J.S. Bach - Schubler Chorale 'Kommst du nun, Jesu, vom Himmel herunter', BWV 650
In 1747, J.S. Bach published a collection of six chorale preludes for the organ. Known as the "Schubler Chorales", each of the movements were transcriptions of Bach's earlier works, drawn from his Cantatas. The final chorale prelude, drawn from Cantata BWV 137 and written in 1725, translates to "Come thou, Jesu, from heaven to earth". The original orchestration features a solo violin playing the arched figurations that resemble joyful rainbows of light, as the tenor voice pronounces the chorale tune. In the organ version, Bach places the violin figuration in the right hand, with the left hand providing the basso continuo line, whilst the pedal plays the chorale tune at 4' pitch, placing it between the register of the left and right hand. It is one of the most joyful and lively of the chorale preludes left by J.S. Bach, and presents a happy challenge to the organist in the different articulations and figurations necessary to orchestrate each voice separately, as well as to execute the trills placed challengingly in the pedal!
