A look at the very effective record clamp from JA Michell, my experience with it, and a brief tutorial on how it works. More info and links below:
It is available in two versions, one for most turntable spindles and one for the shorter spindles of the popular Rega turntables and others with shorter spindles. This video is a representation of it's effectiveness on warped records specifically, but it is helpful to use with all records in any condition.

I also highly recommend this JA Michell clamp, it's definitely one of the best turntable accessories I have ever purchased. I use it on every album I play to help reduce resonance etc. You only need to use the felt washer when playing a warped record. Buy with confidence.

Thank you for the vid Dan. Just purchased one of these on EBay, but unfortunately it did not come with the felt washer. If you have a moment would you please measure the washer and post the inside and outside dimensions including the thickness so I may try to replicate it? It will be most appreciated.

I recently took possession of a rare disc that I couldn't play because it was dished. This is exactly the fix I was looking for. Thank you for an excellent video! Update: I received mine today and I'm happy to report that it works exactly as demonstrated in this video. Excellent and highly recommended upgrade to anyone who has warped vinyl in their collection.

Hi Dan. I have always been a proponent of using a clamping device of some sort when playing LP's. A clamp of some type is better than none at all. I've primarily used record weights, but based on your video here I purchased the Michell clamp a few days ago (on that auction site). I've had it for a few days now, and I have to say it's the best purchase I have made in a long time. It works very similar to the VPI delrin clamp, except it's not a screw-down type for threaded spindles. The Michell really works, and now even the most warped LP's I have (fortunately not many!) are almost completed flattened out. Great review...thanks!

Thanks! Was looking into this but was on the fence. Did not know about the felt piece and how it can help with warped records and this video sold me on the clamp 👍

Couple of observations; You were putting considerable pressure on the TT platter, I'd be a little concerned for the bearing (if you happened to have a ruby/sapphire thrust ball it could shatter). I think I'd experiment with different washers. The Townshend Rock uses a similar clamping arrangment, but with an M5 thread in the spindle that the clamp screws into, so you can actually watch a dished record flatten as you tighten the clamp down, all with no pressure at all applied to the platter. I'd be inclined to use a nylon washer (as the Rock does), in fact to have selection of different thicknesses for different severities of warp, say from about 0.5 to 2.0mm, the actual gap seen at the edge of the record will tell you which one to use (you'll have to make them, but it's very easy - just grind them to thickness on sandpaper on a flat surface, takes a matter of minutes). I find I rarely need more than 1mm on my Rock. Edit - it takes surprisingly little pressure around the edge of the record lablel to flatten a dish-warp (or any warp, for that matter) out to the edge of the platter - most of the force used in this video was simply compressing that felt washer, not flattening the warp. Like I say, try a selection of nylon washers - you're basically selecting a shim size rather than using the one-size-fits-all approach that Michell do - they're just adhering to the KISS principle (Keep it SImple, Stupid) for the average user.
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 8 лет назад
I appreciate the notes. I've been using this clamp now quite awhile, always with concern for the table and its components. It may seem I'm using more pressure than I actually am. I assure you, all is well.
@EliteRock
@EliteRock 8 лет назад
Hi - thanks for reading and taking the time to reply. To clarify; with a solid shim no thicker than needed only a few ounces of pressure is needed to flatten a normal weight LP. Also, it isn't really necessary for the the entire surface to be clamped tightly to the platter surface. With a dish warp simply removing the worst of it and stabilising the disc so it's not teetering on the label is adequate. Tightly clamping (IOW rigidly coupling) a disc actually changes the sound substantially, and some don't like those changes - possibly cleaner and more accurate but at the same time some of the dynamics and are flattened (sic). I was speaking to Len Gregory ("the Cartridge Man") some years ago and he described the effect of clamping as "squashing the life out of them" (the sound of the discs). One of the early Dual CS505/506 series little conjuring tricks, which makes it so 'bouncy' and fun to listen to, is a result of the mat used - concentric ribs which were net concave. This was presumably to accomodate dish-warps, but it also has the effect of supporting most LP's only at their edges so they act like the sounding-board on a guitar - you can hear the music coming off the surface much more clearly than on other decks (later Duals used a heavier, flat mat with only a label recess). Clamping the disc makes the system more analogous to a solid-body instrument, like an electric guitar. As I say, it's trivially easy and quick to make a selection of nylon washers/shims of varying thicknesses using a sheet of sandpaper on a flat surface (e.g. glass, or just decent kitchen worktop), which I've been doing for years. BTW, nice channel, I'm now subsribed of course. ETA >> www.trans-fi.com/resomat.htm

@@EliteRock Thanks for the information. And I agree, reducing that initial pressure on the bearing the most important consideration if I were to consider a clamp. Even more interesting is the rest of the information you provided about sound differences, and even some of the drawbacks of clamping. Thanks for that too.

