A compilation of J.K. Rowling explaining her lifelong dream of becoming a writer. The excitement she felt when she got the idea for Harry Potter. The importance of following your own passion and not giving in to others expectations.
. Yes, and there are 12 publishers who ended up kicking themselves for rejecting Harry Potter! We could have published Harry Potter! The missed opportunity of a life time!
I live by her comment that she doesn't know why others wouldn't want to be writers and that she had always known she wanted to write. I'm an actor and have always wanted to act and I also write scripts and scenes to work on.
I always wished to become a professional writer just because writing is something that is fully yours, nobody can take it from you. The whole world you`re creating gives a sense of security, that`s what saved me so many times at school. Now I don`t write anything at all because I require and expect too much from myself. But this video made my situation a little bit better. Thank you:)
Try writing short stories. Don't worry about the quality. A novel quality idea will come along and tempt you to write a novel, but you should take notes and let it gestate whilst writing short stories and finding your voice (i.e. something that doesn't just sound like a clone of the last classic author you read). I read _The Old Man and The Sea_ and then wrote a short story about a bullfight which was very Ernest Hemingway, and this was pointed out to me by my teacher and I didn't become self-conscious about this, but accepted that I would eventually find my own voice, even if that was a neutral (not identifiable as any famous writer in particular) voice. I personally feel it helps to have some outline of the plot before you write chapters, although some 'seat of their pants' writers ignore this preparatory step and just jump into a story with some interesting characters and let those characters tell the author where the story will end up. Having some plan of where you want to end, and the feeling you want to leave with the reader, and maybe a moral, is pretty difficult to do when being a 'pantser' so I recommend a little outlining and when you are really happy with it, sticking with it. You still get to discover how to get your characters from the start of each chapter to the end whilst satisfying the goals of the plot outline at that point, so you are 'pantsing' to some extent, you just aren't completely lost having to come up with all layers of a story at once with every word you write, as you know what is needed ahead of time, and have done some character biographies and lore (or historical research for the time period in which your novel is set). Doing a short story has none of these burdens and practise at writing short fiction, even if it is garbage at first, will prove to yourself that your twentieth short story is better than your second. Your writing will relax and mature and gain confidence and the reader will pick up on your self assurance and feel that they are in safe hands and be more prepared to suspend their disbelief when involved in your fictional worlds. Good luck!
Check out the book "immediate fiction" by jerry cleaver. This book got me out of the same mindset that you are in. Its the best book on not just writing, but also about becoming a writer and developing creative habits, and instilling hope and easy good habits, and making time for writing at even just five minutes a day. You can do it,
@@____uncompetative thank you very much for these wonderful words! I have recently turned youtube notifications back and saw your comment:))) I sort of did what you'd suggested. I didn't really try short stories - I wrote bits of a long story - just some parts of the story that I clearly saw in my head. It was amazing! I'd been writing like that for about 3 months - there are some really great pieces now. Then I started my first novel seriously, I'd been working on it for more than a year and finished it. I got a lot of practical experience and now I'm in the process of writing my second novel!
I am about to be done with my sixth novel. As an author, I look back to say that the road to success has never been easy. I am thankful however, God has placed this wonderful gift in me.
Writing is difficult. That’s why most people don’t write. Writing is creativity and therapeutic. I wrote a book and started a second. It’s excruciating.
Yeah, nowadays people want to go faster and faster. But writing is a long and slow procedure. You've got to be patient and perseverant. Just a few people among us can do that.
Honestly I love the process. Sure, it can be hard, and the end result might not even be published, but in my eyes not writing is even harder. Writing to me is necessary, I feel empty and creatively frustrated if I don't.
For me she is one of the most admirable celebrity. Just by donating a big portion of her wealth she made from her books on charities, that says a lot about her!
