J. Haydn - Hob I:73 - Symphony No. 73 in D major "La chasse" (Hogwood) 

Just as entertaining as it is well crafted. Definitely a top ten of my favorite Haydn symphonies

Haydn can produce so much magic with so little sometimes. It's incredible.

Sometimes I think this is my fav. Symph. too!!

This is certainly one of my favorite Haydn symphonies. The opening extended slow intro foreshadows such 1st movement symphonic intros by Beethoven and the early Romantics.

1780 -1782 circa E' la quarta e ultima sinfonia ispirata alla caccia. A differenza delle sinfonie n.31 e n.72 e a somiglianza della sinfonia n. 65, i motivi venatori sono relegati nel finale, composto originariamente come ouverture per l'opera "La fedeltà premiata". Questo melodramma, andato in scena ad Esterhazy il 25 febbraio 1781, fu molto apprezzato dal principe che rimase colpito dal brano illustrante l'ingresso di Diana. Per assicurare alla "Caccia" una vita più lunga di quella che si prospettava alle composizioni teatrali di Haydn, destinate a restare sepolte negli archivi del castello, l'autore decise di incorporarla in una sinfonia. Per il secondo tempo utilizzò una melodia del proprio Lied "Amore reciproco". Secondo il Pohl, a cui si deve la più antica e monumentale biografia haydniana, la sinfonia fu eseguita la prima volta per celebrare il ritorno del principe Esterhazy dopo una prolungata assenza. Malgrado le premesse, che potrebbero fare pensare ad un'opera di circostanza, essa è equilibrata e omogenea in tutte le sue parti e costituisce uno dei migliori esempi del nuovo stile prima del ciclo delle Parigine. Thank you for this, it's lovely. Years ago, while living in N MI, I wrote a list of 'musical loves' heard over Interlaken Public Radio. Forgotten, I just found it again last week (I never throw ANYTHING away!:) This fine presentation proves why I included this great music on my list. Thanks again for much enjoyment!

The commercials, though between the movements, are still considered a nuisence and distracting. They damage the spirit of such lovely tunes. Accordingly, I had no choice but to select the "dislike" option. This is despite the fact that I thank the lady/gentleman who provided us with this gorgeous piece of music. Sometimes I think this is my favourite symphony... Do yourself a favour and listen to Thomas Fey/Heidelberger Sinfoniker for comparison
