Carnera was a much better fighter than the jock sniffer media "experts" never seemed to grasp. They never saw past the size and assumed clumsiness. Parrots all. Carnera was very quick and light on his feet. Had very fast hands, good combinations and good power. And decent ring mastery. A much underrated fighter.

I think Carnera was an unorthodox and erratic style to figure out ...if he could pressure his opponent he would be difficult to overcome...especially with an opponent like Sharkey who stayed kin front of the Prim ! Carnera earned his respect in the ring ... no fix was in when he won the title

This fight was not fixed. Carnera a much better boxer than his critics claimed ,faster too. And Sharkey did his best to try to knock him out. Just a few seconds before the end Sharkey threw his best right hand. The uppercut that won Carnera the title had Carnera's full weight behind it.

First off, Carnera looks much more improved than their previous fight. Sharkey was becoming more flat footed of a fighter vs Schmeling II. Here he looks slower and more flat footed, against Scott a larger man 3 years earlier he isnt a flat footed fighter at all.He shouldn't been champion because he didn't win Schmeling 2, and he looks about as good as Schmeling 2 (which ended with Sharkey beat up). I think Sharkey was a very good fighter, i wish he would have fought Levinsky in 29. He coulda built a good legacy getting a few more Classic lightheavy's on his resume like Levinsky,and Otto Van porat. The lightheavy's were at their best in the late 20's, and Jack had fast feet he woulda been fun to watch fighting them in his prime in 29-31. By the time he fought Joe Louis, Sharkey is like 5 years out of his prime. I can't even hold that lose against him so much removed from your prime. Both Tunney & Greb would beat Sharkey easily, a quick counter puncher is his weakness (and they be tailor made for him). I think Sharkey's chin is excellent none of his filmed fights (other than louis) have him even going down. Dempsey he gets knocked out but it's a cheap knockout because he was talking to the referee. Chin excellent, 1933 Sharkey is out his prime.

I agree with your points on both this fight & Ali-Liston II. One thing that that did not help Primo Carnera"s legacy was the movie "The Harder They Fall" (which was Humphrey Bogart's last movie) In it was a character based on Primo Carnera & the last fight sequence in the movie had THE Max Baer (3 years from death) fighting the Carnera-character. Up until that point, "Carnera" earned his title shot on fixed fights. Ali-Liston II was the only fight Ali showed ANGER in knocking down an opponent.

From all that is written on this fight I always assumed fix. But slow it down. The way Shakey falls on his right leg he could have seriously injured himself. Not the way a man taking a dive would fall one would think. He falls like a man who is knocked out with no body control. I now say no fix.
@saintcruzin

No “fix” here. Just an older fighter being worn down by a much bigger fighter. It reminds me of how Wlad Klitschko won some fight just by leaning on, pulling down and wearing out smaller fighters. Sharkey was exhausted and KO’d....a past his prime Sharkey...

@@SuperAttitudeera, It’s more developed now? Is that why so many of our fighters look like dogshit or don’t even know how to throw every punch? When fighters are spending less and less time training to fight (boxing work outs), their boxing training regimes are not more developed. Fighters that fought more often didn’t spar as frequently, because when they were keeping active and fighting multiple times a month, there was no need. Of course getting in sparring wars and getting hit will take it’s toll on a person, but when modern boxers do spar, especially in America, they go too hard and take a lot of damage before their fight It’s honestly absurd that we consider them to be more worn out at younger ages than modern fighters. For example, Sugar Ray Robinson fought 200 fights and never sounded punch drunk in any interview all they way up until his last one in 1976. Sam Langford (yes he went blind) never sounded punch drunk in any interview either. Clear speaking from Joe Louis. It took Jake LaMotta until the 2010s for his words to start slurring. All of these “advanced training regimes” yet somehow, not only do the majority of the fighters today have less tools and tricks, but are taking more long term damage and slurring their words (sometimes before they retire!)

@The_Ex_Boxing_Nerd
@The_Ex_Boxing_Nerd 3 года назад
@@JeffPenaify, How many fighters are at the top of the sport right now over the age of 37? Longevity as an athlete goes to Archie Moore who fought from 1935-1963. He had 220 fights and reigned as light heavyweight champion for a decade from the age of 39-49 years old. Bob Fitzsimmons won the light heavyweight championship at 40 years old and had 101 fights. Jack Britton fought from 1904-1930 and had 345 fights. Joe Brown fought from 1941 to 1970 and reigned as undisputed lightweight champion from 1956-1962. From the age of 30-36. 35 years old to be a champion isn’t something new and there are only 4 fighters today over the age of 35 that hold major world titles. More belts today than there were back then and you can still count on one hand the amount of active champions in their late 30s.

