The Columbus Zoo's Jack Hanna spoke emotionally about the SeaWorld trainer that was killed by a killer whale and defended the marine animal park's policies.
Jack Hanna what ARE YOU DOING? totally disrespectful and not willing to listen and understand st all, even say that SeaWorld saves Orcas😯😯😯. I used to have a lot of respect listening to him but NO MORE JACK. he is delusional
Actually you are very wrong. Seaword's pools we're entirely too small for an orca. The are equivalent to us as the size of a bathtub. And if they have been in captivity long enough the won't be able to be released. If a whale cannot be returned to its natural home they should at least give it a proper sized forever home. I'm not saying the seaworld trainers are bad, in fact they are very great, but if seaword has all of this money for new shows and attractions the could add on or even upgrade the tanks. Jack Hannah knows what he's talking about so don't question him!!!!
He is really trying to cover for Sea World. How can he compare this to astronauts? He really wants to keep capturing animals. Tilly was not born into captivity, he was kidnapped from the ocean. No wonder he is so angry and stressed.
Nurse Jackie put the whale back in the ocean then it dies. Refuses to go back. Millions spent on ONE captive whale they tried to release. Would barely roam and it died within 2 years.
I love your stuff, Jack. But he avoided the question of the animal's mental state because of being in close quarters captivity. If your argument to keep an animal in a confined space which has the possibility to make it violent to it's keepers is to learn more about the animal you are torturing, I would question how much of an animal lover you really are. let alone the people that are meant to take care of them.
That animal should be in the wild or euthanized. These are big animals that want a big environment. They shouldn't be doing tricks for human entertainment.
@@irinaivanovic9792 If it's not feasible to release into the wild, then they should be euthanized to prevent further tragedies. I just think we should stop capturing such animals as it is inappropriate to use them for entertainment.
@@denisenoe1534 NO, this is an entertainment business. These orcas made more than enough money for these marine land's. There are rehabilitation centers where the orcas could have a whole bay, being fed from humans and maybe humans can see them from far, but they deserve this treatment and not a bathtop without shade and being drugged up every day.
I can't believe people are surprised over this. We know that they are social animals and have family dynamics and yet we rip them from their families and essentially lock them in a "bedroom" for the rest of their life and have them perform for meals. Any human would most likely "snap" under such circumstances. Enough with Sea world and making money, its something that needs to stop. Leave the wild animals in the wild!
You know sea world paid alot of people off to make Dawn look like the guilty one... I would not be surprised if they paid him for his 10 minutes famous input too
"I don't know what stress is to a whale." Yeah, but Jack, you don't need to. All you need to know is what a swimming pool and a human built, human serving entertainment amphitheater is to an ocean roaming, social, and hunting animal such as an Orca. You, the animal knowledge man, man with 40 years experience with wondrous animals (or 40 years in the "business," as you say, operative word, of an animal operative, perhaps) - can you get that? I would think you should be able to. If I'm close to correct about that, then your interest is not in the animals, but in your interests. And you are not for them, not for us either, really. We're customers to sell to, and sell the bill of goods as to your motivation, also, I feel.
No, I would not blame a lion that kills a man who walks into the cage. And I don't blame the orca either. We have to understand that from the animal point of view, humans can be seen as their captivers (is there this word in english??)... They might not be as fond of us as we are of them. We may 'love' these animals, but we are holding them captive, no matter how good our intentions are. This whale just wants to be free and live it's natural life.
I understand he has his job on the line, and that its either kissing ass, or the chopping block, but I think he has more than enough dough to leave Sea World and do his own thing free from any more "guilt".
@Sandypetr Thanks for pointing out Tili wasn't born in captivity, I did not realize that... Did your source metion how long she was in captivity? That could be a big factor too.
I find it interesting that he would say that the loss of Dawn's life & Keltie's life (The situation with Daniel Dukes isn't fully clear but the autopsy did show Tilikum injured him either pre-death or postmortem) and also Alexis' life, though Tilikum wasn't responsible in that case, are worth it to 'save' Killer Whales. It's horrifying to hear that 3 to 4 peoples lives were less valuable than the seaquarium industry! I get his point that Steve Irwin and he would risk their lives for their work to further understanding and ensure the future welfare (as he perceives captivity to be) of animals. That's fine if he willingly puts his life on the line for what he believes in, but would Dawn? Maybe, she did love her job and the animals. But what about young Keltie and Alexis? Alexis was very concerned for his own safety and unfortunately lost his life before he made the final decision to leave. It was a summer job for Keltie, who had other aspirations. The problem lies in the fact that SeaWorld and other such places obviously see their trainers' lives as acceptable payment toward furthering their objectives--very similar to how they see the whales in their "collection". They earn 70% from Shamu Stadium alone and the whales don't receive larger pools and better conditions. The trainers risk injury and death and the whales lose their freedom, families, health and ultimately their lives through premature death--and for what? Yes we have gained knowledge, public interest and awareness, and the trainers love these animals but the main reason is money. It's the bottom line.
