In this series we're going to be tackling a subject I've wanted to get to for a long while - Jack Kirby. In this finale to the Kirby series we look at Kirby's mysterious return to DC for the Superpowers comic books and talk a little bit about how that all came to pass as well as dive deep into the reasoning behind Kirby FINALLY being allowed to finish this Fourth World material during this period as well!

I would like to see a video on Jack Kirby's romance comics. They Don't get talked about as much as it should IMO.

Fun fact -- the work that's generally considered the first example of "Pop Art" -- that being Richard Hamilton's 1956 _Just What Is It That Makes Today's Home So Different, So Appealing?_ -- includes the cover of Young Romance issue 26 from 1950, with artwork by Simon and Kirby.

They were a bit stiff, perhaps because he was drawing them so fast, but they are definitely very mannikin looking, not at all like his later more fluid art.

Same here. I think a lot of people have a difficult time separating his more action oriented comic book work and these romance books but they are absolutely killer in my opinion. I've been looking for some good sources on info for that period but even though they sold like hot cakes doesn't seem like many people asked him about that stuff when they could ask about Marvel etc. Trust me, once I get some sweet info on all those romance books though I'm on that one like white on rice!
@JerkComic
@JerkComic 6 месяцев назад
His work was always fluid when he wanted it to be in my opinion, I think he was actually shooting for a different kind of style with a lot of that Romance work. I could totally be off there but I think he didn't want to tamper with anatomy nearly as much and ended up inventing a different approach for himself that he would sometimes employ later on with oddball books as well. Agree, they're great stuff regardless for sure though

Definitely MORE KIRBY! Jack has more than earned the attention he deserves! I first came across the KING with Avengers 11 and later the Hanna Barbera Fantastic 4 series and reading the comics from 1968 forward! New Gods was very ambitious and cut short just as the books were gearing up! New Gods 7 and Mr.Miracle 9 proves that out! Superman /Jimmy Olsen became more dynamic richer characters from the 70’s forward! John Byrne and Jerry Ordway & others definitely using that advantage! Jack is/was a Gatling gun of concepts and ideas and in my opinion is putting it mildly he and his wife/family deserves to be compensated for the BILLIONS of dollars the 2 sleepyhead giants have made off of his hard work ethic! Keep up the great work!❤️👍🎯⚡️

The whole idea of Miracle was analogous to Kirby's escape from Marvel. Even the conflict between New Genesis and Apokalyps could be interpreted as the conflict between DC and Marvel, with Orion being another avatar for Kirby- going to war with the world he came from. Very interesting video. I was never aware that Kirby had been brought in for the toy designs. Good to know. This may be of interest to you: According to the RU-vidr, Toy Guru, Mattel was once considering doing a line of New Gods figures. Eventually they decided to create their own characters, hence we got the Masters of the Universe and their (slightly Kirby-esque) animal-based vehicles. I first heard of the Masters in a brief mention on a letters page in the Superman team-up comic, DC Comics Presents, and thought to myself, "Wow. 'Masters of the Universe.' That sounds like something Kirby would do."

His Parademon redesign that Kenner used for Super Powers was a vast improvement and it's always been a wasted opportunity that DC didn't use that redesign in the comics. Several creators who worked at DC during the Kahn years report that she understood the creators both writers and artists were important and really worked toward making sure they were well compensated. Some of those deals are a bit sketchy on the rights side -- as covered in various Watchmen videos (yours included if I remember correctly) but those deals still pay very well to those creators from the Kahn era. Well very well for comics. And they pay better than current comics contracts pay. Great video as usual. YT stopped showing me your updates on my front page. I found this and the last two Kirby videos (and everything in between) earlier and am catching up now to help you get those views up.

