The Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at Dartmouth presents:
Working toward a complete functional atlas of the human brain
Given by Jack Gallant - Chancellor's Professor of Psychology, University of California at Berkeley
Abstract
The structure and function of the human brain are very closely linked. Neuroanatomists have made much progress in obtaining good anatomical parcellations of the human brain and recent technical advances might make it possible to recover detailed structural topography and structural connectivity from living individuals. In contrast, cognitive neuroscientists have made much less progress in obtaining a detailed functional parcellation of the human brain, and most of the studies that have attempted to do this have been based on passive resting state correlations that have no clear functional assignment. My laboratory is engaged in a broad effort to obtain a detailed functional percolation of the human brain that reveals how sensory and cognitive features are represented across the cortical mantle; to understand how these representations are modulated by to-down processes such as attention, learning and memory; and to determine the correspondence between functional and structural neuroanatomy. In this talk I will discuss our approach to this problem, and I will provide a few clear examples showing how this approach reveals detailed functional maps in individual brains. Finally, I will show how these results suggest that we should revise several commonly held beliefs about the functional organization and the operation of the human brain.

What an absolutely fantastic lecture. Dr. Gallant was on the money from minute one when he said "80 billion neurons in the brain", so many in the field still parrot the 100 billion number. His disregard for anatomical areas and focus on "functional areas" of the brain is also another on the money insight, in reality that's how the brain's cortex should be looked at, through the functional roles played during various tasks... which brings me to the most salient point of the lecture, the way the functions of the neurons and areas of the brain dynamically change in response to varied tasks and types of attention being paid. This is over looked too much in many studies to the detriment of the final results being published. Once again, what a fantastic lecture, thank you so much for uploading it to youtube.

@1:02:20 "...we won't be able to see the lower part of the columns until the next gen fMRI which will be in about 5 years and we'll get down to 500 micron resolution." Well, they just announced the new fMRI the other day, and they were able to get down to 5 microns!

Thank you for providing CC (subtitles). Jack Gallant speaks so fast and a bit muffled in parts; it was great to confirm what he said. :)

We do have a clue about how the PFC does (all) task-realted actions. We are not in total blank. The salience network, for example, is essential for this. Is a complex dynamic system, but the argument that we do not know at all about how our brain does this, is just not true

Elkron Goldberg wrote a very good book detailing the role the salience, default and central executive networks play in the brain in regards to creativity. It's a great read from a distinguished neuroscientist. It's called: Creativity, The Human Brain in the age of innovation.
