One of my Teachers once said "being apolitical is a political stance". That phrase opened my eyes. Every decision, opinion, action involves some degree of politics.
@adapienkowska2605

It either means you are unable to take a stand for some reason, or you stand on the current status quo.
@nicholasnguyen9780
@nicholasnguyen9780 2 года назад
@@adapienkowska2605 And you're probably undecided on the vast majority of topics cuz politics is only one of many. And if you have an opinion on everything that means you have very shallow, uninformed opinions cuz it takes a lot of time to be well educated on any given important issue. And "taking a stand" isn't just having a political opinion and letting everyone know about it. 99 percent of people who say this aren't even making a difference in their own cause, they're just virtue signaling.

I'd love to see a stand-alone video about the self-made expert: what, if any, merit does it have in our current information climate which breeds misinformation, and encourages disingenuous misinterpretations for profit? To use your example of the documentary seaspiracy, the production of the emotionally compelling narrative from a self-made expert has been roundly criticized for being disengaged completely from the community created by marine biologists, marine conservation NGOs, as well as labourers working in the fisheries industry. I think the critiques of the doc really highlight an integral part of knowledge seeking that we forget; information is grounded in histories of people and power, and to become an expert in a niche requires a sustained relationship with the communities that hold knowledge not just an internet connection.

Why are they called self-made experts? How is that different to just science journalism which has been around forever? I don't think you need to be a scientist to be a science journalist. He doesn't contribute to science as a scientist but rather he gathers the science through investigative journalist techniques and shares it to a wider audience.

I remember when a professor told us that neutrality kills. Whenever someone says they are apolitical I keep remembering this phrase "neutrality kills", because it does. When you don't want to take a side, or when you are not interested in politics, that menas you are okay with the hegemony, that means you are okay with the system as it is. A system that's racist, misogynistic, classist, and overall has a huge power imbalance. This imbalances tend to not be a problem when you are on the beneficial side of things, when you are privileged enough to not care about how capitalism kills and exploits...
@kristiannapotsari2343
@kristiannapotsari2343 2 года назад
it is true but also it is logical. we might did the same on their side.. we should keep that in mind, when attacking, judging and shaming apolitical people, that we might as well have done the same in the shoes. it helps to find the rihgt way to communicate with them and actually make them see what is going on in the world
@jaya9298
@jaya9298 2 года назад
Interesting, but also consider this: a lot of us under this system don't have the time to either care or pick a side. If i have to put food on the table somehow, at the end of the day I'm probably not going to care if the corporation i work for exploits underage children in third world countries. When I have to pay the electricity bill, when I'm hardpressed to pay for my sick child's hospital bills because my insurance won't cover it, I will not have the time to care about the exploitation of the system, because I have to play into it in order to survive. I feel like the reason why a lot of people in the world are kept just on the cusp of survival but allowed to toe the line once in a while is to keep maintaing that subservience to the system, that hey, look, i know you're working but if you kept working harder you could have this.
@nicholasnguyen9780
@nicholasnguyen9780 2 года назад
But the majority of minorities are apolitical as well, what do you say to them? And the "neutrality kills" phrase applies to everything in the world. You not contributing to the next scientific breakthrough in cancer research is one less person helping to find a cure for cancer. But to even have anything remotely enlightening to say on cancer research you need to spend a lot of time studying that topic. And who's to say any of the political issues in the world are any less complex? To make a difference in any given issue, you will have to give zero attention to many others and become "neutral" towards them. There are so many important things to care about in the world and politics is only one of them. The people who pressure others into not being apolitical don't seem to realize that and assume that politics is the one topic of all topics that everyone needs to have an opinion on. And worse than that, they seem to think that simply having political opinions and posting them on social media is somehow being more helpful than those who are apolitical. Simply having the same political sentiments that millions of others have doesn't help anyone.

Being apolitical doesn't necessarily mean that agree with today's society. Always having to take sides is what brought society in to the state it is today. The world is not cutthroat black and white. And today's politics doesn't want to understand that. It's hard to make a decision when you have everybody trying to convince you why their side or their opinions are better than the opposition. And to say that you have to be priveleged to be apolitical is very tone-deaf. When you live in a country where there is constant war, starvation, first world countries milking the hell out of the resources and workers; do you really think that there first worry is going to be picking a political side or surviving??

