This is a wonderful performance. Some other performers play the opening allegro movement so fast that it sounds as if they are almost trying to get it over with. This gorgeous music is meant to be savored, not rushed through. Of all the magnificent, incomparable music that Bach ever wrote, this concerto is the greatest of all.
Totally agree with you . It is horrible listen this "concerto" so fast as the puritans does. SOME PEOPLE STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND THA BACH IS MUCH MODERN THAN IS HIS EPOCH, and even more . there will be more TRANSMAGNIFICATION OF BACH'MUSIC IN THE XXI CENTURY, as it already had in xx century.
In the original score by J.S.Bach the first mov. has no indication of tempo. You can see it on " Bach Digital", the digital archive of Leipzig Library. Everytime I have to study something new by Bach first I check on this site.
I do like Jean Rondeau version. It is faster but great. I would love to know how Bach was in person. His music is so moving to me. This one of my favorite tracks.
Same. Karl's way of playing may sound too slow for me actually, but he sounds devoted and skillful which is the thing I like about how he plays. At least it's not on a piano though, it's too rounded and it sounds wrong.
Why Richter had a só big head? Because his great spirit, plent of knowledge and Love, and because his cranium was like a big radio station, broadcasting BB to the world(BB means Bach and Beautiful)!

As a Gould fan I wanted to see how Richter would compare. Now I am convinced Gould got some inspiration from Richter's playing. No limp, overpedaled Bach, but strong, muscular Bach. The same impulsive forward moving Bach which I love.
The harpsichord was/is a mechanical lute. Quills pluck the strings. If an orchestral score contains a piano part, it is placed with the percussion instruments since hammers striking the strings produce its sounds. The pedals on a piano, permitting duration of the struck sound were a 19th century innovation facilitating the development of melody in itself, a focus in particular of the Romantic Era composers on keyboard.
Love Richter. I suppose he was THE authority in the world of the great Bach! He just left this world waaay too early. Many of Bach's interpreters of today are appalling .
What do you think about Christopher Hogwood? because I found Hogwood's interpretations more "beautifully precised" in the case of Bach. Of course this is a very nice work from Richter. His works with Handel are pure perfection.
Karl Richter is the absolute reference point for Bach (and Haendel), he played and directed ALL Bach, vocal, orchestral, for organ, harpsichord.. He was a Kantor, like Bach, he had for teachers the legendary G. Ramin and K.Straube in Leipzig. He is on another planet compared with many of today so called Bach specialists. Hogwood is one of the most mediocre interpreters, in my opinion, as all the English, who CANNOT understand Bach nor classical music.

great, but you take a keyboard instrument from the Baroque and put it with full modern strings with full vibrato and long legatos. The strings should adopt to the keyboard.
Notice that Richter was one of the pioneers in Historically Informed Performance of baroque music. This recording is probably from the 50's. It is such a great deal that it was played in a harpsichord as opposed to the mainstream piano.

The opening Allegro is great. It's beautiful. With that said, Richter completely loses the tempo and slows waaaay down starting at the big "run" starting at 6:43. Tempo resumes after the run finishes and Im wondering what's that about? Its still a great performance, but maybe he can't play fast. Not that it really matters, I still enjoyed it, but maybe thats why they choose that tempo?
Richter's playing was slower in general - many of his organ recordings are way more relaxed than those of his contemporaries. He certainly could play fast, and the orchestra certainly wouldn't let itself be conducted by some musically inept nobody. German organists always seemed to be the most professional, so I would say it's a conscious interpretation choice.
such an outdated approach to baroque music, stiff, too slow, no elegance. Fortunately, there are far better performances nowadays... this belongs in the museum archive. Not worth watching
@@Longago2012the actual nonsense is to play Bach's music like Brahms or Schumann. The historical approach gave new and deep knowledge about the ancient music. In my opinion, Richter offers a disputable reading of Bach.
