It's another Japanese fashion history video! In today's timeline we're discussing popular pastel kawaii styles like decora and fairy kei, and how they inspired newer harajuku phenomenons like yumekawaii and larme. I think understanding how some of our favorite styles came to be can really make us appreciate them even more.

It should be noted that I am not super happy with my description of the whole yamikawaii/menhera situation in this video and I’ll be doing more to better describe that portion of harajuku style in a letter video after I’ve done more research with more reliable sources.

i don't remember where i read about menhera, but i remember it's a contraction of "mental health"... i also read about yomi kawaii before yume kawaii, but i believe yume kawaii is the true style. it's a bit hard to find info about this, so great job on your research!

I know menhera is specifically inspired by mental health issues, but speaking as someone who spends a lot of time in various doctors' offices for a variety of issues, I feel kind of drawn to pill, syringe, and bandage motifs in kawaii fashion. It feels like an embrace and reclamation of some not-fun aspects of life.

I miss old decora... I loved the cheerful colours and bright energy... and I can't see pastel anymore at this point 🤔 it's been a pastel overload for close to 2 decades now. Hoping for something else this new decade...

razor blade and syringe motifs are menhera, not yumekawaii. they can coexist for sure but it's an important distinction to make. also menhera existed before Menhera Chan

It’s still quite new (as in, 2019 new) and hasn’t really made it to the west yet so I don’t think there are any full websites describing the style :/ It’s still more of an idea than a fully fledged style.

I have so much trouble finding my style because I like so many completly different ones so I just have full coords in different styles I like. I started dressing in mori when I was 13 and its still my favourite concept and people now are trying to bring soft cottage core and the punk cryptidcore together and Mori is the perfect crossroad

Thank you so much for your work! I saw a couple of travel shows in my country about Japan, and usually regarding fashion they were super shallow, ignorant and with a hint of superiority attitude. I'm glad that you cover this phenomena in depth and respectful 💖

Another great video! Decora is my absolute favourite Harajuku fashion style and the first one I ever wore, so it was great to learn more about its history and I would love to see a more in-depth video of that style specifically. I even have a decora outfit that I'm going to be wearing today. Also I'd love to see you try a decora make-over using what you have. It'll be fun to see you in one of my favourite styles 💖 Thanks for introducing me to neo fairy btw. I feel like some of my style really aligns with it!
@CoraMaria
@CoraMaria 4 года назад
Also if you do a video on decora history please quote that stupid Facebook status I made weeks ago: Harajuku: "A few years ago, I lost my darling decora." Decora: "Stop telling everyone I'm dead!" Harajuku: "Sometimes I can still hear their voice." I feel like that kinda sums up Harajuku's relationship with decora at the moment. (And psst! Please post your sources in the description so I can read more about Harajuku history.)

So is Yamikawaii/Menhera the j-fashion version of the Pastel Goth scene in the West? Pastel Goth is a term I hear far far far more than either Yamikawaii or Menhera; are they different?
@TheStitchess
@TheStitchess 4 года назад
Pastel goth seems to have an overall looser theme - yamikawaii and menhera are more specific. It seems they take a lot of the same inspirations tho Other than that, pastel goth is in the west, yamikawaii is in the east, but pretty much two different takes on the same thing.

thank you so much for making this video!! i’ve wanted to get into fairy kei fashion for a while now, and this was a really cool and informative video to see. its a bit hard to get into fashion like this in the states due to being seen as a “weirdo” for dressing any way that’s not incredibly basic, or maybe that’s just my experience, but i’ve fallen in love with it and really want to incorporate it into my everyday style

OMG this is so helpful! I'm working on a video on Bubblegum kei/ bubblegumcore and this is perfect history lesson I needed. I had no idea forest fairy and neon fairy exist yet I done them a couple of times. in fact I happening to be turning a vintage lavender bustier into forest fairy top with iridescent ruffle lace . Bubblegumkei has the preppyness of larme, colors of Neon fairy (especially hot pink and red) iridescent and sheerness of forest fairy and a bit of 90s/y2k flare! one thing I commonly do is I like to mix 50s vintage with iridescent fabric which is something that didn't exist in the 50s. It little electra heart but with a jfashion twist. I'll credit this video as a good source about the history of pastel harajuku fashion!
