@@mijoree This box has now been updated to include all 104 numbered symphonies plus ‘A’ and ‘B’. It remains an essential reference point, and starter edition, from which you can add different types of performances - harpsichord continuo, modern instruments, larger/smaller scale, et cetera - at your leisure.
Thank you for posting this symphony conducted by C. Hogwood. I couldn't find the BBC Music Magazine when it offered this CD. Eternal regret.

Thanks for posting this amazing piece, it is helping me a lot to study music history at University. And the most important: it is amazing, it makes me feel as if it is paradise.
You’re quite right that this is a very special symphony by Joseph (sic) Haydn, and amongst the total of 107 (sic), it is indeed exceptionally beautiful and graceful. I think too, that it is one of Haydn’s most smoothly, suavely, elegant symphonies - about as close to ‘Mozartian’ as Haydn ever got;* the other thing I might add to the qualities you listed is the significant amount of contrapuntal work in the outer movements. In short, you’re right - it’s a great symphony. * Symphony 77 was written in 1782, when Haydn had not yet met Mozart, and barely knew a note of his music at that time.

The 1st and 4th movements have a considerable amount of contrapuntal mastery woven into the sonata-type music; the 2nd movement is very sensuous in a particularly Haydnesque manner, whilst the 3rd is a sharp contrast. Your quite right about that ‘The first movement is so good’, so is the rest, it’s a very fine symphony.
There is a sruprisingly similar Andante second movement in Schubert's Second Symphony. Did Schubert know and imitate this second movement of Joseph Haydn's Symphony 77?

This one was written for performance in London. Robins-Landon describes 77 as a 'towering masterpiece". Maybe an exaggeration but it comes just after some of Haydn`s less inspiring 74-5.
Haydn 77 is a very fine symphony in every respect, but just to put it into context, written in 1782, it is contemporaneous with Mozart 35 - the first of Mozart’s last six, and by some distance greatest symphonies which were all written after his move to Vienna the year before. Compared to almost everything by everyone else - and Mozart’s symphonies prior to the ‘Haffner’ - Haydn 77 is a greater work than any other contemporary symphony.
