Haydn wrote the three Symphonies 76, 77, and 78 as a trilogy in 1782 - rather like Mozart’s last three in 1788. They are in fact three additional ‘London’ symphonies, and were intended for a trip to that city that never came off. Haydn in 1783 wrote to his Parisian publisher Boyer: ‘Last year I composed three beautiful, magnificent, and by no means over-long symphonies...they are all very easy, without too much concertante for the English gentlemen, and I intended to bring them over myself and produce them there’. All three truly are magnificent; try listening to them as a threesome.
This symphony #76 is especially well-crafted, sensuous in tone and quite dramatic in places. It's quite a bit more profound than the attractive, but rather slight Symphony #74 (also in E-flat major) written in 1781.

I thought I'd heard just about all of the 104 Haydn symphonies, but I don't recall having made the acquaintance of this one until now, and I'm glad I did.
