It's one of the great tragedies of this pandemic that great singers like Andreas Wolf or Tim Mead are not able to show their tremendous talent to the world as they otherwise would have been. But I hope in the not so far future this music and this voice will help the world to heal. Until then these videos by the Bach Vereniging will do. Great job, Andreas!
Setting all hyperbole aside for just a second or two, I have to say that for me, this little tune by J.S. Bach is perhaps the crowning achievement of all art on this humble planet of ours. How’s that for praise?
Absolutely agree. I’ve felt for a long time the Matthau-Passion is the apex of Western Civilization, and yes, this is my heartthrob of the whole monumental project. Having gushed that much, I always have to concede that Michelangelo’s “Moses” for the tomb of Pope Julius, Archimedes’ “Sand Reckoner,” Pericles’ Funeral Oration, Shakespeare’s sonnets, Beethoven’s Eroica, Velasquez “Surrender at Breda” and Newton’s “Principia” are all jaw-dropping competitors.
This guy, Andreas Wolf, is amazing. He has amazing depth in his voice, with the right touch of lightness, so the music keeps sounding energetic. This is definitely my favourite rendition of this piece.
I've been listening to the Herregwe adaptation of this piece and the solo that goes with it for years and I never thought anybody would surpass it. I stumbled across this video, and I must say that I'm blown away at the expressiveness and ease with which this solo is performed. My new favorite. Bravo!
Es gibt Momente, da verfliegt der ganze Alltagsmüll, bestehend aus Krach, Worten und Sinnlosigkeiten schon nach wenigen Sekunden, wenn man das hört. Es ist ja nicht nur die Genialität des Komponisten. Es sind auch diejenigen, die ihn in seiner ganzen Pracht aufleben lassen. Ich wette, der alte Bach hätte mit einem freundlichen Gesicht leise genickt. Wahrscheinlich aber wäre er aufgestanden und hätte Bravo gerufen. Danke, Andreas!

Natürlich würde man auch die Richter-Berry-Aufnahme anhören. ich bin selbst aber auch begeistert von Wolf. Die Mühelosigkeit und Ebenmäßigkeit, wie auch die gleichmäßige Abdeckung aller Lagen erlaben sehr!
Andreas Wolf has impressed me more than any bass in recent memory! I've never disliked any of his recordings and in fact more impressed with each recording that I am able to hear! I wish him well and continued success. Mache dich mein Herze rein is one of those arias which is quite popular but not one of those which I consider easy to sing and interpret. Mr. Wolf does this seemingly effortlessly and with highly appropriate presentation. I sincerely look forward to hearing anything this man wishes to wing!
Eine Spitzenwiedergabe dieser Arie, auf der Niveau-Ebene eines Fischer Dieskau ( 1959) oder eines Matthias Goerne. Wie gut, dass es diesen Kanal gibt. früher wäre längst eine Aufnahme auf dem Markt gewesen. Heute, für den Konsumenten gut,kann man es bei youtube streamen, für den Künstler wahrscheinlich deutlich schlechter. Von Andreas Wolf möchte ich noch viel mehr hören und sehen, eine der schönsten Stimmen, gepaart mit einwandfreier Technik

Ok, Herr Berger. Danke für Ihre Einschätzung. Ich kann Ihnen sagen, dass ich mich damals nicht gehetzt gefühlt habe. Einerseits kommentieren hier einige in Ihrer Weise das Tempo, aber da bin ich als Sänger nicht nur dem Dirigenten und seiner Vorstellung unterworfen und passe mich als Profi an auch muss man bedenken, dass die Tempi bei einigen Dirigenten von Aufführung zu Aufführung variieren. (Nervosität, oder einfach menschlich) Ich gebe Ihnen grundsätzlich Recht darin, dass wir uns für bestimmte Dinge wieder etwas Zeit nehmen dürfen und dazu gehören auch die Tempi in diesen barocken Meisterwerken. Betrachten wir einmal die Entwicklung. Zuerst waren da die berühmten langsamen Tempi von Karl Richter oder Helmut Rilling, ganz zu schweigen von den 440Hz-Stimmungen. Dann kam Nikolaus Harnoncourt, René Jacobs oder Philippe Herreweghe und legten eine andere Stilfassung dieser Musik zugrunde. Ich bin also eine Sängergeneration, die es nicht anders kennt als, um mit ihren Worten zu sprechen, gehetzt zu sein bzw. Tempi zur Einstudierung nutzt, die dieser neuen, jetzt mitunter wieder alten Lesart entspricht. Das bedeutet, ob es ein Why do the nations im Affenzahn ist, oder halt hier dieses Mache Dich mein Herze rein. Gehetzt ist das nicht sondern halt auf einem Atem gezogen. Da kommt dann auch wieder etwas Ruhe rein dadurch. Es ist schön, sich hier einmal über diese Dinge Gedanken zu machen. Danke für Ihr Feedback. Ich hoffe, Sie kommen dennoch zu allerlei Hörgenuss. Un poil trop rapide, un poil trop léger et frivole, pas assez dans le recueillement, trop "enlevé". Mais résultat respectable. Je ne comprends pas qu'un pupitre de hautbois professionnel (qui ici, peine à suivre le rythme) ne se lève pas en plein concert pour invecter le chef d'orchestre et lui intimer l'ordre de ralentir, à grands coups de pieds dans les miches si besoin. J'exagère? Mais il s'agit ici de Bach et d'une oeuvre d'art; donc tous les moyens sont bons pour rendre grâce et service à la musique du plus prodigieux des compositeurs.
They have botched it. This performance is more rhythmic which is good but the tempo is so fast. This needs to be sung not in haste but in sorrowful contemplation.