This one was amazing Jerk! Wonderful work as always! Really amazing deep dive! I get infuriated with how Jack was treated by the big two. Especially since Marvel and DC are still mining his work for decades through present day. Jeanette Khan was the best thing that ever happened to DC. I wish Jack and creators of his day had pulled the move McFarlane and the rest of the original Image founders fiinaly did. Marvel and DC did not deserve the King. Proud to be a patreon...
@JerkComic

Man it means a lot to read comments like this. Thank you. I think his treatment was abhorrent at best and predatory at the worst - and I know which side of the fence I land on there. He did end up doing creator owned work with guys like Pacific in the 80s prior to Image but he was just too old by the time that Image kicked off to do much. Even Neal Adams the rock star of his day couldn't really make a go of things with Continuity. I think Image was a special storm and a product of its time, was super cool getting to talk about Kirby and the formation of Image with Jim Valentino when we did out interview a few years ago.

Bravo! I had no idea this period at DC had origins as early as 1982. Loved seeing those development sketches. By the time Super Powers actually came out in 1985 Crisis on Infinite Earths was also happening, so the continuity of characters populating Super Powers was clearly on Earth-Kenner, hah hah! I bought them even though they were wonky. It was Jack! A footnote that you probably knew but didn’t dwell on was the Return of the New Gods series and the continuation of the Mister Miracle series around 1977-78. They are both available in hardcover now. By today’s standards they are not so great on re-reading, but by 1978 standards they were pretty darned good compared to the DC line of the time. A curious artifact for the curious, except changing Orion’s costume was a bit of a crime. As YES I WOULD love to see an ep taking a deep dive on the Captain Victory, Destroyer Duck, Silver Star period and Jack’s relationships with the indies. I eagerly bought all those comics but the politics and stories behind them is a black box to me. And I love me some indie era gossip.

I personally liked the two Super Powers miniseries (the first one moreso than the second) simply for being able to see Kirby play with the DCU, but I'll be the first to admit that it wasn't his best work. I don't know if you were aware, but Kirby initially was to draw the minicomics packed into the figures, but Kenner wasn't impressed with his sequential work. I always assumed it was Keith Giffen reworking layouts Kirby did for the Steppenwolf and Dr. Fate minicomics, and he told me that it he wasn't 100% sure, but it was possible, because Kirby's art required "extensve" reworking during that era. He said he remembered touching up a lot of Kirby promo work back then, not out of spite, but out of reverence for the man. "I just couldn't let people think that was the best work he was capable of." Greg Theakston, despite stating he wasn't qualified, did the same, but as with most ghosting duties back then, we'll probably never know who drew what or who touched up what.

I'd be curious to know more about his lesser celebrated mythologies, like The Inhumans, The Eternals, The Celestials etc. All the stuff that felt like practice for what would eventually became his opus. Did you by chance get the new TwoMorrows book Old Gods & New? I've had it sitting. Looking forward to dive in after this.

First off thanks so much for checking this out and taking time to comment, means a lot and helps out the channel. And there just wasn't a ton of info about Kirby's work being done at this point - no one cared. At least media and co-worker wise. He was used up and they wanted him gone so I wanted to get to a point in his life where he wasn't tissue paper as I was starting to get majorly depressed working on this series seeing how they treated the poor guy, haha. I promise I'll get back to some more Kirby as I do want to talk about his indie work and romance books especially, some seriously overlooked stuff there imho. And no sadly I haven't had a chance to check that out. I usually really like TwoMorrows, tons of amazing releases that I've used as sources over the years but I'm on a pretty limited income and I haven't been able to swing it since I'm not "researching" Kirby right now and have to concentrate those spending dollars haha. Hopefully I get a chance to check it out though, I should get TwoMorrows to sponsor the channel so I just get copies of the books in exchange for plugging them when I use them as reference... which is a lot lmao!

When you throw in phrases such as "and stuff like that" it's a telltale sign of embellishment. Your account of Jack's driving and mental feebleness is pure rubbish. Yes, it's true Jack had to give up driving and actually did drive up on a sidewalk, but this was earlier in his life and he did not imagine he was in a rocket ship. His constant obsession with his work made it hard for him to concentrate on more mundane things like driving. So he gave up driving at Roz's insistence.

