My brother and I loved Jacks playing....we studied all of Jacks works in the 70s and 80s. We especially loved his ECM works...my brother stylized his drumming from Jacks technique..
One of my five favorite drum solos of all time. Jack is my favorite drummer as well. Saw him at the Blue Note in '94 with Gateway: Dave Holland on bass and John Abercrombie on guitar. Opening act was John Scofield's trio.
Playing double-strokes uniformly and loud is in no way an easy means/shortcut for “sounding fast”. Also, I guarantee you that isn’t what Mr. DeJohnette’s intentions were anyway.
Playing doubles is far more orchestral than singles. Check out Carlock or Joey Baron to understand the use in soloing is not cheating for speed, it's fluidity of motion and and sound.
