Jack Hanna on Disney Alligator Attack | Father Had 'No Chance' 

After listening to this and seeing the sign I think Disney should have had a WARNING - ALLIGATORS sign posted. Without a doubt. No Swimming is just not enough for most people.

i feel so sad for the family. but you have to realize this is fla ( my home) and there are alligators every where

growing up in Florida we are taught at a young age gators can be found in any body of water, they are more active at dusk and at night. also they are opportunistic hunters so if they see something small like a child or dog they will go for it. that is why your not supposed to let your children near the shore even if you are with them unless you hold them the whole time.also anywhere there is a sign no swimming is because of gators if you see a sign that says designated swimming that means it is okay to swim but even that's not guaranteed but you definitely do not swim where there is a no swimming sign because that means there are most likely gators. that's why Disney is not at fault here. my heart and prayers go out to the family of the toddler for this tragic accident.

1st of all ... lots of people who have no frame of reference are making their opinion facts about this. Disney has 47 miles of canals and several lakes which can range from a mile across and 5 - 35 feet deep. The water system at Disney is so big, they have their own water management agency, The Reedy Creek Water Authority. Disney was actually built on swampland and the park wanted to conserve much of the waterways to be used for recreation/transportation. They used to have a wave machine installed near the lagoon to make waves for surfing and swimming, which was discontinued in the early 80s. Disney closed its 'beaches' for swimming when it started to rent boats out to guests. In 40 years since Disneyworld opened, there have been NO attacks like this. In fact, since 1973 there have only been 24 fatal alligator attacks TOTAL in the whole state of Florida which has 1.3 million alligators. The odds of being involved in a fatal alligator attack in Florida are 1 in 24 million. If you applied that just to Disney, it would be astronomically low. To say this is a freak occurrence is an understatement. You have a much better chance of dying from a food allergy, bee sting, etc. than a Gator attack in Disney/Florida. This reminds me of the time Disney had to close its popular sky ride in the 1980s because one person who was unsafely climbing out of the cart's safety bars fell and died. Having said that, if you do an image search for 'Grand Floridian Lagoon', you will see that it IS set up like a beach with lounge chairs and beach chairs in the sand. It looks like any beach you would go to at a resort ... a lot of people are acting as though the parents let the boy wade in some swampy marsh next to the resort. The area in question looks like an actual beach. Yes, it has 'no swimming' signs but I think 99% of people who saw this area would have no problem with letting kids wade in the water or play near the sand before this incident. It's not like the parents were crazy to let their kid splash around on a sandy beach with expensive beach chairs all around it. I wish people would do some research before commenting on news stories or playing behind the computer screen lynch mob and making comments about poor parenting based on reading a couple paragraphs and never having seen a photo of the resort or read any of the statistics of miniscule alligator attacks.

Something not mentioned here is how just on the other side of the same lagoon, Disney opened an over the water bungalow style hotel, and guests (some of them) were throwing their food at night down to feed the alligators. Mix that with the fact that this hotel they were staying at had the area they were playing in look like it was safe to be there complete with beach style chairs and hangout areas. Yes there was a "no swimming, steep drop-off" sign but that was it. And the little boy was not swimming, he was playing in the sand. The parents being from the Midwest and at Disney, aren't going to think about alligators on their own. This was Disneys rsponsibilty to understand the potential wildlife threats and to have it like they do NOW, after what happened to this poor little boy. Now there is a fence and rocks set up so the gators and people don't mix in that area. The main reason I am saying all of this is that I would guess that the parents blame themselves and always will. But they shouldn't be. Hindsight is always 20-20, as the saying goes, but damn I do wish that Disney had not been so careless about the wildlife issue when combining these resorts and bungalows with international traveling guests from all over the world and their children. RIP Lane Graves and my deepest prayers and support to the family of Lane.

If you put a BEWARE GATORS sign in your park, people just might stay away. So you put a NO SWIMMING sign instead.

I feel so horrible for the family. honestly so horrible. I wish the no swimming sign was enough to let them know to keep their kid out of the water but they didn't know there was alligators at the time 😟.

Omg😭😭😭 just if the parents would have known there was gators in the water i know they wouldnt have let this precious child go near the water. There should have been warning signs up! Instead of the no swimming signs! No swimming means no swimming! This precious baby boy wasnt swimming😭😭😭 He was just innocently playing😭😭 This story crushes my heart because i almost lost my baby boy and the pain i felt was was so unbearable.i couldnt imagine ever losing him. God please give these parents the strength

Yes Disney is responsible. Yes they can control the alligators. Yes they are responsible for protecting the people who come. The boy wasn’t in the water he was on the beach , where there were chairs and they were allowed to be. Disney creates an atmosphere of letting your guard down and of being safe

We have Crocodiles here in Australia, and one or two people a year are taken, But we put up signs to warn folks of the dangers, seems to me Disney should have had signs up to warn people. So I hope that family gets a good lawyer, take a big chunk out of Disney and make them never be so irresponsible again...