@19Martinez79 I totally agree!!! Free the dolphins and the whales, they need to live and play in their natural habitat!!! It's all about people getting rich through the suffering of these beautiful animals.
FACT : When the whales were not preforming in the pools they were kept in a dark tank so small that they could not move .The was equivalent to the size of a human in a casket. Also deprived of food to get them to cooperate in the shows they put on for the public. It all needs to be against the law.
She was 2 yrs old when she was taken from her parents, whales are very family oriented & she would have been with them at the time. She is 30 years old now, so that would be in captivity for 28 years. So sad, her parents were probably stressed & sad to lose her. Dawn, the trainer thought of her as her own child but she was not- she had real parents. She has been in that park for 25 of those years. Swimming around same pool in circles for 25 years! Whales in nature can travel 100 miles a day.
I have no sympathy for these trainers who keep such large beautiful animals in a "theme park" - it's grotesque. This Hanna guy can't talk his way out of it. ".....this is the type of work we do....." BullS***
Jennifer Shearouse I could not agree more! These are the same people who "heard" about the deaths at Santa Anita and now want horseracing banned. People who actually work there know the truth.
No she was not born in captivity, she was taken from her parents in the wild when she was two. She has been in captivity since then and she is 30 yrs old.
Put them back into the ocean?! Seriously? You saw what happened to Keiko. What makes you think it will work for any other? THey aren't introduced to natural sickness while in captivity. The ocean is a WHOLE different story. Give me one whale that you released SUCCESSFULLY back into the ocean AFTER it was raised in captivity. I dare you!
Actually, Jack Hanna is a very intelligent man. Though he can't read animals minds, he can read their body language, which would indicate whether or not they are stressed. Sea World isn't just an entertainment park. It is a research facility that uses the profits from the park to fund their research, such as whale artificial insemination. As for the NASA comment, he was making a comparison because both jobs come with the risk of being killed. That was his point.
It is absolutely astounding that Jack Hanna has the audacity to say that "it is not Tilly's fault" for killing a human being (victim #2) simply because he was trespassing. Moreover, given that Tilly allegedly snatched this victim (as KW do seals) while she was at water's edge, I surmise the same was true of victim #2. A killer is a killer is a killer. Deal and get real, Jack.
And you spoke it intelligently, that is why I respect it even if I don't agree. See "MyDadsRubberBroke" you can disagree without insulting people and namecalling.
Guys, accidents happen. Especially with large animals. But, it's like what he said in the video, in the end this is what's going to be best for the species. And their animals come from other facilities, not the wild. Stop hating on these facilities, they could be these animal's last hope.
I like how the media bashes Tillikum by bringing up the past incidents. Yes, he was involved in the death of a trainer at sealand in 1991, then again so were two other females; Haida and Nootka. What do you expect with animals that have never had anyone in the water with them, their still animals. That and you cant blame him for the 1999 incident, the man Daniel Dukes who snuck in, was both retarded and hammered, and died of hypothermia.
I'll also tell you this, Sea World doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of money. It really is a losing aspect of the companys business. They do it for the love of the animals and to educate children In case you didn't know, it was owned by HBJ, on of this countries largest text book epublishers.
Have I got it wrong, or I just heard that this whale had already killed another trainer? Sorry folks... it doesn't seem like a "happy animal" to me. And swimming with a killer whale that had actually killed before is not "love" for the job. It's pure stupidity. You look for it, you get it.
I always wondered why they called them Killer whales. Well now I know.lol. Seriously,My heart goes out to Dawn, but she knew what could happen as do all the others who do work like this. animals are animals and therefore unpredictable.Go ask Sigfried & Roy.
Holy crap, its Crocodile Dundee! Put more make-up on Jack. 47 years of putting animals in captivity, congrats Jack..what a true hero. Heaven forbid a 6 ton Orca, which is a member of of the Dolphin family, gets pissed because it can barely fit in a damn tank. Everyone gets all shell-shocked when an animal acts like an animal.