As someone going for a PhD in physics and and has spent the past 10 years of my life seriously studying the subject day in day out I have a bit of hesitation with the concept of "self-made scientist". I do believe there is a degree of knowledge that someone, that doesn't traditionally study a subject, can gain. I actually don't even believe that institutions are necessary distinctions between someone that is an expert in a field and not, as in you can become an expert in a field by doing your own research. Yet the amount of research that is required to become an expert is usually much larger than most people that go a nontraditional route think. I believe i know what you are saying with self-made scientist but i think there should be more of a distinction between someone that devoted a year of research to climate change and wrote a well thought out documentary on it and an actual climate scientist who spent 10+ years studying the topic. Also the reason why the scientific community is generally so valuable is because of its peer review process. This has its own flaws but surely is much better than someone that has no true credentials making something that could be riddled with bias and falsehoods. In a post truth era I fear the use of valuable sources have been becoming less and less valuable and anything not coming from the horses mouth gives me significant hesitation.

@kaankanca4634

@The Rude Archive Because false science that looks like good science can damage society immensely. Case example: A preliminary finding on a UK study found that there may be a correlation between MMR vaccines and autism. Key word here is "preliminary". This means the study was not complete and (ultimately) had not gone through a peer review process. But the media picked it up and it spread like wildfire, leading to massive public outrage and decades of anti-vaccine rhetoric. When the study was finished and peer reviewed, the findings were heavily criticized and the paper was not published. But still, the "scientist" who wrote the preliminary result article has made a career for himself being the "expert" voice of the anti-vaccine movement. TLDR: Bad science is dangerous, because media.

@@kaankanca4634 false science done by a supposed doctor nonetheless @Denglish5 honestly, you can debate who "gets" to be a scientist to the end of time, but that's what you'll get. some people get that title, and some don't, but when you break down what is it that makes an expert an expert, there's a lot more to "i spent X amount of years in school to become XYZ" good science can be done by non experts just as bad science can be done by experts. there is definite truth to experience begetting expertise (and presumably good science), but it is not the only factor, nor i think it should be the (only) prerequisite. re: peer review and bias, peer review doesn't presume that there is no bias in someone's work. it's easier to see that perhaps in physics, chemistry, but definitely not when it comes to science that involve people, and definitely not climate science. here is my credential if it helps bolster my argument: i have a Master in environmental chemistry

Jack was and is very inspiring to me. He picked a side, which is something so many RU-vidrs and public figures are afraid to do. Saying out right that you have a " belief" in something or someone instead of playing on the fence for views, followers or brand deals is incredibly necessary in these times. Also, You don't need a university's stamp of approval to gain knowledge, you need passion and curiosity.

So what does it mean to act more radically ? Except for talking about how much of a problem capitalism is I mean. Who is actually ready to give up what it would take to switch from capitalism to a more sustainable way of life ? I don't think anybody really realises the cost of actual ecology. It would take a dictatorial government that would be hated ferociously to do what's necessary for humanity to keep on living in some sort of sustainability. And I don't really see how Jack Harries is supposed to act differently without the money he gets to have a voice. I admire the beauty of your heart and intelligence but I'm a little perplexe about how to put the ideas you tackle so elegantly into actions.

Exactly, is fair that Jack has a limit about how political he can or want to be. He knows that he has a presence on media and has to preserve it if he wants to keep speaking about whats important; with that, he also know it will take him a lot more effort than in comparison with an activists who is more aggressive with the message it should be shared. Many say bad news spread fast but I think good news spread faster, by Jack planting a seed of awareness and a little knowledge to his many millions of followers around all his social media is better than a convocation for some protests that eventually ends on riots which sometimes also becomes a huge mess and the real message is lost and turned by the media with a title of Conspiracy Theorists are arrested blah, blah, blah.

