Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Prelude and Fugue in D major, BWV 532
Peter Hurford at the Rieger Organ of the Ratzeburg Cathedral (Ratzeburger Dom, Schleswig Holstein)
Like most of Bach's organ compositions, this piece was written during his tenure in Weimar between 1709 and 1717. Many of his greatest and most well known organ works were written during this period, including, for example, the Prelude and Fugue in E major, BWV 566. The composer was residing in Weimar after being hired by the ruling duke of Weimar, Wilhelm Ernst, in 1709 as an organist and member of the court orchestra; he was particularly encouraged to make use of his unique talents with the organ by the duke. Indeed, his fame on the instrument grew and he was visited by many students of the organ to hear him play and to try to learn from his technique. The Prelude and Fugue in D major was probably composed in 1710, although this is not certain. However, it was definitely written before Bach codified the clear two-section prelude and fugue in the form of what is used in The Well-Tempered Clavier, which was composed in 1722. This is because BWV 532 features a lengthy, complex, self-contained fugue preceded by a multisectional prelude

Hurford was probably the greatest Baroque organist in the world during his later years. Sadly, he died recently.

The tenor voice at this part is so untypical for Bach but yet so damn effective 3:35

The ending is like the sun rising on a new day, erasing all previous days before it, regardless of what events and emotions went before- if we think it so.

Hurford converted me to Bach - after putting-up with various garbled, mangled, wearisome opaque performances his was a revelation. Check out BWV 564, 543 and 572 in particular for masterly tempos, transparency and electrifying registrations

This piece actually plays after Michael says "I do renounce him" until the end of the baptism. The beginning of Passacaglia in C Minor is also in there (Lampone and Neri load their guns). I can't identify the other two pieces though (beginning of baptism, Barzini first appears in the hallway). The only piece of Baptism music that Rota wrote that appears in the film is when Clemenza shoots Straucci in the elevator.

Overall good performance, but some of the organ sounds a bit fuzzy. Not sure if it is possible to adjust the registration to fix this. Seems that certain organs (most often the larger and more modern ones) have this problem and others don't.

Remember that this is a Rieger Organ, probably built under the influene of the Romantic period. But say what you will, this performance is most electrifying.

Does anyone else think the prelude sounds more like Krebs (or, because of the chromaticism, one of Bach's sones) than Bach? Much like the "Eight Short Preludes and Fugues," it just isn't musically sophisticated enough to be JS Bach! Although the fugue is traceable in Bach's works, the prelude isn't. This could be an editor's marriage of disparate sources.