Unfortunately for Primo Max Baer studied the first Sharkey fight and figured out that Primo couldn't handle relentless pressure and his power was limited at very close range! If Primo would have had better training and coaching he probably would have held the title for a while! Now Max Baer his problem was that he liked to drink and play with the women more than he liked training! If Max would have been more dedicated to the sport he definitely would have held the title for a long time! Max had all of the tools great power and he figured his opponents out as the fight went on! Another thing that killed Max's career was that when he killed a man in the ring he never could get over it! Which is why he drank so much! But I think one of the smartest fighters from that era was definitely James Braddock! Braddock didn't have the best of anything but he was smart and he had a great ring IQ which he showed in the Baer fight!

Was this fight fixed? Hard to say, but Sharkey hardly resembles the fighter who almost KO'd Carnera in 1931. Perhaps he took Carnera lightly having beaten him previously. He doesn't appear to be as in the best of shape as his previous fights on film or as aggressive. Carnera, for whatever he lacked in skill and technique as a boxer did have courage and fought with great heart even when outgunned.

He hit him with one uppercut, and then finished with another. With the angle of that uppercut it's clear Sharkey couldn't see it coming. Primo was on the left side of Sharkey and Jack was bent so far down at the waist , I don't see how he could have braced himself for the shot. Def not enough evidence here to call this a fix. The uppercut clearly lifted his head way up on its own.

@crawlFace 10 лет назад
What do you think? cause I can see Primo being trained by Emanuel Steward lol. I know what everyone means by Primo "manufactured" but I still think it was fun to have that kind of hulking fighter around so that we can see how different styles match up against the supposed "size" advantage arguments. Most could agree Sharkey has more skill and ring IQ and he knew how to stick and move for the decision against bigger powerful fighters. Sure, the best version of Sharkey usually picks apart Primo but Primo could be competitive, especially when he gets the jab going and when he can block punches. Obviously the ko threat is always present. Sharkey at his best may consistently get the decision over Carnera. Then again Sharkey also brawls and mixes it up, so definitely expect Primo to land his share of punches.
@polymath7
@polymath7 8 лет назад
+crawlFace The size advantage argument is no argument at all, since it consists simply of repeating the word "size" ad nauseam. It never gets anywhere beyond that. It also relies on both a correlation-causation fallacy and a ludicrous insufficiency of sample size. The "reasoning" of these people who say there will never be another dominant heavyweight under 220 pounds is exactly identical in logical structure to those who used to say there would never be another world class white heavyweight.
@crawlFace
@crawlFace 8 лет назад
polymath7 There is an artificial tendency being supported by the business side, where big hulking people are rushed up the ranks just because their size makes them look imposing. What we get is this age of the super-heavy with terrible boxing skills. There are a few greats, but most of these guys have poor fundamentals and poor knowledge. Some a good at brawling, others good at taking up space and time, but hardly any actual have defensive/counter skills. Hardly any can really box. I don't see much knowledge in the ring today.

Burt Sugar never climbed into the ring and exchanged punches. I did, in my youth. The crowd doesn't always feel and see what's going on. Primo was no bum. He was a big, well-toned muscled fighter and if you watch his footwork he seldom backs up even when hit. He often throws a pretty good jab too. He had more courage and pride than most fighters. Joe Louis admitted in an interview that Primo's punches were devastating & they hurt wherever they landed. If Primo was a bum why did he take so much punishment at times and remain standing? He could've thrown in the towel or taken a dive? Which would've looked obvious since he was no actor. He didn't. The mob connections were solely monetary. They put up purses and helped with the betting line. They didn't interfere with the fight because even the mob knew that would be bad publicity. Let's face it -- Primo lost to Baer & Louis and several other fighters of no name recognition. If he was a fixed fighter those no names would've been paid off. Primo has the highest heavyweight KO record (71) in the sport & 2nd win record with (88). Many boxers were ranked, so he didn't KO bums. No bum would get in the ring with a monster like Primo. Ezzard Charles has the most wins at 95.

Fixed fight. Jack Sharkey was a mob managed fighter, as was Carnera. Notice Sharkey rarely throws his right.- his best KO punch. He landed it early and shook Carnera and thereafter made sure he missed or landed on Primo's shoulders for fear of knocking him out by accident. He actually could have toyed with Primo and knocked him out but knew he had to throw the fight. So..he made sure it looked good by feigning unconsciousness. Big Primo was strong but his punches lacked knockout power. The mob guys cleaned up on this fight as Sharkey was the favorite to win.

His quotes: "I didn't think much of Carnera as a fighter. He had enough beef packed on his bones but his head was weightless and empty." "I underestimated Carnera considerably, but I was in great condition for our championship fight." He also said neither he or his management team were in league with gangsters. Sharkey did admit he was troubled with the controversies that erupted during his career (bouts with Harry Will, Jack Dempsey and Max Schmeling) that affected his thoughts on his boxing career. The fact that, in those days, bouts had to last longer than five rounds in order for the fighters to receive twice as much money for the fight film led to A LOT of fighters "carrying" foes into the sixth. I think that is in play here. Some guys, like Sharkey, just couldn't make carrying an opponent "look good" and that may have given folks the impression that he threw the fight. Sharkey gave Primo far too many punching opportunities and it just may have cost him the title.