People pretending they don't care about politics is really frustrating. Literally no one 'doesn't care about politics.' Everyone wants the continuation or alteration of some aspect of human society - very strongly. Usually that claim is because they very strongly want the continuation of something and want to distance themselves from 'political' people - i.e., those who want something to change. Being on team stay-the-same is very much a political position.

I think a video on the self-made expert would be very interesting, I would love to hear your perspectives on it! For me, an influencer like Jack Harries or Ali Tabrizi from Seaspiracy have surely done a lot of research, and can convey their research in compelling ways. But they are both telling stories on huge issues, which branches into many different fields of scientific expertise, meaning that they might be considered generalists rather than experts, just like most other activists with a smaller platform, who don't claim to have all the answers but still are aware that the climate crisis is worth fighting against. When talking about the self made expert, it could be related to the "lay expert", which allows for a more intersectional approach. There is a lot on non-scientific expertise in the world (Michel Callon you might know has been dealing a lot with this, although intersectionality is not a focus), and the real "self-made experts" could be the people like Sonia Guajajara that you mention - I don't know her well, but I assume that she has spent most her life living in and learning about the Amazon, and that she is an expert who can clearly see the changes and dangers coming, in ways that are different than how a geographer or biologist would be able to. That was a long comment, but thank you for making this video and starting the reflections :)

How are you supposed to be apolitical when dealing with (well, anything in general, really) the climate and the human induced changes that harm all beings including humans (especially underprivileged people)?! I’m curious how the self made expert compares to a science communicator? Are they synonymous? Science communication is SO important these days, but it shouldn’t be tied up with RU-vid or a bank. Frustrates me to see privileged pretty white influencers receiving all the credit when so many people at the grassroots level, in academia and in non profits are working their butts off to do the important work for not enough money.
@kaankanca4634
@kaankanca4634 2 года назад
I don't think they are synonymous. But someone can be a self-made expert and a science communicator. There are scientific databases out there that are completely free for anyone to use. It depends on the topic you are interested in. Medicine would be easier since PubMed is free for all. But other databases that contain articles from biology, chemistry, psychology, etc. (think Elsevier, Scopus, PscyInfo) are quite expensive for someone who does it as a hobby. So there are no self-made experts who are also science communicators that I've seen so far that did not have an academic background. Usually they are grad students or higher-level undergrads. I agree about the pay. I'd probably make more working for McD than as a master's student.

@@AliceCappelle I can't find anything about it on the spot but climate activist instagram went crazy at the time. Yeah, he’s a bit thick sometimes. He references carbon offsetting as a means to justify his unnecessary and covid guideline breaking travel, without realising carbon offsets are bs. He’s such a corporate and performative environmentalist.

I think is fair that Jack has a limit about how political he can or want to be.

Do you consider yourself a self-made expert? No shade. I’m new to your channel and just curious on how you want to be perceived on this platform, since you’re doing these very interesting critiques/discussions on social/political topics. I’ve produced educational content for PBS in the past and while doing that people started considering me an expert a lot on AA history/culture. I kept having to remind people that all the research was led by a PHD in AA studies who consulted the show and then I, as the producer, took the information given to me and made it “digestible.”

Wow so glad you did a video on this! I have been seeing this ad all over the underground in London and it really caught my eye. Something about the whole image doesn't sit right with me. In some ways he is uplifting the voices of other people but it still gives me white saviour energy because the image of him is the biggest in the poster and he is "oh so kindly offering others a seat". I'm sure the idea is genuine but I don't know... It still feels like he's still the one who looks like the hero and therefore benefiting the most in this rather than the voices of those he is meant to be uplifting.

I agree about making a pro/con video on "self-made" "scientists". If the only way for most people to learn about these topics is second hand it will be easy for them to be lead astray if all of the info they get is second hand. Pretty faces with charismatic personalities can be more "addictive" than reading and listening to first hand sources. I've seen this with the pandemic where people panic because their favorite presented has said something that scares them whereas the consensus of true experts are not panicking [or whatever the proper response is from that consensus-- some think you should be scared to a certain extent about certain issues, so it is not all about feeling at peace or being cool about it].

