As a New Zealander living in Spain , not able to visit my father back home due to Adern's authoritarian-like restrictions, Murray is 100% right. I haven't noticed an inkling of empathy from Adern toward the 1000's of NZers in my situation.

Here in New Zealand, I used to work at the Debt Unit of Work and Income (the social services agency in this country) and honestly, whilst working there, whilst management and many of the collections officers during the team meeting said that they "care" about the clients, or that we're suppose to "empathize" with the clients, in truth, they couldn't give a F-CK- about them. I mean, these collections officers and case managers would smile as they talked to clients, say nice words, act all sweet and polite, but in candor, they were lying to these clients straight to their face (the clients knew they were being lied to, the COs & CMs knew that the clients knew that they were being lied to but the COs & CMs kept lying anyway), threatening them, with wage deductions or bank deductions, and they did all this whilst keeping a fake smile on their face, with an "aww, woe is you" tone in their voice, in an almost mocking manner. All these collections officers at W&I wanted was to collect money from poor and desperate people, whilst putting on a fake smile, soft voice and saying nice words, all to make the ministry look good. Nevermind that many of these clients were people like single mums living in their car, suicidal people who were depressed, abused kids who were kicked out of foster care after they turned 21, etc. These so called public servants I worked with are truth be told just lying, somewhat sociopathic, career climbers who put on a fake smile, say nice words, as they do it. I took a job with Work and Income because I genuinely wanted to help people but after a year of working there, I realized that they cbf helping anyone and just wanted to harass clients to collect money, and surpass their KPIs. Whilst working there, I was earning up to $75,000+ per year but I hated it so much that I actually quit and took a publishing/research job that only paid $68,000 per year but at least I didn't have to be fake or B.S. anyone. Jacinda is the embodiment of these fake, career climbing, so called, public servants. PS: I have met real & genuine public servants and case managers both here in NZ and in the USA (where my husband is from) who were blunt, crass, straight to the point and somewhat rude, but they did genuinely care about their clients, would go out of their way to help people and did tell the clients exactly what to do to get the help they need. They just didn't do it with a fake smile on their face or say nice words.

I saw through Ardern ages ago - way back with her very public, hijab-ed, hugging of a refugee. As a way of ostensibly expressing her empathy for the Christchurch mosque shooting victims. 🙄 What a shameless way to make it about oneself, I thought to myself. Donning the clothes literally millions of women are compelled to wear in certain countries (forgot feminism momentarily I suppose), for a nice publicity stunt while wounds were still searingly fresh. Surely nobody would fall for this, I scoffed. Fall for it they did though. And hard. She had to opportunistically turn herself into a socialist dictator, for people to see her for what she is.

One thing I note is Adern talks down to the public as if she’s talking to a class of grade one students.

The recent episode of a pregnant lady journalist holed up in Afghanistan who was temporarily banned from returning to her homeland, New Zealand, to give birth to her child because of an extremely strict Covid lockdown, is a case in point. I suggest it was only because of the negative press the matter generated that caused the unempathetic, unsympathetic Ardern to relent.

As someone living in NZ I can say her rule is awful. People are no longer entitled to get their drivers licence unless they have a current c v pass.
