The Jackery Explorer 500 and 100 watt solar panel has been a great addition to my Overland setup. The power I get out of the Explorer 500 allows me to get a full work day in on the laptop and the 100 Watt solar has really impressed me on how quickly it can recoup my Explorer 500 and my Explorer 240.

We've been using the 290 w/ the 100w panel and have been pretty happy with it so far. Works great for charging our phones and camera gear while out on adventures and lets us do some light editing in the field. We plan on doing a hard-wired setup for our rig eventually, but I think I might upgrade to the 500 in the meantime.

I’m looking to get a Dometic 40 fridge for food and was wondering if the Jackery 500 would be big enough for a fridge and charging phones and what not. Jason, have you had any issue with the solar panel getting wet and then not working? Product description says not waterproof, but these things are meant to be outside so there is always a chance it will get rained or snowed on.
@pda4you
@pda4you 4 года назад
So - just a small correction. Laptops are DC devices. You don't plug them into AC. You plug the brick into AC and it converts to the 12-18 (usually) volts DC power for the laptop power and charging. Power bricks don't give a rip about modified sine wave or pure sine wave. Some AC powered equipment (like newer TV's) do care. So no question pure sine is best. But your laptop brick doesn't give a rip. What is wise is not converting the Jackery DC battery to AC then to have the brick convert that right back to DC power. You are best to get a 12v power supply for your laptop - it will then up the volts to 18 or so (usual) power. Much more efficient with far less DC to AC to DC conversion losses.
@PrimalOutdoors
@PrimalOutdoors 4 года назад
Technically you are correct about laptops being DC, but since they plug into AC most are not going to know that so for the purpose of this video I didn't see it necessary to get too technical. What you say maybe true about laptops and modified sine wave but I will choose to error on the side of caution and always go pure sine wave.
@prepperjonpnw6482
@prepperjonpnw6482 4 года назад
As for charging a laptop when not using it the sine wave doesn’t matter. It matters if you have it plugged in while using it. You might not notice any problem at first but you will probably see it when you play back any video or audio. You will get a persistent “buzz” or “hum” sound that is seriously annoying lol
@pda4you
@pda4you 4 года назад
@@prepperjonpnw6482 Even when they are on - laptops are DC devices. The charging on them is all DC as well. Trust me that brick converts power to DC - the laptop has NO IDEA the AC isn't as clean. I have never heard a buzz or hum sound - other than that originating from a cellular device being too close.
@pda4you
@pda4you 4 года назад
@@PrimalOutdoors I totally get it - but so many say "your laptops need pure sine" and that is simply not accurate. Some of the AC grid power isn't that clean and most AC devices are built for that tolerance. I agree pure sine is better and in the case of a laptop the best is DC to DC. But those power bricks are kinda pricey. Everything is a trade-off. .

Hi, if I wanted to use the jackery 500 with 100w solar panel with an airfryer, electric pressure cooker, blender, food processor, and electric stove? If so, what wastage do these appliances need to be? I intend on using a mix of these appliances about 3-4x a week.
@MikeAndNary
@MikeAndNary 4 года назад
The jackery 500 may be a "game changer" but the over priced panels are not. I built my own (video on my channel) because not only is it cheaper but if something breaks I can fix/replace the component instead of shipping the generator back for warranty work and be out of the entire system.

I have been following you for a couple years and my wife and I are trying to get out and travel for a couple years before settling down again. We have a Costway 70qt fridge that I need to power while driving and overnight when we camp for the night. I think the 500 may have all the power I need to keep the fridge running for 12-14 hours when we aren't driving. But the feedback I am getting on FB says that the DC output needs to be regulated to 12V. Some, like the one I have now say 9-12V. A fridge won't run if it drops under 12V. Do you know if its regulated to 12V and will stay there as the battery discharges? Also, somebody told me they could plug their car cig. lighter into the Jackery 500 and the fridge into the Jackery and it will charge and run the fridge as I drive. Is that possible with the Jackery? Thanks for all you do on your channel. I know it's work and hopefully you will thrive doing what you like and love!

They are close in terms of quality. Goal Zero was first to the game and has higher wattage models than Jackery. I have both. I like the design of the jackery with it's easy to grab handle. For more power look at Goal Zero. Top quality and they have a 1000, 1400 and 3000 watt batteries. Jackery is working on a 1500 watt and will be out soon.
@prepperjonpnw6482
@prepperjonpnw6482 4 года назад
Careful with Goal Zero their cost is ridiculous. And as with any of these units you might consider creating your own system. Look for a channel I think it’s called DIY solar with Will Prowse IV. He walks you through everything you could ever want to know about solar and batteries. If you think about it just how portable do you need your system to be. I went to his website and he has diagrams with parts lists to build every level of system possible. Between his book and his videos/website I built an awesome system for my travel trailer and another for my truck and neither cost me more than $1,000. That’s with a 100ah Lithium battery for each system and pure sine wave inverters. Cheers mate and happy trails

The larger “generator” unit it had worked for about a week but then wouldn’t turn off. Solar panel plastic cracked. Second unit wouldn’t charge. I want to like them as they are “pretty” little units but they just don’t hold up. The Inergy is rock solid but costs a lot more. To be fair I’m testing out the new Anker generator and after this weekend camping it has a cracked screen and percentage jumps all over the place. Waiting on a replacement.