Awesome video and review of the JA Michell record clamp, Dan. Really nicely done! Can you tell me , in your estimation, how tall the spindle should be above the platter in order to get a sufficient grip, using the felt washer? Also, if you are using a turntable cover, can you estimate how much height above a record on the platter would be needed in order for the clamp to clear the cover? I'd appreciate any info. Many thx, Rob

good review. how much was this clamp, if you don't mind my asking. will it sometimes work better for one side of the record than the other due to the shape of the warp? and one more question, if you don't mind; what turntable upgrades do you think give you the best bang for the buck? i recently upgraded my platter to the Pro-Ject Acryl-it acrylic platter and haven't really noticed a sonic improvement and it didn't lessen static to the degree i was hoping for.
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 11 лет назад
It retails for about $60, but can be found on eBay for a bit less, just make sure to read their feedback first. The result is more dramatic with a warp like the one showed here, but it is useful with any and all records, even if your record is perfectly flat and you don't need a washer, it will keep your record closer to the platter. This is especially helpful with the acrylic platter. It can be a little slippery without a felt mat. Using a clamp definitely increases the platters effect. Mostly it just looks nice :) I also recommend the pro-ject speedbox.

I bought one of these from NeedleDoctor last month for my SL1200mk2. I had to make a thinner platter mat to allow me to use it, as my stock rubber Technics mat plus 1/8" cork mat didn't leave enough shaft exposed for the collet to clamp to. It could of course just be the placebo effect, but it does seem to make a small improvement in the sound and when used with the felt washer, is definitely a cure for playing warped records.

I have one and find that sometimes I have to press down twice to ensure the felt has created the suction needed to keep the album pressed to the platter. So, as a standard practice, I always press down once, without clamping, to see if it pops back up. If it doesn't pop up, I clamp it. If it does pop back up, I press down again and it's good after that. It works and makes a warped record less warped while playing.

Thanks for posting this. This appears to be a cheaper and lighter option than the Clearaudio Twister Clamp which is almost three times the price. I thought the Michell clamp was made out of Delrin but yours is made out of metal. Maybe the newer model is made out of Delrin? Do you know how much your clamp weighs? The Clearaudio version was ~180 grams and I would prefer something lighter given the DC motor on my turntable.

Apologies for any confusion, the base is derlin, I made note of that in the video with text. Feels like metal though. I'm sorry I don't know how much it weighs, but not much at all.

Hey, I just purchased one of these and for the majority of my warped records I'm quite disappointed. Most of mine have the warp where the cartridge and tonearm will ride like a wave once or twice per revolution. Some kind of vibrate each revolution. But the clamp doesn't seem to help with these. Do you have any tips?
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 9 лет назад
It won't eliminate every type of warp, but should help most. I'm still quite pleased and sometimes surprised at how well it can work. But sometimes, a warp is just too sharp to calm completely. As long as you're using the felt washer and clamping the way I demonstrated, not sure what else I can advise
@Creseba
@Creseba 9 лет назад
Okay sounds good - thanks. There's not a lot of info out there about what's a tolerable warp so it's tough for me to know if I'm overthinking the cartridge/tonearm movement.

Would you say it's a good idea to use it with a direct drive turntable? Some people say it would add undesirable extra vibration to the sound as the spindle is directly attached to the motor. Great video anyway.

Nan Man the turntable in this video is very close in construction to a pro-ject debut. Even has the same tonearm, so, I can say yes. Rega uses a shorter spindle which necessitates a special version, otherwise the standard model is the one to try.

Nicely explained! Getting one now so I can play my warped records again. One question (I'm still new to playing vinyl): you don't use any (felt or cork) mat on top of the acryl-it; is there a reason for that? I thought you were always 'supposed to' use a mat?