There's quotes from Gerber, Dixon, and a number of the other individuals that worked with Kirby during his time in animation that beg to differ about his driving and it's a fairly well known fact that Jack's mind was like a steal trap for years but that by his 60s it just wasn't working like that any more. He was a much more astute man than I'll ever be and I never once called Jack feeble. He was having memory problems, getting older, had horrible vision and had driven up on to curbs according to his wife and others on more than one occasion. I didn't personally attack the man or call him senile dude, don't know why it would benefit me to do so or even fit the narrative of me doing a 10 hour long doc supporting Kirby and his work...

Has anyone made a video of jack Kirby being ripped off like what George Lucas did with star wars. Of course other elements were also lifted from flash Gordon and blade runner. DC the new gods and 4th world were brand spanking new and still today are relatively unknown by the majority. Even hardcore fans like myself haven't fully grasped his work and all the details of new gods. It bugs me that star wars fans are in love with something that already existed and within DC comics is pretty great yet unacknowledged. The force was the source, Luke & Vader=Orion and Darkseid, Han Solo Mr Miracle. I was so upset when I learned this from the great John Schnepp who I miss dearly loved that man for his knowledge and love of comics. Jack Kirby wasn't able to fully build his new gods comic and DC didn't know where to go with it without him around which helped George Lucas pilfer his material unnoticed. That's what hurts me the most add the fact nobody knows this or simply dont care. Suffice to say star wars is cool n all but all things considered it makes me appreciate it less knowing this. Star Trek is far more enjoyable for me since it has more meaning and deeper emotional stories about humanity and space. But that's prolly cuz I already was in love with DC & Marvel so star wars was kinda dull to me.

I'm sure there's a video somewhere out there about it but Kirby never really pushed the subject as far as I know so not a ton of discussion. I DO hear Indiana Jones brought up a great deal in reference to the second volume of Black Panther that he was heading up leading into the production of that and I know he had feelers out to Spielberg about it wanting just a thanks or acknowledgment. As per Star Wars specifically I think there's little doubt that a lot of the elements came from comics, Kirby, pulps, anything that Lucas liked. This obviously also included stuff like Kurosawa and his jidaigeki where, if the name isn't clue enough, many of the other major story and thematic elements were lifted from. I don't necessarily think Lucas ripped it out or that he straight lifted SW and I also know Lucas for legal reasons couldn't ever admit to certain influences because of the sheer amount of money involved with the property after a certain point. Star Wars hit a nerve with a people and while it's totally cobbled together from different places I don't know if I would solely lay it at the feet of the Fourth World material. That would be interesting to look into though as admittedly, I'm most certainly not the biggest SW fan out there. Nothing wrong with it, just not engrossing and entertaining to me like it seems to be for most other people. I'm a weirdo though. My favorite Star Trek show is DS9 because of the people and culture and emotional pull that show had as a result. I still say it's the best Star Trek show ever... Thanks for checking this out btw - means a lot and helps out the channel a ton leaving a comment as well!

Admittedly Uncle Jerk I just CANNOT warm up to The Eternals even though I paid like $75 two years ago it actually saved me from having to waste money on the MCU film that the previews alone were like - this sucks ! Let me know your thoughts on his Forth World work absolute editions are relatively cheap and it seems no one warms up to them . Are they bad ? New Gods I’m neutral about it’s so so .

If you get a chance to get the Fourth World Absolutes or the Ombibus, highly recommended. The big problem is that things were kind of left on a cliffhanger with the FW but I think they did a decent enough job of tying up those loose ends years later you can read and enjoy it today. Eternals is one of those labored projects I don't think Kirby was given enough freedom on and Marvel just kind of killed with editorial interference during that second stint at the company. They simply would not leave him alone to do his thing and most books suffered dearly for it. I own several editions of the FW material and definitely recommend checking it out if you get the chance

Yes. Yes they did... er, well, some people. Kahn and Levitz get MAJOR props from me for coming back a decade later and trying to right stuff. They helped him out as best they could and I'll remember that forever. The rest of the low lives that tossed him to the wolves? Yeah, won't forget them either.

