There's something classic about Jack Daniels that other whiskeys can't imitate. I've been branching out, trying different types and styles of whisk(e)ys, and coming back to jack is like putting on old shoes for me. It's comforting in a way.
I came into bourbon (and whisky -or whiskey) late in life. I’m a retired Navy Officer and a retired federal law enforcement officer…..so fitness and care as to what I consumed, was paramount to my continued success in both careers. My parents lived in Tennessee in their final retirement years….and one of the last day trips we took with our “southern born and bred” mother, was to the Jack Daniels distillery. She wasn’t doing too well in those final years….still, she tried to be a “good trooper”….and for me, insisted on accompanying me on the Distillery Tour. On the tour, she became confused, rattled….exhausted. I opted to get her back to the lobby where my infirmed father (couldn’t do the tour) waited. The staff there, was so kind, and understanding…..and helpful. I was frustrated ….as I didn’t realize how bad Mom was doing. Regardless, the staff being so kind, listened to my mother’s ramblings. It was then and there, that I became a JD fan…..and as they were such “gentlemen and gentle ladies”, every sip of Gentleman Jack I take, takes me back to that sunny day in Lynchburg. I really enjoyed your review….I poured a few ounces myself, amigo….to sip while viewing. Thank you, sir!
Sampled this tonight. 4th whiskey I've tried and trying to develop my palet with the different tastes and aromas. I'm sure it'd make for a nice mixer, but even from the small sample size I've experienced so far (macellen gold, laphroiag 10, glenfiddich 12 and this) I can see why more experienced folk aren't impressed. It isn't unpleasant, but it doesn't exactly blow you away. Compared to other things it's a bit one dimensional. I wish I'd have tried this first as I think I'd have enjoyed it a lot more without a frame of reference to compare it to other things.
When I first tried this I didn't care for it too much, gave the bottle away after about half. I will say it has a very different flavour than the Scotch Whiskies I'm used to and I sometimes consider trying it again to see if my tastes have changed over time.
I'm a lifelong fan of Jack Daniels. Someone mentioned to me Gentleman Jack many years ago, so of course I immediately gave it a shot. When I tried it out and I thought, well this is basically a slightly different and perhaps better tasting version of Jack Daniels. But for those who like Jack Daniels, they're generally happy with the original No 7. We're not looking for anything super complicated.
You should probably ignore any negative comments you get from liquor snobs, at the end of the day liquor was meant to get you feeling good and gentleman jack does that while being smooth and tasty, mission accomplished.
I've been drinking a lot of Scotch lately. Haven't had a Tennessee whiskey in a long time, tried this last week and it was literally undrinkable to me. I'm able to drink cheap ~$20 scotch all day, but I could not get through a full glass of this.
A good review. I saw some other review videos that more or less denigrated it simply because it was smoother than standard Jack. Since when is a harsher whiskey better?
watching you make Jack look more expensive than it is was entertaining lol but any American knows we only drink this with Old No. 7 with coke...that is all they are both good for.
It isn't wretched, but it isn't a big "Wow" either. I usually keep some on hand as it's an okay "Gateway " whiskey. Beginners seem to like it at first.
I used to drink single malt scotch exclusively because I thought drinking scotch seemed more "sophisticated". I finally came to my senses and admitted to myself that scotch tastes like sh*t. Gentleman Jack and Maker's Mark are my go to's for whiskey.
I said the same thing as you, until I had a glass of Macallan 12 on ice. That was the only scotch that didn't make me want to wretch. I still prefer my bourbon.
Yes, apparently so. It is one of the best selling whiskies in the world and not all Jack Daniel's bottlings are bad. Take Jack Daniels No. 27 Gold, for example.