@vinylfury
@vinylfury 11 лет назад
yes, definitely makes a difference. getting the record as close to the platter as possible, reducing resonance and giving the cartridge a firm, flat surface to track improves reproduction from the groove, often with tighter bass. if a record isn't warped at all, even just placing the clamp over it without the washer underneath is useful.

Thank you for the informative video. Can you elaborate about the felt washer? What purpose does it actually serve? Based on what I see, it doesn't look necessary. I presume that it is necessary for reasons that aren't obvious.
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 7 лет назад
Thanks! Without the washer, the record in this video would not flatten over it. You can use the clamp without it anytime, but to accomdate a warp like this, the felt washer plays a vital role. It does become obvious when you use it in that scenario.
@MrLivingNitemare
@MrLivingNitemare 8 лет назад
Silly question. Can you use the clamp, obviously depending on what kind of warp you have, with a regular mat if the felt washer is not necessary? Of do you recomend placing the record directly on the platter, either when using or not using the felt washer, for all use with the clamp? My mind says one thing, but figured I would ask. Great video, thanks!
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 8 лет назад
+Taylor Hansen My platter is meant to be used without a mat. Having a mat on your platter is typical, and the clamp can be used with the washer or without. Typically the only time I used it without is if the record is actually 180-200 gram and won't quite allow the clamp to stay in place. Otherwise, I use it all the time regardless if the record is warped or not. It just helps tighten everything up, in my experience. The clamp is still useful without it though.

Dan O))) That was a really informative and also professional. The video footage looked three dimensional. You got right on top of the record so it was nice that I did not have full screen it. I know from experience that some warps are tough to see. But a dish warp is really visible. I know that they warps can effect the angle of the stylus from meeting the groove properly. So when I saw how cool the JAM Clamp smoothed out the dish I was amazed. Between the Audio Technica and the JAM Clamp I am going to have to work some extra hours after Christmas. Manual turntable and record clamp is a lot of dedication just to play 5 or 6 songs. - Count me in... Am I correct in assuming the idea of a clamp vs weight is to not strain the motor or belt?
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 3 года назад
It is less of a concern to have a clamp vs. a weight on most tables, yes. Some tables can do just fine with a weight, some weights are made to be ideal for certain turntables. What is great about a clamp like this is that it is nearly universal in its intended application.

Dan, Nice demo but I was hoping to see how exactly the mechanics of this thing works. i.e. when turning the bolt at the top, exactly what is pinching the spindle? For $60, I would how it is made to last and of course not blemish the spindle.
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 10 лет назад
I realized after I uploaded that I did fail to show the mechanics of the clamp underneath. The 'clamp' mechanism is three aluminium pieces that clamp together as a circle as the knob turns. very sturdy. As tight as I've often turned it, I'm not noticing any adverse effect on the spindle itself. I see it lasting a long time. Hope that helps!

How does this affect DJ applications? When the clamp is on, is the record firmly fixed to the spindle? Are you able to back cue or scratch without stopping the platter? Thanks in advance for any reply.
@vinylfury

It is affixed to the spindle, that's how it clamps the record against the platter, as shown. I don't see why it would affect back cue, but it doesn't seem practical for DJ use, in regards to constantly switching records.

Hey there, Dan! Thanks for the great video. I have ordered and am expecting my clamp to arrive any day now. One question tho. I have a couple of records that are sort of "bowl shaped". When you put on one side the center doesn't touch the platter and when you flip the side the edges don't touch the platter. Would you use the felt washer with both sides or only when edges don't touch the platter? I mean is it necessary to use the felt washer if you can just clamp the center down?
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 8 лет назад
This type of warp is most remedied by the clamp. Sure it would be fine to use it without a washer with bowl facing downward, but the washer can still be helpful in maintaining stability. I would use it anyway. Enjoy!

