Jabiru Engine Inspection & Overview
As well as the preflight, one of the other tasks we have to do as part of the daily inspection is checking out the engine itself.
In this video, my instructor provides a good overview of the major systems you'll find during a Jabiru engine inspection, as well as some of the things to look out for. Please note that this video is not an actual engine inspection, but a video made for educational purposes on the components and workings of a Jabiru engine.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is important to stay outside the arc of the propeller at all times. For the purpose of filming this video, the engine was disabled and could not start.
ABOUT ME:
I'm a student pilot learning to fly in my spare time. I originally received 30 hours of flying instruction 17 years ago and now I'm back in the cockpit and learning how to fly all over again.
Currently flying out of Wollongong (YWOL), Australia in light sport aircraft such as the Jabiru and Pipestrel alpha with Fly Illawarra:
Fly Illawarra: www.flyillawarra.com.au/
Recreation Aviation Australia: www.raa.asn.au/
Jabiru aircraft: jabiru.net.au/

haha, "Make sure there are no redbacks" so Australian haha. This is great, having an aussie learning is very cool. All the student vids I have found so far are American and whilst they're great, there is something very "home" about hearing the Australian accents. Great work RJW, thank you for sharing :)

Great video, thanks! One question, there's an aluminium L-shape on each side under the cylinder heads, fixed with the valve cover bolts. That's not standard issue, I believe. What are they for?

scsirob it’s an attempt to keep the engine and oil from overheating. They get hot, then the aluminum heads actually get soft and pinging also starts destroying the pistons and valves. After only 450hrs my engine is now a boat anchor in the shape of a junk Jabiru 2200. People on here will tell you my engine wasn’t taken care of properly. Whatever, those engines have to be treated with kit gloves and everything has to be perfect and if you are lucky, you may get up to 800hrs but I have seen very few that make it that high. Oh they may still run, but one look though a bore scope and only a fool would take it up for even one more flight. Never ever buy such a junk engine..ever

Good video. Specially the thru bolt. They fixed that on newer engines per CASA also the cylinder overheating. Your CFI knows his jabirus

One question for your instructor, does the jabiru last well when its not hangared and just on tied down? here hangars are expensive and there is a waiting list.

Ariel N that was one of the main reason he chose a Jabiru. we live near the coast so corrosion is a real problem for aircraft outside. The Jabiru being fibreglass does suffer as much and can be hangered outside without much issue.

Romeo Juliet Whiskey thank you. Good point. Its like the bush planes in Alaska. Rugged like a jeep. Must be neat to fly them in the australian bush. I have been a passenger on Alaskan float planes. Amazing how old the planes are. Super mechanical but they work.

Ashley Atze Ian has a good RU-vid site called Biggles Alganon that you probably want to check out

I've been following your flying journey on you tube. One of my other favourite you tubes sites is: MzeroA Flight Training. I think you might like it too.

Incessant use of the word “yeah” with microphone close to the mouth was annoying.

Do you mean acknowledging what is being said? In English speaking countries this is normal.

@@miheadhurts No, I can assure you there is nothing normal about 75 “yeahs” in a short clip, unless you’re linguistically challenged.

@@RomeoJulietWhiskey I tried again but from my computer instead of my phone. Huge difference! I was able to watch it and hear what was being said. Thank you, great video.

RJW--- If you're going to make and post videos to the public "for educational purposes", do some homework first about making videos. There you will discover that when in a windy area, GET SOME $10 WINDSCREENS for your microphones. 10 minutes in and I have to go. Very annoying & distracting!
