From Beginner to Expert: Unlocking the Meaning and Techniques of the Dùndún Drum
Dundun is a very and most important drum in #Yorùbá land because of the #role it's been playing in history.
Dùndún means sweet-sound. DÙN - Means sweet and DÚN Means sound. This should #naturally inform us that the drum is a unique and different one.
We call it ìyá, literally, "the #mother." It is played in almost any situation that requires music, #mimicking #spoken Yoruba speech tones. The varying sounds are obtained by placing the drum on the shoulder and #squeezing the tension #strings with our #fingers while striking the membrane with a curved stick, Kọ̀ǹgọ́. The bells on the edge is called Ṣaworo and it also add sound to it's rhythm and makes it unique.
This Wood hourglass shaped double headed drum with hide tension strings, running from head to head, completely surrounding the entire body of the drum will be the centre of this tutorial and we delve into art of playing the Ìyá Ìlù Dùndún.
