Jack Charlton ended his playing career in 1973 and as part of his testimonial year an All-Star team turned out for a match at his home town ground of Portland Park in Ashington, where he played in his junior years. His All-Star team included England's Nobby Stiles and Colin Bell, Leeds and Wales goalkeeper Gary Sprake, Middlesborough's John Craggs, Brian O'Neill, Brian Chambers and Mick McGiven from Sunderland, Brian Joicey from Sheffield Wednesday, John Farrington from Leicester, and for half the game, Jack's uncle Stan Milburn, who played League football for three clubs. Also there was Jack's brother Bobby, his mother's cousin ex-Newcastle United star Jackie Milburn. The game, against Ashington's Northern League side was a 3-3 draw.
