W.C. Fields - The Diner Sketch

[From "Kovacs Corner" on RU-vid.com] - William Claude Dukenfield, known professionally as W.C. Fields, with his bizarre and iconoclastic sense of humor, certainly influenced Ernie Kovacs. It had been written that when Fields delivered the story outline of this 1941 film, "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break", the suits at Universal Studios thought the film was so surreal that they recut and reshot parts of it. After which they quietly released the film to movie theaters and Fields from his contract. This sketch, featuring character actress Jody Gilbert, gives a new meaning to the term "customer service".
[Updated October 16, 2010]
I found this in the Wikipedia dictionary...
"Gosha" is also the beloved name of "Chuminji", a cute and baby Indian god of good health. He is favourite of pink-rosy cheeked plump kids. Hithero popular with small kids, the god is supposed to be childlike. He is offered "pohe" (an indian dish consisting of flattened rice) and "gulaabjaamuns" (also known as "waffle balls", it a dough consisting mainly of milk solids and flour in a sugar syrup flavored with cardamom seeds and rosewater or saffron) in worship. He rides on a duck and keeps a rabbit as an advisor and a cat as bodyguard. He lives in "Goshdesh". When happy, he blesses anyone with pink skin and plenty of fats, making them look babylike.
I can only suppose that he was throwing a thinly vailed comment about the waitress' (Jody Gilbert) large stature?

Jody Gilbert, terrific character actress - sadly she was blacklisted in the 50's but still amassed over 115 film & Tv credits. She is memorable in BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID as the argumentative lady during train robbery. She died in a car crash at the age of 62.

Jody Gilbert worked right up to 1976 & appeared in "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid," with Newman & Redford. She also appeared in the successful horror film "Willard," & her last film was the Sam Elliott "Lifeguard" picture. In 1939 she was also in "Ninotchka" a Greta Garbo film. On TV she appeared in "Love American Style," "Sanford & Son," & countless commercials. She was only 62 when she died from injuries in a car crash in 1979. In this episode in 1941 -- with W.C. Fields, she's only 25 & has a sexy voice for a big woman. She also managed to slip by a double entendre past the censors at 2:53: "There's something awfully big about you..." she says to Fields. He's flattered and thanks her as he butters his toast. And she adds quickly -- "Your nose." She turns her back and starts to wipe down the counter with her butt quite prominent. Fields adds -- "there's something awfully big about you too." What an ideal team they made. They should've done more films together.

Oh no, not another Boomer whiner, how original... 😱 As if ALL the comedy in the whole wide world had suddenly stopped after the '40s ! Really ? You must be such fun at parties, always reminiscing of the "good 'ole days", whinin' and bitchin' about how the kids dont know anything and can only create crap and all, right ? Take note: since the '40s, at least EIGHT generations of writers and comedians and creators of all types were born by the thousands. And just like previous generations, have attracted millions of spectators and fans, what do you have to say about that ? That they're are bad ? Useless ? Worthless ? Who do you think you are ? Open up your mind, you really need to. Really ! 🙄

He was a very sincere person at home. He had a pond in his front yard, and one day the little son of the next door neighbor ( I believe to be Anthony Quinn and the daughter one of the studio heads) drowned in the pond trying to get to the miniature sailboat that Fields kept. he never got over it and had the pond drained and filled in.

Two things to know: For one thing, boater hats like WC has here were used until fall, then the owner would put his fist through it to punch out the top, and then throw it out. This means that in the movie WC took the hat out of trash like a bum would have. The other thing is that the cellophane used back then was as flammable as gunpowder. That's why it went up like a torch when he tried to light his cigar at the end.

@@johngoodwin4811 it's a joke that's mildly funny on a few different levels His high blood pressure was likely caused by worry over money (or the stress of working and saving). When he lost his money he says he "had to give up" his high blood pressure - as though it was a hobby that he he could no longer afford. It reverses cause and the effect. The joke is also that a person may need to give up a boat or a horse or a fancy car because their financial situation changed. Here he is sort of complaining that he had to give up something that's unwanted. The customer says, almost timidly, "Excuse me miss, this sandwich has mayo, and I requested no mayo." She glares at him, comes back, takes the two pieces of bread off the sandwich, wipes the mayo off from both on the side of the table, grabs the meat and places it back between the two pieces of bread She glares at him every harder, turns, and walks off, lol. An old, blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake, finds his way to a barstool and orders a shot of Jack Daniels..After sitting there for a while, he yells to the bartender, > > "Hey, you wanna hear a blond joke?" The bar immediately falls absolutely silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to the old blind cowboy says, "Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five important things: 1 The bartender is a blond girl who's holding a baseball bat. 2. The bouncer is a blond girl with a billy-club. 3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blond woman with a black belt in karate. 4. The woman sitting next to me is blond and a professional weightlifter. 5. The lady to your right is blond and a professional wrestler. Now, think about it seriously, Cowboy. Do you still wanna tell that blond joke? The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters, "Well hell no, not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times."

Rodney Dangerfield: "This steak still has marks from where the jockey was hitting it!" Caddy Shack. Hey doll, could stir up more drinks for the table and tell the cook this is low-grade dog food! Bends to one side and cuts a humongous wet fart the whole country club dining room hears - he looks around dumbfounded and says" somebody step on a duck?" His table is laughing - he gets up, with one leg askance, looks at a guest who is not amused, and says; Geesh, the graveyard is two blocks down the street to the left!" His entire comedy routine was one insult after another - much like W.C. Fields.
