I always felt like Newt's book was assigned to first years to give them the absolute basic understanding required to survive in the Wizarding World. Since not everyone takes Care of Magical Creatures.
Shortly after it was published it was made required reading for all 5th year Charms students at Illvermorny. By the time Harry arrives at Hogwarts, the book has been out for 60 years and several of the creatures found within we see covered in the Defense classes at Hogwarts in the 2nd and 3rd years. Also the book isn't a complete guide to Magical Creatures and how to care for them, but an introduction. Including some of the most commonly found creatures in the world and where to find them.
Knowledge of beasts is useful across a variety of subjects, such as Potions and Transfiguration, and in general life. When his book was first published, Lally assigned it as essential reading for her fifth year Charms students at Ilvermorny.
Loved the comparison of the stealthiness of Hagird vs Harry. Such a great point! How is a half-giant more stealthy than the youngest seeker in a century that has an invisibility cloak? In addition, definitely never going to forget Ike Razorbeam (possibly the 2nd cousin twice removed of Taserface from Guardians of the Galaxy V2).
Dr. Razorbeam's fountain pens were not for writing, but dispensed a stream of cool refreshing liquids. Plain water, giggle water, lemonade, and other drinks were available. They just looked like pens to fool muggles.
It let him 'chew on the tip' in public while still gaining refreshments using clever charms to pull the desired liquid from a canteen. He first came up with it in an attempt to cheat at his NEWTS using Felix Felicis.
@@pablodelrio8082 It was the J vs Ben Quidittch World Cup Quiz. I think it was the last one that Ethan hosted which is why he threw that question in this one.
I mean third grade you're 7-8 years old a third year in Hogwarts is a 7th grader very different and I am much older than the Carlin's though they have human kids and I just have black cats
@@brandibastian4193 3rd year at hogwarts is actually year 9 in real life. Year 7 is age 11-12, which would be first year. Year 8 is age 12-13, which would be sound year. Year 9 is age 13-14, which would be 3rd year. Harry’s the youngest in his year so he turns 14 in the holidays, rather than the school year
10:00 I want to see an alternate-universe Voltron-Sonic-He-man Harry Potter where Dr.Ike Razorbeam is the headmaster and takes the students on all sorts of wacky adventures.
They should take a trivia quiz for a fandom they're NOT in! it would be interesting to see how well they do (the questions should be fairly easy and based on surface-level knowledge so it wouldn't be too discouraging for them)
@katherinemcdaniel8676 more like thirty years but yeah it would make sense that they knew each other since they are experts in the same field and the magical community is not that big
8:01 At first I had no clue, but then I think it's bonked into my head. I believe the Thestral is called Tenebrous. I'm guessing it was also the first in the herd Hagrid tamed. I think I remember it because A Series of Unfortunate Events (Reptile Room) taught me that it means a dark hue.
Tenebrus wasn't first tamed. He was first, that born in Hogwarts, that mean that there was at least 2 tamed thestrals in Hogwarts brought from another place before Tenebrus.
i rememebr the old back and forth format when you started out, yes you still do it but i loved that each video was a message to each other in a sense xD
Plot Twist: Dumbledore had Fantastic Beasts and Wear to Find Them so that Harry can read about three headed dogs and learn about Fluffy so he can save the stone. It seems like a Dumbledore thing.
This particular video was comedy gold, guys! haha Also there were several instances mentioned in this video (Hagrid having a favorite thestral and Harry ever interacting with a bowtruckle) that I had zero memory of. Meaning it's overdue to reread the Harry Potter books again, folks! (Apparently reading them about 6 or so times isn't enough to remember everything).
Have you heard about the theory that Bellatrix wasn't a Death Eater until after she escapes from Azkaban in book 5? Voldemort claims two Lestranges went to jail for him in Goblet, but we know three Lestranges did. So who wasn't the Death Eater? The podcast "Determination, Deliberation, and Dragons" theorized that it was Bellatrix.
i had to go and check on this real quick, because i don't remember voldy saying specifically 2 lestrange, and technically he doesn't he says " the lestrange should stand here but they are entombed in azkaban..." the spot where he stops however is described as big enough for 2 people. so it makes for an interesting theory but even if true i would highly doubt it to be bella she is obsessed with voldy and always has been. i would likely believe one of the brothers first as not being a death eater over her.
