During World War 2, Private First Class John DeGennaro served as a United States Marine during the Battle of Iwo Jima in the 5th Division, 13th Marines Battalion. DeGennaro joined the Marines early at 17-years-old, and was trained in the art of sound ranging.
His job was to use microphones to find enemy artillery batteries, then direct fire at those batteries to knock them out. At the end of the Iwo Jima campaign, he and his unit had knocked out 50 Japanese artillery batteries and received a Presidential Citation. Before leaving the island, he witness the first American flag raised on Mount Suribachi through a telescope.