A great contrast would be the RU-vidd Shelbizleee as she has a degree in the field of environmental conservation and she often has very well researched videos about sustainability. She also isn’t afraid to change her mind or views based on better information she learns. I would like to hear about what you think is the alternative to capitalism. It is not that I am a pro-capitalist society, but I come from an ex-communist country (it would be more accurate to say ex-socialist, but most of the world does not acknowledge the difference). There should be a way forward, but I think that we should create it beyond highly-adaptive capitalism and a 150-year-old Marx's theory. I don't have a solution, but a debate is hard to have since most people are on either side of these old ideas/systems.
@user-xj4yv3qo3v
@user-xj4yv3qo3v 2 года назад
Which country is that, idk of any ex-socialist, only of some ex-communist Stasi-regime countries. Democratic socialism, including universal basic income is the solution. Which could be seen as regulated capitalism with zero corruption, so any influence by big industries is made illegal and regulated out. The lobbyism/corruption of industries in politics is undermining proper democracy. Definitions: Communism gives all power to a communist regime, like a dictatorship and anti-democracy who of course abuse their complete power. Look at China - the coal industry there and the many "disappearing" regime critical journalists, political prisoners high numbers of executions, etc.. 2nd Definition: Democratic socialism: All power to the little people. I never get why so many are so horribly shallow and don't look up basic definitions and just parrot to be pretend leftie shills for communism just to virtue signal and to appear woke and progressive while they advocate for anti-democratic, anti-human rights concepts out of ignorance. These are just names, words anyways, it's about justice as a priority. Democratic Socialism is what brings the most justice. So I totally agree, it makes no sense to cling to old sayings of Marx due to some daddy issues, instead of simply analytical, factial looking what exactly brings the most justice, in the fastest way and in the long-run, now and here worldwide. No problem with old, lengthy written books, but it's not necessary to use it as a bible, except for people who have no sense for justice due to lacking basic human traits like empathy and analytical thinking. But those people will never achieve anything but being destructive and time wasters anyways, no matter what they read.

I think there is a big danger in self made experts for us - the viewrs, content consumers etc. As you said yourself - LUCKILY these guys (Ali and Jack) are using verified sources, basing their knowledge on the peer-reviewed material. But frankly, unless they state exact bibliography of what their knowledge is based on, and as long as we ourselves have some expertise in that topic - there is no guarantee we can trust them. Even with their best intentions, maneuvering around lies and half truths in the internet is much harder to not have msconceptions or misunderstandings on the matter than when being some "real life experts", scientists who spent years in highly controlled, peer reviewed community. I feel like you can be an expert, even self made on some topic, but you cannot be an expert from everything - even given the underground farms example (tho i myself am no expert, but as a visualisation) - you hear about this being made on small scale and promote it as a solution, but can you stand behind it without knowledge about required planting conditions, what kind of plants could grow there, how to count space and energy use, how to count the actual impact of it, is it a socially beneficial solution, possible fertilizers or other chemicals needed to use, etc etc etc..... What i mean to say - with such complex ideas you can only repeat what you read or heard, but you can never be an expert of all the sides of such a plan. And i feel like many self-made experts rely only on the books/articles they KNEW and CHOSE to read and themselves - and you need a community of different experts to interact to be able to properly judge and propose truly beneficial soultions.
@user-xj4yv3qo3v
@user-xj4yv3qo3v 2 года назад
It's very obvious that underground farms are bollocks and no solutions. People who don't get that right away don't have enough brain capacity to get basic facts, no matter how much they read to cherry pick for the limited concepts their low brain capacity can grasp. Sadly these are the most extroverted big mouths who talk, talk, talk but all they really achieve is ruin their brains with being potheads in their youth and rott it more with beer once grown up which never stops their Dunning-Kruger effect induced grandiosity.

@@user-xj4yv3qo3v not really the point of my comment but thanks for the input 😬😅 i do not have enough knowledge to say if they are even good as a side thing, like a type of community garden or is it just a let's say "PR" thing. However promoting it as the future of city agriculture, food source or frankly anything more than a interesting anecdote seems very misguided.