I can see a great story in everything. Walking in a park ,there are hundreds of people around and they all will inspire you. I am a writer from the day I realized my potential.
seriously i also feel that people who see things as they look miss all the thrill and excitement in there lives...the thrill off feeling and experiencing a situation without actually being into it is something that makes life sooo hopeful and exciting Its as Dumbledore said to Harry Potter and The queen told us "Of course its a dream Harry, but why on earth should it mean that its not real "
I can never compare myself to somebody as great as JK Rowling but I can really relate to this video because it's the exact same way I got the idea for my book I completed. A couple years back I had a series of weird dreams always about the same characters in the same fantasy world..... in the very first one all I saw was the girl who is the main character and I could see everything about her so clearly, so intensely....the first dream was just her standing there and it was so intense and so Eerie it just stuck in my mind forever and so I decided to write. Now in 2020 I finished the first draft and I'm a third of the way thru the second draft. Dreams really can take you somewhere if only you let them.
I wish I wanted to become a author like J.K. Rowling, and I also wish I always wanted to meet her because she is my favorite author if I had money to go to England. Also I wanted to tell her about my creations and give me some advice because I'm not very good of literature.
I am currently writing a book I created the idea for in my teens. Out of all the things I have tried in the past, writing a book is the most exciting. I have gotten attached to my characters and love developing them.
If you want to write, first read - a lot. Read - or if you can’t, listen - to all sorts of things; when inspired, read out loud at length (until very recently that’s how it used to be done) until you find your own voice. Then write.
I’ve got a few stories atm that are in the process of being written. Just like Rowling my family or at least my father think I’m crazy for wanting to write. It’s not like I’m going to quit my job and just start writing 🙄 needed a place to vent because some people can’t appreciate creativity.
This was great, but the music kept distracting me. I get it that it's the theme music and all, but for writers like me who just want her words, it was annoying.
I’d write with my eyeliner, too, despite it being my favourite piece of makeup. I lost my imaginative story writing capabilities after childhood… She is fortunate to have had such heaps of viable ideas. ✨
She's right. I wonder why everyone doesn't want to write fiction. And it does feel better than falling in love lol... It's funny to hear it from the mouth of another writer!!!
Oh my Lord, I'm totally the same... Maybe not totally, but I'm similar to her in some ways. I want to be a writer to, I was thinking about it since I was 12 years old and now, I can't understand why I'm the only one in my family that is writing a lot of fantasy novels. I can't see myself in future without any book writed by me, well, I hope I'll be like her in some ways - till the end.
A few bars of the Harry Potter music would have been enough, but to have it during the too soft speaking was too much. Cutting and pasting is good, but, please, sound level moderation. Like writing, videos are all about editing until it is right.
I think many people want to be successful writers, and they will often use authors like J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, etc. as examples. The problem is that such authors are the exception, not the rule. Most authors do not make anywhere near that amount of money, and finishing a book takes a tremendous amount of concentration and perseverance. Those who give up easily should not embark on that path.
@@wonderwoman5528 I don't know, as I am dealing with so many obstacles at the moment. As for whether I have the determination, not at the moment. I have written every day for four months, but I have not finished anything resembling a book.
@@Musicienne-DAB1995 writing every day for four months shows a huge amount of motivation. It’ll take time but you’ll get there and you’re heading in the right direction :)
Maybe some were told by others their writing was good so they believe they have talent, & combined with books they read, they may believe they have what it takes to be a pro.
Well said at the end, cause when you grow up looking at you're family working poor jobs, imagination of ways to break the fate chains which await you can fire up, & the Rd Less Travelled looks good for you!
Yeah, "...words have no meaning, especially sentences.. They don't stand for anything."--Madonna. I've dealt with cheaters several times in my life, and they always get caught when it's only them in the mirror. It's wonderful that now they are given the task of writing. Drink a bunch, smoke and still have the anxiety fight you, bitch. It takes a long time to develop discipline for writing.
@@bearwhiteraven4820 Stand up for the ones you support nice. I like reminding someone when the person they're trash talking is not there to defend. Weak backbiting I won't participate in!
