposes.

No matter how bad of a place to live that is its a place to live. It beats the hell out of being homeless. It would be nice if Venezuela got their shit together and figure out how to properly house their people but untill then people will do what they need to do. And that pretty cool.

neat to see that people all over the world have the ingenuity to build structures for shelter that fit their needs. I think of when i was small i was always looking for a tiny corner to enclose to play. used to play in boxes turning them into a "house" or throw a sheet over a table for walls or just tie the sheet for a tent. But those people live in their inventions.

Everyone here seems to have found a way to get basic resources though. Not only that, but a lot of them had technology, like the floating cinema, and photo studio (those fake pictures of people standing in other parts of the world had to be produced with either backdrops or a green screen) the band on that canoe with a mixer hooked up to a generator and there were apartments in the Torre David that had flatscreens on their walls.

I'd say your no doubt right. In a society filled with laws, your constantly stressed about meeting not only basic obligations for yourself, food clothing and shelter, but a bunch of extra stuff that you wouldn't worry about in the situations the guru in the video describes.

"There is a plague of sameness that is killing human joy." While I wouldn't say that it is a joy to be subjected to such circumstances which often are the result of poverty and the lack of sufficient government intervention to alleviate the situations, it is admirable how these people could make full use of what they have on hand, and adapt to situations we would otherwise classify to be abnormal. Abnormality in our eyes has become their definition of normal.

The fact that the audience found humorous that the people's choice of "design" was covering 'brick with brick wallpaper' left me outraged. How could you laugh and not find empathise with another human being that just wants a better place to live....and to make that place a home with love and care.

However I believe more should be done to help some of these groups of people. The ability to adapt to these living conditions does not mean that they are in fact living in desirable living conditions that are beneficial for the well-being of these people, especially in the case of living amidst garbage.

It wasn't a mocking laugh, it was basic laughter at the idea of covering the brick wall with brick print wallpaper.. people would laugh no matter if they were poor or rich. An idea like that has comedic value, I'm sure you've seen movies that displays such humor..

I feel Iwan Baan is romanticising poverty, and it's actually quite provoking how he's idealizing these people's lives as some sort of "admiration of humanity". He's wrong. I've lived in countries with high poverty. I've talked to people like those we see in this video. The reason why they may mind happiness and positive energy during those difficult circumstances is because humans are survivors. But rest assured, if they had the chance they'd move in a heartbeat to those newly constructed highrises and houses we see at the end of the video. Ironically, Iwan Baan has a negative view of those newly constructed houses which is even more mindboggling. What's his problem with these people getting a better quality of life?

I need the wonder of this explained. I see an educated man passing thru severely unfair situations. Effectively, like colonial British/India romanticising the despair. I know that the resistance to despair is admirable, for centuries we have known that people will adapt to any situation, but being able to adapt does not make this romantic, for the insincere it eases the conscience. What is the average life expectancy. How safe are the young girls/boys from being raped or traded. No real answers

This situation in Venezuela is unacceptable taking into account that we had the highest revenues from oil industry in our history during the last 14 years. 14 years was more than enough for Dubai, but not here because our government was unable to solve most of the basics problems of our people! Sorry but the world must to know the reality of my country.

Who sells the apartments in David's Tower? the "apartments" aren't for free. There's a lot of gangs (I also know that not everybody living there are bad people) in there: once a worker from Costa Rica embassy was kidnapped and were found there. Yes, in David's Tower. As a Venezuelan I found this offensive.

No one is claiming it to be funny or the solution for the lack of homes here. And why so angry at the photographer? If anything, he is dignifying the portrayed communities with their DEFINITELY ingenious and creative solutions to overcome such necessity conditions, while creating awareness in the otherwise “clueless” developed countries that such bad living conditions are still in place ...

Now you have all these architects praising torre de David as an example of IDK what (originality?)... I dare you to go live there or in any other slum in Caracas and tell me if that is a real model of architecture or just recipe for chaos... its easy to praise something you do not really understand specially when u come from a first world country, this soooo celebrated slum model doesnt solve any of the problems of the people it creates more and more problems
@armintaavila4056
@armintaavila4056 6 лет назад
He's not praising torre de David as an example of creativity. It's nt the point. The point is how humans can adapt to every type of condition and besides of the circumstances we empower those spaces and make them ours.

Shoots might be good, people might seem very happy...I have to admit it, but due to critics about my comments, I must say Mr. Baan has been too much subtle, using hints. This should be evidence against many countries' corruption. TED is also a way to show evidence of countries' corruption.