Thanks so much ! Yes I have the Kirby Eternals omnibus it’s pretty turgid I think it was overpriced but the FW absolute is very reasonable . I enjoy the New God Gary Conroy story line but it doesn’t get high purchase numbers not that It matters the hidden gems you always find are treasures ! The MCU Eternals film I could just smell the crap coming from the film same thing with Thor Love and Thunder I mean I knew it was woke garbage but this is coming from Ragnorok film which is one of the funniest tight MCU films I mean JEFF GOLDBLOOM had to be the funkiest crazy “villains” I have ever seen on film! Saw it like three times on the big screen .

I checked out on the MCU maybe Iron Man 3? Little before that? I won't pay for films that refuse to pay or otherwise remunerate people responsible for the characters and stories in the films, but that's neither here nor there. Eternals I think was more about Jack just trying to get SOMETHING out at Marvel that wasn't rehashed superhero stuff or random licensed books like they kept throwing at him. It was clear Marvel had NO clue what to do with him that second go round because they were treating him so poorly and kicking him from book to book... just so sad. But yeah, I own the FW Absolutes and can say they're definitely worth picking up especially for the highly discounted prices you can get them at even new imho.

Kirby's family shouldve sued Marvel/DC for artistic slavery. As an artist I can't support that but this 4th World was a big F you cuz NO ONE can do what he could do.
@JerkComic
@JerkComic 2 месяца назад
Well can't really sue for 'slavery' when they paid him - not much, but they paid him. As for Kirby's family suing though - they did. And they won. That's why you see Jack's name at the beginning of all the MCU stuff at this point. Well, technically Marvel settled with both the Kirby and Ditko estates, but we all know they only made agreements because they were going to loose - no way you're just going to give up even part of those IPs knowing what they're worth unless someone's got you by the short and curlies.

I have tried to watch this several times and every time I encounter more factual errors, I'm forced to stop again. Jack's 4th World series WAS NOT an abject failure. The circulation was good and probably by later standards very good. DC's problem was not the 4th World series. It was sales in general. Marvel had out maneuvered them on pricing. In the fall of 1971 everyone in the industry was going to have to hike prices again. The jump from 12 cents to 15 cents had staved off more drastic changes for a year or so but it was not enough. With the November issues of 1971, which were actually on the stands in August 1971 comics increased page count to 52 pages (counting covers) and set the price at 25 cents. Marvel did this and DC followed suit at the same time. Then Marvel pulled a fast one. They dropped back to 32 pages the very next month at a 2o cent cover price and stayed there. DC hung on to the 25 cent format for a full year before falling back to the 20 cent/36 page format and it was disastrous for their whole line. They were desperate to boost sales and wanted to utilize Kirby to more popular ends. With comics code relaxing previous rules on the horror genre there was an eagerness by both companies to exploit it. DC decided to cancel Jack's project and see if he could not turn a greater profit by doing a horror series as well as developing a knock-off of Planet of the Apes that was very hot at the time. They wanted to him to develop something more trendy. It is no more complicated than that. But New Gods was NEVER an abject failure. The 25 cent cover price was.
@JerkComic
@JerkComic Год назад
I think we're just having a case of crossed wires here. I actually talk about the price wars as well as the fact that it's believed DC exaggerated low sales to bully Kirby out of working on the Fourth World. What I mean by abject failure has nothing to do with the quality of the comic, nor the reception of the comic by the fans at the time - there were things Kirby set out to do and accomplish with the Fourth World material as well as things that DC wanted, neither party got what they wanted, the universe was canned long before it should have been and left in a sad limbo for years. DC was NOT going to let Jack pass the books off to other artists and writers, they were NOT going to set up a whole new editorial wing to oversee his stuff and they were NOT going to let him upstage them. One by one they stripped him of his titles and used the "failure" of the series as a way to leverage Kirby into doing work he was increasingly less and less pleased with. That is what I meant. I am not commenting on sales or reception, but the fact that every single thing that Kirby and DC set out to do with the series was seemingly not accomplished. Hopefully that makes better sense and sorry you don't like the piece but I appreciate you taking the time to comment and leave thoughts/insights! Really appreciate the constructive criticism.
