The operator on the phone was none other than the lovable Bea Benaderet (Cousin Pearl from The Beverly Hillbillies and Kate Bradley from Petticoat Junction). She had several small roles on Jack's show. She was wonderful. Sadly, She passed away during the 6th season of Petticoat Junction. The show should have been canceled after her death but it went to finish season 6 and season 7 when CBS. Canceled all their rural shows. This act has been referred to as "The Rural Purge".
@9:10. In 1954, when this was filmed, the smog in LA was almost as bad as Pittsburgh's steel mill.pollution. it took until 1961 for California to mandate PCVs on all passenger cars. That kept things from getting even worse, but it took until the 1990s for the air to finally begin to clear. Now, the air's cleanee as it ever was any time in 20th century. Lesson: pollution controls wotk.
I love these old Jack Benny programs on RU-vid. There’s nothing to watch on television these days. It’s easy to see how much more effort was put into programming then today. Television entertained people back then.
Your house could be on fire back then but you still had to use good etiquette and put on your slippers and robe before you ran out to save your life. Love it. lol.
I love these shows - but is Rochester an employee or a slave? What right has Benny asking a grown man what was he doing out at night? I know this is only a comedy and that is part of it - yet I can't help thinking that some bosses are truly like that - they think they have the right to know about a person's private life. I wish even in the show Rochester had said, "None of your business boss!"