I wonder, when people are going to learn, that these animals are not pets or circusanimals but wild animals with killerinstincts, and that they do not belong in captivity
Well, that lady should have given him to a zoo. She had to give him massive doses of valium because he was acting crazy. He probably wanted to be free too. That was horrible. Poor lady. I felt bad for the owner too but she was stupid to keep him after he started acting up. You can keep chimps for a while but eventually they become wild as they get older. Her mistake was thinking of him like he was human.
They better NOT put that animal down. Nobody to blame but themselves. I agree we need to study animals & that may mean keeping them in captivity temporarily. But when do they get to go free?
@Sandypetr Just putting this out there, I do realize a whale can't be domesticated, but a Wolf shouldn't be either... a dog is the result of wolves being domesticated hundreds of years ago. The point I am trying to make is that a captive whale is very different from one born in the wild.
You haven't seen the video of men trapping these whales & selling them for 2 million. It is sad to see these whales trapped & used for science. Keep them safe here in the park. She signed her life on the line. Do not kill or release this whale. For her mistake. I am sorry for the lost of her life May God give her family peace. May she rest in peace. Saddened to hear of her death :(
Well they don't swim with him since the last incident. They use him to splash the audience is what I heard. But what's the point, right? She was standing by the edge of the tank. He jumped out of the tank and grabbed her by the ponytail and pulled her in.
I love Jack Hanna! But I think killer whales are not meant to entertain people (along with many other animals). Research, rehabilitation, and entertainment are different things, and this shouldn't be Sea World's job. I've heard many many bad things about sea world; one of them being that they catch healthy marine mammals in the wild to put in their shows.
greatestunknown you are valid proof that there is intelligent life on youtube. It is refreshing to read a stimulating comment for a change. Keep it up.
Lots of people just assume that animals are in zoos and aquariums just for money and show. They are not. Zoos around the world are working together to reduce the bottleneck in the Cheetah population. They are breeding Tigers and teaching them the skills there mother would to hopefully return them to the wild once the hunting is better controlled. There WOULD be more extinct animals in the world if it hadn't been for zoos. You have to realize the bigger picture for the existence of zoos.
Jeeze, insensitive reporter- Hanna's nearly crying remembering his dear friend and she blasts him with a cheap shot- I'm amazed he didn't just walk out. The guy's totally dedicated to animal conservation. And she (the reporter) is dedicated to ratings.
I had to come back to correct you ppl who think Tili was born in captivity. Tili was taken from it's family in the wild when only two years old, NOT born in captivity. Killer whales are instinctually family oriented animals and become stressed out when taken away from family. We know this! Also Killer Whales never attack people in the wild, only in captivity. Their fins are also not bent in the wild. That's due to being in captivity. They should not be taken from family and kept in captivity
They are working on a Cheetah survival plan. They are taking captive Cheetahs from all over the world and moving them to other zoos. They either successful breed the Cheetahs or do artificial insemination to produce cubs. This causes A wider range of genetic diversity. They can then release these animals into the wild to allow a greater genetic diversity.
Well I feel sorry for her and her family. I don't believe huge animals should be kept in captivity their whole lives. At some point they should be set free. But I believe she truly loved these animals. If you love something, set it free! If it comes back it is yours and if it doesn't it never was. It's old saying. She died doing what she loved.
Orcas aren't whales, they are dolphins... and they are smart and in the wild have several approaches to killing for a living. Of course, the animal may not have known that the woman can't hold her breath as long as it can. BTW, just releasing it may be no solution, at least for the Orca. They are social animals and the ocean's awfully big if one has no friends or family.
I would never allow my child to witness the horror of a sentient animal tucked away in a cage. I would want him to see this animal in a natural free state, not chained, his freedom taken, his instinct destroyed by the anthropocentric behavior of my human species. Never able to run free, but used by greed, and the lie of educational value. Look kids, this is the animal at its best, as he lays down wondering his fate. Watched by giggling children that are oblivious to his pain.
From the official SW Blog: Tilikum Many people are asking about the future care of Tilikum, the whale involved in the incident. We have every intention of continuing to interact with this animal, though the procedures for working with him will change. We are still reviewing this incident and will evaluate the situation and make a decision accordingly.
How often do they have access to human in the wild though? The trainers understand that these animals are dangerous but their work is important. Should this particular whale have been in the park considering it's history...I can't say. However I think it was incredibly courageous of them to take that risk to give the animal a chance at life again.
