I watched JJ AND Jet Black jump in to the crowd at Glasgow Apollo in 1978 to attack the infamous bouncers there. The bouncers were being they're normal self and knocking hell out of all the young punks. It was a great night to be a Stranglers fan.

JJ used to train with us in somersham ... a very humble man , but everyone has a limit !

Back in 1978 at a Stranglers gig in Aberdeen, I was up in the balcony watching the support act, when a lanky figure leaped over from the wings and stood beside me. It was JJ checking the sound. For a want of something better to say, and being a biker, I asked him how his Triumph Bonneville was running. "Fuck off!" was the considered reply. When they were on, the audience showered them with spit, and Hugh carried on singing with a long stringy gob hanging from his nose, swaying as he played. I could see JJ was getting angrier and angrier, and took off his leather jacket to save it from the hail of sputum. In the end, he cracked, and just did a beautiful dive head first into the audience, landing on top of one of the culprits. JJ sat on the guys chest, and just started puching the guy's head - left, right, left, right, left, right, etc. In the end, bouncers picked JJ up and launched him back on stage, and then took the guy outside for another hammering. Ahh - those were the days!

Respect to JJ for holding out with dignity and maturity. If I was in his shoes I'm sure it would have ended with some punter losing teeth. It angers me seeing one of my idols being abused doing his stuff.

It wasn't Hugh Cornwell who threw the 'pint' was it?

JJ showed that he is a true martial arts master. A genuine artist. He is capable of doing serious damage to people as he is a 6th /7th dan. Lucky for the chap that he is a true gent!

My first wife and i met JJ back stage @ Whiskey A-GO-GO. He ask my wife for a cigarette. Beautiful, Graceful, Kind. We were in awe, Hugh, Jet was surrounded by two curvy girls, Dave Greenfield was the sweetest of all. But JJ had a temper, don't push a Vikings Buttons, it won't be pretty, but UGLY.

its not the first time JJ has dealt with someone in the audience and it wont be the last. His doc martin boots have flew past my ears as he leapt over my head into the audience at a gig in Caen, France when someone insulted him. He dealt with it swiftly, got back on stage and finished the set. I admire him, why should he tolerate such insults, he's a total legend and for me the best bass player ever, nice one JJ xxx

How times have changed. In 1979, at Leeds Uni, a similar thing happened, only this time JJ went completely beserk, jumped in the crowd with his bass and kicked shit out of the guy. lol

I was at a stranglers gig at Surrey Uni back in `79. same thing happened. The beer flew past Hugh Cornwalls head. He turned round, stopped the band and looked out into the crowd. "Who the F threw that"? Some `hard men` at the back stated chanting `kill kill kill` etc. Cornwall just stood there for going on a minute staring out into the crowd. The place was full of Hells Angels, the `enforcers of order and discipline` (!) did nothing. Eventually the band picked up where they had left off. Point made.

At a gig at Glasgow Uni some years ago, someone in the balcony threw what looked like a black plastic bag full of liquid (?), and it caught Paul Roberts full on the upper body, nearly knocking him over. The stuff went everywhere, and also covered Baz - the two of them looked totally stunned. JJ offered to take the culprit (and anyone else!) on - "Come on, we're only a bunch of soft southerners!", but there were no takers. Thankfully, they carried on with the gig - I just can't understand why those cowardly scum do stuff like that at a gig they paid good money for...

Lol! I saw the Stranglers in Detroit (early 80's) once, when JJ jumped into the crowd and clocked a guy for taking pictures.

First saw the band on the Raven Tour back in '79 at Carlisle Market Hall. I think it was Hugh Cornwell & Jet Black (Long time ago - many gigs later) that had a fight on stage and that was the end of the gig. At least they carry on the gig nowadays!

To even things up why doesn't someone find out where the offender works or which job centre he signs on at pull the same stunt see if he takes it in his stride as well when he's in the middle of working or having an interview. Why would someone waste all that money doing that . I often fantasise about doing the same at a blur gig or blink 182 cause I hate their music but would not make ticket master rich just to go and chuck a cup of overpriced tap bear over a band member.

I saw the stranglers on paul Roberts debut tour at Birmingham Edwards in the 90's. I threw beer and gobbed over Roberts through the entire gig. JJ and D Greenfield looked at me a few times while I was gobbing on him, lol.