Ehhh. Why would she be Voldy's most trusted when she escaped Askaban if she wasn't even a Death Eater before his fall? Plus the way she behaves at the trial "The Dark Lord will rise again...He will rise again and come for us,...We alone were faithful, we alone tried to find him.
These are my favorite videos you do!!! I go back and rewatch them all the time! And there are a good amount of quizzes on Pottermore you haven’t done, so I’m literally so excited
10 years?! Dang time flies!! I don't think i've watched all ten years, but i've been a fan for a long long time and went back to watch almost all of the videos including vlogs. I want to say i joined in year 3? Year 4? I can't remember, but happy 10 years brothers and Super Carlin Friends!
The few seconds in the film as McGonagal and Harry approach Quirrel's class, you can hear this screeching creature through the door... and then they open the door and he's just holding an iguana. Classic. "Of c-c-c-course" The book has them finding "burly" Oliver Wood in Flitwick's class. I like the iguana moment better. Wouldn't have been bad if the Oliver actor had been burly though.
They had to do a bunch of things in the Care of Magical Creatures O.W.L.s- technically they did do something with unicorns: "On their Care of Magical Creatures practical, they had to identify a Knarl hidden among a dozen hedgehogs, demonstrate correct handling of a Bowtruckle, feed and clean out a Fire Crab without sustaining serious burns, and choose from a wide selection of food the diet they would give a sick unicorn." -Harry Potter Wiki
At 8:50 the only reason I know the professor's name, is because I take his class in Hogwarts Mystery. You can learn alot about the Wizarding World by playing, but you need patience. Which I have plenty for being a Fouth Year. 🦅
BEN was really close with the Thestrels name of Tenebrus... Don't forget Ben wrote "X" which is the Roman Numeral for "Ten" and then he wrote "Cerebrus". So in a manner of speaking Ben was conceptually correct in his answer!! Ben's brain was literally..."I don't know the answer but I can give you X and Cerebrus!!"
What if the iguana Quirrel holds in that scene is kind of a hint of his meek cover? I mean, an iguana seem scary for us since people are generally scared of reptiles, but this is the wizarding world, with dragons, basilisks and blast-ended skrewts (book 4 though). So Quirrel holding a "regular" lizard is pretty tame, and it might be voldemort's idea that lizards, apart from snakes, aren't that interesting
Honestly, I'd watch a miniseries of y'all and Pop Hagrid. One of the jokes has to be that a different person voices Hagrid every episode though, and no one acknowledges it lol (Edit) *Ben's Brain* *Deep Memory sends it up* *Desk Man listening to headphones, randomly sending them through random tubes* *Details looking at an Emotions Paper* "......What does this even MEAN?????"
0:22-0:27 Both what Ben says and how he says it reminds me of Hades from the 1997 Hercules when he tells Meg that she works for him even though she doesn't want to help him hurt Hercules, whom she fell in love with
I really love your Harry Potter theory’s and quizzes I feel really good when I get the answer correct when one of you get it wrong Thanks for the video
As a muggle country music lover, love the idea of the Grass Snakes being a wizarding bband. Also, after reading Ss14 one time, I came up with a rock band title: Bourbom Dragons.
The “is it magical or is it British” joke reminds me of in Chuggaaconroy’s Xenoblade Chronicles lp’s when he keeps asking whether it’s a British thing or a Xenoblade thing
Are you guys planning on making videos about the obi-wan series, if not I would really love to see more star wars content and im sure many other fans would too!
Isn't the 3rd year CoMG exam an obstacle course? I'm sure I remember a line like "Lupin's exam was the most unusual, a kind of obstacle course out in the sun." They had to fight various magical creatures then climb into a trunk and battle a boggart. Which sounds horrendous! Imagine being locked in a tiny space with literally your worst fear. Man, Lupin was messed up!
you have to clip that part about dumbledore and the governers and the time travelling third grader, that is the funniest little bit i watched it so many times rollllling