Bullshit, regarding the signs. ALLIGATORS! BEWARE should've been posted. That kid was right by the shore and not swimming. If the parents SAW AN ALLIGATOR SIGN they wouldn't have been NEAR that lagoon. Disney is reasonable for this boys tragic death. I know I never dreamed that their man made lakes were connected to waterways. People assume they're safe playing on a beach where Disney provides chairs and sand buckets and nightly movies. Come on. They didn't post ALLIGATOR warnings because it would hurt BUSINESS if they did at that overpriced resort!

Disney is at fault for not ensuring the safety of their visitors. End of story. Disney was well ready to charge them for the visit to their family resort, they better be ready to pay up for their negligence.

Disney is liable... Sadly, Carelessness from both sides are the end result. The real victims are the child and alligator. Facts: They were at a family park were they should have separated the wild life from the humans. The park gives a lot of its visitors a false sense of security. A two year old is never 100# safe in the hands of some adults, that's just life. I could be going on and on and most would get mad at what I say but that's because they probably don't think that far ahead, like I do and the park certainly didn't.. Rip little one, you didn't stand a chance...

This was a terrible act of negligence on the part of Disney. They’re Neighbors in hospitality biz posted warning signs about alligators and poisonous cottonmouth snakes decades before this avoidable tragedy. Poor Dad did in fact have no chance by himself in saving his Son. I grew up on a lake in Florida. This avoidable tragedy caused by Disney’s fanaticism in placing their theming concerns over basic Public Safety, and the subsequent media cover up by Disney, should be a hallmark of Bob Iger’s legacy along with his turning a blind eye to genocide in China.

I live on a large natural lake in NC. We are on what I understand the northernmost boundary of alligators range. Around this lake are canals dug when roads were built to build up the roadbed and drain off water from same. There s a large population of alligators that live here and it is not unusual at all to see them swiming and sunning in the lake but they prefer the quieter canals around the lake with less boat traffic. Years ago before we knew better it was common practice to throw bread or anything edible to the gators but since, laws and signs have been in place to stop this practice. Luckily to my knowledge we ve never had a problem between people and our gators. I ve always liked seeing them and knowing we have them. I ve had some scary moments with my dogs and I ve heard of a couple occasions when someone had a dog attacked and taken and while that isn t a good thing, the gators are just being gators. A few occasionally leave and have populated the swamps and creeks we have plenty of and that has caused roadkills and inevitably one will find itself in someones yard and either gets removed by wildlife officials or I ve heard turned into gator sandwiches. I hope we always have a symbol like them that some wildness is left and hope we continue to get along and have no problems with them.

Why is the parent allowing the child to swim in a No Swimming Zone? The sign says swimming. That should be a warning that it is not safe to be in the water,especially allowing your 2 year old to swim

If you know there are gators on the swap. Why wouldn't Disney put a sign. No swimming means water is shallow don't swim . you may hurt. It doesn't mean you can't go in the water and play on there.. A kid has died because of the mistake done by Disney. A warning sign saying gator in water be cautious would have been alerted anyone not to go in the water.The kid can't read but the parents can. This is so sad. My prayers are with the family.

I feel terrible about this but no swimming means don’t go in water aswell u are in Florida any big body of water will most likely have a gator or more in it. People say it’s man made but forget it’s connected to a canal to the woodsy water.

I get sick thinking the child was alive before it was dismembered by the alligator and or drown. Horrific way for a child to go. That family is lucky to still have other children. I have just one child. If I lost my child and was no longer a parent, I’d end my life because he is my life.

I would like to hear the reaction of the Forida's Gater-Boys... They are all for the conservation of gaters. The volunteer for nucince calls for the FDW. Just want to hear from someone who kinda speaks for the gater. But all on all.... My GOD! That poor poor family. My heart goes out to them. They will be in my prayers.

Sad and horrific. Disney, with all of its ability and technology, should simply remove all alligators from its properties. If they can have hundreds of people changing light bulbs, they can afford ten to monitor and remove the gators.

This total fluff piece is disgusting and an insult to this family that has lost their child. The reporter even STATES at the beginning that Disney owns ABC, as if to say "Be careful who you condemn here, Hanna!" Just disgusting. As a FL native I know for 100% FACT that Disney has been aware of gators on their land since before they even bought it 40+ years ago. They CHOSE to quietly try to control the gators, even obtaining an OPEN PERMIT, which most other people don't get!, to catch and exterminate the gators on Disney's land! ALL OVER FLORIDA there are signs warning people that the area is a natural wildlife habitat with a pic of gators, and to not feed them or not go near the water. The kid was NOT swimming, and a NO SWIMMING sign is NOT any kind of sufficient warning about killer animals that can go onto the land! Disney had a DUTY to their guests to give them REAL warnings, not fluff No Swimming signs. They are 100% NEGLIGENT, and it's sad that you can't even trust tool ABC!
