Doing some spray tests. I only use the rp for clear which I spray at 29psi, not sure what you'd spray waterborne at.

I watch a lot of spray gun reviews and always read a lot of the comments..it goes to show that it really comes down to what personally feels good for yourself, for example here I'm reading many people like iwatas , I watch an Aussie guy who favours devilbiss pro and pro lite. And there are devilbiss is fans there . I know there are also people who swear by satajets an , so I'm guessing it comes down to individual taste and what feels right in the hand, along with knowing what you're doing of course..thanks for showing the spray patterns, very interesting

I know you posted this comment 2 years ago so maybe you’ll see it, maybe you won’t. What you said is 100% true, but it all comes down to skill. I have a WS400 and it’s my favourite gun out of any I’ve ever used. However, I’ve used a MasterCraft and a Vaper and if you can have the skill, you can get iwata/devilbiss/Sata quality jobs with low budget non-pro guns. I ran into a situation where a friend of mine was gonna spray a vehicle and I happened to show up and didn’t have time to drive to my house and grab my gun so I sprayed his car for him as he is inexperienced, and I sprayed it with his $40 brand new garbage Vaper HVLP Gravity fed gun, and as long as you set it how you feel is good, test shoot something to “read” it’s spray, and go with it, you’ll get perfect results, as I did. I would have rather used my Ws400, but a Vaper didn’t model a Fine Silver Birch base coat, and laid a perfect glassy clear coat. I’m a fan of Iwata, and I have an opinion that DeVilbiss was king back in the day, but Iwata and Sara are taking over. My father has 40 years of experience and has painted many vehicles that have been sold on Barret Jackson’s auction line up and he swore by DeVilbiss. I convinced him to use my WS400 on a 64 Fairlane and he immediately bought a WS400, was super impressed and to quote him, he said to me “That gun takes the w out of work. My DeVilbiss is taking over as my new primer gun. I’ve never seen a gun lay clear like that!”. Mind you, I had a PPS 2.0 system in it, which he’s never used. And his guns like 6 years old and he rarely uses anything else because some painters don’t clean properly and you never know if a clean looking gun is gonna spit a hidden piece of solid clear into the paint, or maybe clog the tip. I also lent it to an old school DeVilbiss fan, who’s a friend of his and used to be one of my fathers employees, and he told me he’d rather stick to his Tekna because he prefers how it sprays. So again, you’re completely correct, but most of a guns finish comes down to the guy pulling the trigger. I also own an ANI F160 as a primer gun and I tried spraying clear with it. Set it like I would my Iwata and fan looked nice. No joke, it spit so much paint on my first pass that after 24” I dropped the airline and switched cause it looked like a waterfall. Turns out, you gotta wind the fluid adjuster all the way in so the needle doesn’t move, and back it out 2 threads. Feels weird because you get the air with the trigger and the second you hit the sweet spot where it’ll pull the needle back and release paint, it only moves maybe 3/16”-1/4”. So technique and setup are suuuuuuper important, but a good painter can make a bad gun look good.

@@jameshenry4332 thank you sharing that it was an interesting insight, and wow I wrote that two years ago ??? Time flies, Even though I’m no professional painter , I’ve painted 5 or 6 cars over the last 30 years , I did run a small business 5 years ago fixing body kits so only did spot/smart repair type of painting. I got the bug to buy spray guns due to watching these videos and I to became a huge fan of Iwata but for no other reason than I like em, not from experience, a little stupid on my part buying guns when I don’t need them although in saying that friends have asked me to spray their cars so I have two back to bare metal resprays starting next week, but all in all I still haven’t bought my beloved WS400 but one day I will , I’m thinking of restarting my body kit repair business , so maybe it will happen but thanks for your comment it was interesting indeed

Great video. I think you can’t go wrong with any of those 3. I know a lot of people hate on iwata for overattomizig and the uneven fan but if you get those guns tuned in just right they spray amazing and definitely have a huge spot in the painting world. I love my ws400 and ls400. All I do is turn the fan in by 2 - 2.5 turns.

Thank you both! I recently demoed a Sagola hvlp with a 1.3 tip that I was hoping to get a comparison in video but the demo was way too quick. All around I think the gun didn't suit waterborne very well but would have been fantastic four solvent. I would like to try Sagola's waterborne tip set up our the clear set up. Maybe they'll be an addition to these videos down the road anyway.

txcoboy I think at the time of the videos I was spraying RM, if not it was glasurit but I'm pretty sure it was all RM. Definitely BASF anyway. Glasurit recommends reducing their base coat between 60 and 80%, I think we generally do 65. I tried 80% initially and I hated it, everything was too transparent but lay down nice. 65 seems to be the magic number for me at least.

stacy armour I'm in total agreement. I've since come to almost despise my Devilbiss just because of the overspray, it's the hardest gun to clean by far and wastes a huge amount of material. I still love my Satas but nothing spreads like those Iwatas.

I would agree with zoran exactly. It does depend on what he's spraying, but that gun will be great for anything. If he's spraying solvent it may put our a little too much material but would make a great clear coat gun. It's my favorite gun of all time. You can't go wrong with any gun from sata or iwata though. The tekna is less expensive but a great gun too.
@generalstoaschicken
@generalstoaschicken 10 лет назад
@ theGmic357z or whatever your name is, you should never spray all guns at the same pressure. There are recommended pressures for each paint gun manufacturer as well as for each paint system (BASF, Axalta, etc) so spraying with any particular gun usually takes a little research (at least it SHOULD, to do it well). Not much, but you can't, or shouldn't, spray Onyx at the same pressure with your Sata as you do your Iwata. Basic painting 101 my friend. Even my helpers know that much in their first month. So you're welcome for the education friend! Also don't get mad at me for you wasting your time on my video. If it didn't help you, give it the old "thumbs down" (as if you didn't already) and move on buddy. What it sounds like your time would be best spent on would be some good old fashioned training. Again, you're welcome! Take care friend, and stay angry.

Just found out me new Mini Jet 4400 the air regulator on the back of the gun is plastic and if you plug it into a hose that has a 100 lbs or more the plastic piece of ^&)^) breaks . I have two of the guns and both are broken. So i looked at my Adam II docks and the same plastic crap. Should have bought A Harbor freight $50.00 gun . I am done with Sata.Also do NOT leave thinner in the cup it causes the seals to shrink up and fall out . Found all this out from DAN AM Corp the Sata distributor for the USA.

Yeah, it's a well known Problem in Germany as well. My first own Spray Gun was a MiniJet 4400 RP and I had the same problem, an it was brand New. My Paint Disturber / Dealer repairs these Items a lot. A very good Thing about the 4400 Mini is the Body and the hole for the Cup are bigger and the RPS or PPS Cups will fit from the 3000/400/5000 to the "little Sister". Today I have no more Problems with my Mini in daily use. I use Sata for Base Coat and Clear, but the Best für Top Coats and Clear is IWATA Greetings from Germany,

Iwata require precision, you mean require the person knowing how to paint. Iwata made all kind of paint guns including airbrush I use to not like Iwata but once u paint with one u never use anything else. Sata is great but they cutting off their own line the 3000 rp to sell you their new gun in couple of years no one will have part for that new sata 5000 rp. You cannot compare different spray gun like this. First you must use these guns for a some time and then say which is better (FOR YOU!) Some other painter like more some different gun. Devilbiss, Sata, Iwata are all good guns, everyone has own favourite.. ☺ Think, if the spray pattern indicates quality, then every gun would have a big pattern! Why is it adjustable? Because you need different pattern with different work! THERE IS NO BEST GUN..!
