Here, we would normally address anyone elderly as 'uncle' or 'auntie' in whichever language. Even calling someone 'brother', 'sister', 'mother' is absolutely cool, obviously acc to age. I call my grocery vendors, cab drivers and even the watchmen within the apartment complex 'brother' - it's just how we address people :) . It's that feeling of being one big community, no matter which state you are traveling in. Kids are normally taught not to address elders by their names directly as a sign of respect, whether the people are known or unknown is not important. So we just end up doing that automatically even in cities. Here esp, Aditya is addressing a family member of a house he has stayed in. So it would be considered very rude if he addressed Geet's father or uncle directly by name.

The half wife thing is just a Indian saying or proverb kinda thing. It doesn’t literally mean half wife but that you have to take care of/respect your sister in law like you take care of your wife meaning she is also family. It has no other meaning except treating them as family as well but here they are using that as a joke! And it sounds weird as a direct translation.

If the person is similar to your age or slightly elder... Like same generation... We use bhaiya (in the north) or Anna (in the south) both meaning brother. Some people also use dost (friend) for bhai (brother in a cashual way) for people slightly younger... Not really governed by any strict cultural rules. Just out of respect for for others...

For instance, I speak hindi with "non-gujarati" friends, gujarati at home and english at work or with clients (or other professional place). Just a few days back, I was having lunch with friends and while paying I received a call from client, I was speaking with him over the phone in english. With the restro guy I was talking in gujarati and my friend made comment and I responded to him in hindi. This is very common in India and nothing fancy about it.

The sub-titles show a direct translation of the Hindi word into "half wife". It is a cultural thing wherein people take responsibility of the siblings of their spouse. So if the husband has younger siblings, the wife takes care of them like she does her husband. The husband too looks after the siblings of his wife, like if they are in college, he goes to drop them off, buys them things they need etc. He takes care of his sister-in-law's needs like she too is his wife. It sounds weird if you say "half-wife", but it refers to the fact that all siblings of your spouse are as important to you as your spouse.