Looks like this record clamp is very similar to the Dynavox VC80. But there is no felt washer with the Dynavox VC80 record clamp, and your video nicely demonstrated how this works very effectively. Dished or warped records are quite an annoyance these days, it seems like perhaps 30% to 50% of new vinyl is affected by this to some extent. I also have a so-called "Vinyl Flat" device which works quite well on most new records, but not so well on used records in general. And there is a risk that you could ruin the record using the vinyl flat. Does not happen very often, I would say in less than 5% of cases. Anyhow, sometimes you have a warped record that you just have to deal with, and then this type of record clamp can come in very handy. If you want to see the video I made, you can click on my user name and you will find the video there. Thanks for uploading this nice demonstration. Well done. And the orange red vinyl looks great on that turntable.

Would using the washer on every record possibly harm one of them if it isn't warped? If I get one of these I would probably just clamp every record regardless to get a good flat play, and it would be easier to just leave the washer on all the time

Hello. I'm looking to replace my 1 lb Sleeve City Record Weight with this clamp. I am curious as i found 2 other clamps on Amazon (Signstek and Nobsound) that are identical (but cheaper) to the Michell clamp. Would you have any thoughts on these?
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 6 лет назад
I don't have any experience with either of those. The Michell has been good enough that my search ended years ago :)

the video is great. I have a question, I use a Pioneer PL-10 turntable that I bought 43 years ago. It has a belt drive. Is this clamp ok to use on a belt drive turntable? I don't want any pressure on the motor or belt..

Thanks! I don't think belt vs direct is a concern for operation.

In what scenarios would you not need to use the washer? Thanks for the review

If the record isn't warped at all, or if it is too thick to tighten with the washer underneath

Hi I am looking to use this clamp for the MMF 2.2. When I called up Michell they mentioned they do not have a specific model and have no Idea about the suitability to a Musichall MMF 2.2 Turn Table. Can you please assist with the Model number of your Clamp and also what other info you provided to "JA MICHELL" Appreciate your support.
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 9 лет назад
there is no special version for a Music Hall, only for a Rega. I have the standard clamp which I use on my MMF 2.2, as seen in the video. All works well.

***** Hi Thanks for your Reply. Can you please clarify how the clamp would fix with the "Spindle" in the Turntable without any thread. I shall proceed to purchase one, once I hear from you.
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 9 лет назад
The part that clamps around the spindle is separated into pieces that tighten with the turn of the knob. You'll see.

Will the clamp take warps out if leaving the vinyl on the platter over night?
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 7 лет назад
No it will not
@dirtywater5336
@dirtywater5336 10 лет назад
How does the knob tighten around the spindle with no threads? Does it matter that my spindle is plastic and is squared off instead of rounded? I don't think i can use this anyway because my record player is a suspension table and you clearly need to push down on the turntable
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 10 лет назад
Doesn't sound like it would be compatible with your situation, as you seem to have gathered. But the 'clamp' portion is in three pieces which tighten around the spindle to make a circle as the knob is turned, and separate when it is removed, eliminated the need for a thread.

do you play the record with the record clamp attached to the record and turntable?
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 7 лет назад
Essentially. The clamp attaches to the spindle, and applies enough pressure over label surface area to hold it against the platter snugly.

Really Nice vid. Can I use one of these on my pro-ject carbon espirit? The best quality records I own seem to be from the 60s. Before they went lightweight in the late 70s and 80s. I recently weighed some of my Stones and jazz albums from the 60s. They weigh from 170-195 grams and none are warped and the sound is still so dynamic and Rich.
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 7 лет назад
I'm sure you could. Yeah, I hardly ever have issues with pre-70s albums that were taken care of over the years.

Nice demonstration. However it does not work on A Technics SL1200 if you have a thin felt, or cork mat it will not grab the spindle.
@bearxcity
@bearxcity 5 лет назад
is it because the spindle isn't long enough? they make a version of this clamp marketed for Rega tables since they have shorter spindles and I've seen people mention that they use them on Pro-ject or other tables with short spindles. it's ten dollars more for some reason, but maybe worth a shot.

If the vinyl is not warp why some people still put clamp on? Does it improve sound quality?
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 7 лет назад
by securing it closely to the platter and providing stabilization, yes it can improve sound quality over all and tracking accuracy. same reason many high end turntables utilize clamps or weights.

I couldn't tell you for sure, I'm not familiar with that table. But, after taking a brief look online, it doesn't seem like that table would support the application of the clamp over time. The clamp costs about half of what that table typically does, so I would save that money for a future upgrade, in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