Common this "education thing" is only a loop whole in the law for SW. They are not educating, they are spreading misinformation and they are brainwashed from SW or afraid from this marine land mob.
Jack Hanna has made a career exploiting animals. He defends animals in cages, zoos, aquatic parks etc. because he makes money off of exploiting them. He is not an animal expert. He has political connections at Sea World which is why he defends Sea World.! Jack Hanna has only has Jack Hanna's interest in mind, and at the cost of animals welfare. Jack Hanna an animal advocate - ridiculous.
Whatever happened, this whale had shown to be too wild. I don't think a Iion tamer would try to teach new tricks to a lion that had killed another trainer. I think the same should apply to whales or any other wild animal. I am sorry for the family, but what I mean is that some people like to play against the odds with their lives.
I agree altho this was a big tragedy it is in no way the ORCAS fault nor the fault of the trainer. The bend in the dorsal fine has been defined as a symbol of depression. These Mamals did not ask nor volunteer to be put in captivity. we should scrap this industry and release these animals back in the wild.
I agree! People are free in this country. When people kill they get put in jail. Tili is already in jail before she ever hurt anyone, she is kept like a prisoner. So now she kills for her freedom! Don't we do that as a country? Don't we fight for OUR freedom? We do! Why should the animal kingdom be any different?
I could have respected Jack's work but he is dead wrong about this. And you cannot compare the kind of work Steve Irwin did to what SeaWorld is doing, for heaven sake. Mr. Irwin did not capture and confine huge animals in cages to train them. He went out in THEIR world, into the wild, and interacted with them. SeaWorld is fully responsible for this tragic death and blood is on their hands.
Cats are domestic animals and like living with people. I have one outside who wants me to take him in. I don't want my house to smell so I have a two cat limit. I have two cats and they use the litter pan. Anyone who's cat is pissing around the house is not taking proper care of the cat or not cleaning the kitty pan often enough. Cats are actually very clean animals and won't use the kitty pan if it is dirty, so they will find another place. I clean mine everyday so I don't have that problem.
Sorry, but you are the one who brought up the cats and the piss smell, not me. I had to set you straight. Whoever you know who's house smells with cats is just not taking proper care of them. They are probably slobs. I know some people like that too, but don't assume all cat owners houses are disgusting. I am very clean, in fact I've been told too clean. And I am very sensitive to smells. I hate bad smells.
@metridium Concur, 100%. I was rather appalled at how his response to "but Jack, it killed another trainer," was basically "Seaworld puts the safety of its animals and visitors first", i.e., the foreseeable harm to trainers posed by a homicidal orca is of tertiary status because, well, Seaworld has in vitro. He is a corporate chimp, no better than an expert witness lying on the stand to exculpate BP.
Rationalize it all you want Mr. Hanna but those animals should not be made to perform tricks for our amusement. They're intelligent, social animals and if you really want to "learn" about them do it in the wild, not in some cramped, alien tank... I've learned more about animals from PBS and the BBC than from any zoo or circus. This is no better than the chained "dancing bears" you STILL see in some places, leave animals in the wild (unless they're facing extinction, because of us no doubt).
I am a animal rights activist I am protesting sea world and Miami Seaquarium tomorrow. Orcas should be free. You know that all orcas from sea world were captures from the wild. Rip from there families. Lolita has been in jail for 40 years. Period
I do think that it's instincts would kick in and it would survive. But I don't know that for sure. That leads to new material for study. They should take a whale in captivity, tag it & watch it to see if it can survive on it's own after being born in captivity. Have they ever studied that? If they find out they can survive they could set them free at some point at least. If you put a cat or dog in the middle of the jungle, it will have a hard time surviving. You can't domesticate a whale.
@ZoeLynnDavis They are animals, all animals are meant to be kept in captivity when it is in the will of Humans. We have dominion over all creatures. How else could the average person enjoy such beautiful creatures, if not for the zoo and aquariums? Things happen sometimes. Heck, a dog breaking off it's leash can kill someone. It's just a sad fact that animals are in truth, unpredictable.
To those that disagree with Sea Worlds ethics, don't go there. Instead, go just down the road a few miles to Gatorland, sit up on the guardrails and lean in a lil too far!
And I'm not condoning training animals for performing in public- it's humiliating and degrading and I hate it in general. But unfortunately it will continue until the public doesn't want to pay big bucks for it. And they were following a safety protocol- no one was swimming with the 'dangerous' Orca- she made a mistake and put herself in harm's way- and he did the natural thing that whales do- play with their food until it stops moving.
