Lenneke Ruiten, Soprano Javier Simó, Trumpet Anka Smeu, Violin, Grigori Nedobora, Violin Real Filharmonia de Galicia, Helmuth Rilling Auditoruo de Galicia, Santiago de Compostela, Spain. 24.02.20211
Interpretation and soloist are the best I've heard for the piece. Tempo is perfect, also. Too bad Lenneke Ruiten wasn't selected to sing in recent cantata cycles, because the would have easily outcompeted all inexpressive half-voices that proliferate today... In terms of expressivity and voice quality she is on same par as Equiluz (simply outstanding). Orchestral playing is also on highest level, they look like they are using modern instruments but the style is not at all romanticized.
You should check out Kathleen Battle then. This version is great and I don't want to take away from it, but she and Wynton really lead the ensemble into something great.
The precision, the musicality, the quality of the each instrument sound so clear and so gorgeous. There is time for everything in this interpretation. The culture of Johann Sebastian Bach embodied. Helmut Rilling at his best. Thank you, Maestro.
What a performance to sustain such a tempo without failing or hesitation nor any "diva" effects. Congratulations, Mrs Ruiten, for this fine performance... and your superb (powerful and mastered) voice!
Still my favorite Cantata ever. And I even quite quite the trumpet! I mean its sound, but here is totally perfect: it and a soprano voice (the only right match, especially here) for a joyful and very rich musical texture with a wonderful dialogue between them and with the ensemble. And a quite amazing rendition. I generally prefer minor tones, but in this case I can't avoid kneel again to Mr. Bach and his astonishing genius.
I have listened to all recordings of this Bach Cantata # 51 and the best to my sensitive ears and musical background tells me that this recording for the ecoustical, soprano voice, trumpet, chamber accompaniment, tempi etc. is the best I have ever heard here recorded or live in concert.
The trumpet player is awsome, and what one guy percieved as a mistake was merely a trill near the high register of the instrument(piccolo trumpet) All the player and singer are wonderful, tight, and passionate. Still, my favorite is still Maurice Andre on the turnabout label from the mid-70s.
Extraordinarily sensitive performance by everyone. It is lovely to see great teaching traditions being passed on to the next age. My congratulations to Helmuth Rilling for his contributions to music and a happier, more sensitive world.
I just happened to stumble on this video, and I am glad I did. I have always loved Rilling's interpretations of Bach. This performance is no exception. The soprano, Miss Lenneke Ruiten has transported me to heavenly realms with her lovely singing. My favorie aria from 51 is the haunting "Hochster!" Thank you Miss Ruiten! I would echo Irwin Wargon's comment on what a blessing it is to HEAR the beautiful continuo realization of the harpsichord in this performance! Goodbye wimpy organ! lol
Bravissimi tutti ! in my opinion a perfect performance, clean, acutare, dynamic ! a great soprano - great coloraturas, perfect balance between full of expresion and othentic. Brava !!
Always a fascinating match: soprano vs trumpet. The trumpet has to be soft and sweet, whilst the soprano has to be strong, so the sounds mimic each other. A good test for both performers! By the way, Loreena McKennitt performs a similar duet vs a harp; I am still searching for that performance on RU-vid..
Absolutely divine, what a wonderful work and so well put together, Lenneke you are a star! Javier you rock, Anka and Grigori, absolutely perfect. The Hallelujah is out of this world, absolutely divine.
No one like Bach!! I Love this cantata, and Lenneke Ruiten´s voice is so beautiful, so heavenly and powerful, also She´s pretty nice. I´d get married...
'I survived a Bach cantata' should be on Facebook. Mercifully short, intelligible, with multi-national players to bolster theme of piece. Rilling is superb and the continuo player stands out.
There are far better performances of this magnificent aria. Try Frederica von Stader. The Spanish are so not baroque. The music is not crisp enough and the trumpeter fluffs his notes and at times the orchestra is out of tune. it made me wince!
Superlative performance! Pity about the recording engineering, tho -- mic'd a bit too far, and picking up a bit too much of what seems to be a very live hall. O well -- you can't have everything. (Where would you keep it?)
I am studying Psalm 138 and my Bible reminds me to listen to this Cantata. I am so glad I did. Magnificent and uplifting! Thanks be to all and glory be to God who inspired Bach to have created such perfect art of praise.
I heard Lenneke Ruiten today at the Muscat Opera House where the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Ton Koopman, performed Telemann's Donnersode. Her voice is a revelation of beauty, it has the softness of honey, perfection. Koopman himself is already top of the bill. With on top of this Lenneke and actually also the other singers and the orchestra, we had the privilege of attending an unforgettable performance.
As I said the trumpeter interpreted his part differently, but he made no mistakes, that I heard. The true test of the trumpet is the very last movement with all of those clarino pitches, and he played them perfectly. He even got them to pianissimo (for a trumpet), which is really difficult. The trumpeter is amazingly talented and deserves every honor we can heap upon him for this amazing performance. The trumpet might as well have been singing Soprano, he was so clear and articulate note-wise.
+sandraoopie It is a beautiful world made even more beautiful by Sebastian Bach. I would not prefer to live in his time - so much better now than then!
+michael smith in many ways of course this world is so very much better, but I am so happy I don't have children because this world the way it is now is full of so many terrors and horrors and just plain difficulties (I went to Berkeley, but now would barely qualify for a city college with my GPA from high school, the competition for good colleges is so fierce; and forget about trying to get a job in a decent field; the 7+ billion population and growing is making it impossible for the vast majority to live any kind of decent life). And that's even before we get to Isis.
I regret every time other than boy trebles are used; it's always an inferior result, lacking their purity of tone, though I realize most of today's boys can't perform the complexity of Bach's great music adequately.
I'm afraid your ears may be imagining things because I didn't hear anything odd. The trumpeter interpreted his part a little differently. If you look carefully, his trumpet was giving him trouble. I agree, the Battle/Marsalis recording is a good one, also; however, this Soprano sounds different from all the others I've ever heard sing this. She sounds like she's enjoying her singing. No one can duplicate the sheer joy of this work unless they really mean it. And this Soprano means it.
BWV 51 is a choral work scored for solo soprano and trumpet. These are just the solos from it... I suppose someone figured they'd put it in here without the chorales and choral section.
This is the complete work and this is the original scoring. The solo soprano sings the "choruses". It is one of several cantatas which Bach wrote for a soloist. The most famous is perhaps No.82 "Ich habe genug." for Baritone and orchestra.
This outdoes many of the past classic recordings of 51. It slightly reminds me, strangely enough of an authentic version, Marianne Kweksilber with Leonhardt. Both singers have an appealing, almost fragile brilliance, if that's not a contradiction.
What a blessing having a harpsichord in the continuo part rather than a wimpy organ that drains the life from most other performances. Anyone know the name of the excellent harpsichordist? Overall outstanding performance under Helmuth Rilling!

Semplicemente meraviglioso Gridate di gioia a Dio in ogni terra (traduzione testo in italiano) 1. ARIA (Soprano) Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen! 2.
