Goal Zero had its day. One of the first mass produced power stations. It was cutting edge for a while. Nowadays, the competition has caught up and surpassed it. Plus, it always has been way overpriced.
Jackery isn't anywhere near good as Goal Zero. Their charging performance and cooling. Plus Jackery has limiters if anything less then % of wattage. Goalzero doesn't. Plus this guy's test is bullcrap. Testing a Fridge doesn't exactly say corrective running, Because compressors in them turn off for a moment, Then turn on. And since his video 'skips' or as they say for video editing. 'passes time' Without a speed up video. We never know what he did with using the fridge. Leaving it open, to try to make more active power be used while using the goal zero and less on the jackery just to make it seem like the jackery is better, Even though Both have exactly same battery cells. Plus, This is a hybrid product of jackery, By Honda. Their older devices of their older modules weren't even their own, They bought them and resold. Compared to Goal zero that's been building and making their own units since their Lead acid days. Reliablitlity is more on goal zeros side in all cases.

At the end of the day what do we want them for? Power for all of our needs. Goal zero I think at the halfway mark was down to 17% and jackery still at 66%. If I’m correct that is. For $700 I expect a lot more from a unit. Jackery will be my choice. Thanks for the review. Cheers from Canader eh!

I personally think the Goal Zero would be better in certain situations. If for example you are frequently traveling on an overland trip and not staying at a single camp site then the Goal Zero would charge to full power while you travel and run all night at your camp site. On the other hand, I suppose if you plan on staying at the same site for days at a time the Jackery may be the option. I do believe a solar charge test would be very useful in the comparison though as many people staying longer durations tend to use solar to keep their batteries topped off, and depending on solar re-charge times, could make all the difference in this decision. I know that if the Goal Zero recharged twice as fast on the solar like it seemingly does on car charge, it would win it for me even at the higher price.
Completely agree. And that 10 hour advantage the jackery has is quickly nullified by how fast you can charge a goal zero via car adapter. 4.5 hours is pretty damn nuts.
I’ve experienced times when the “dual battery” car charger and solar failed to charge my goal zero while on the go. I’m not sure if they addressed that issue already. I have their yeti 1000
I have both and was very disappointed with the goal zero. It weighs more, depletes faster my Jackery takes 1 hour longer to get full 100% but I’d rather Wait an additional hour to have it last 1/3rd longer in certain situations. I agree the goal zero was top dog early in the tech but now many have caught up and the Jackery has definitely surpassed it. That’s not to say in the next year or so goal zero will than pass the Jackery.
@@alayla3281 Typical basic portable space heaters you use around the house are 1500 watts. A 500 watt heater (or a 1500 watt heater on low) is not going to put out a lot of heat. Some, not a lot.
I personally would buy the jackery ...the handle is actually better to not have moving parts ...more solid design and less likely to break ...love the Jackery!
Good review. I've been rocking the GZ Yeti 1k full time for about 3 years. I bought it for $1000 at Costco. I charge it via a 300w roof panel. It runs to about 50% overnight running an arb zero 47q fridge & charging cameras & phones. My laptop pulls a significant amour of power as well & will leave the GZ in the 25% range overnight when combined with the fridge. The extra GZ MPPT adapter helps return a charge via solar quickly, so it works well. But GZ cables & accesories are spendy. I have a few other GZ devices, & have found their customer service to be great, pre-covid anyway... but for the price & the run time. It looks like I may give a Jackery a shot nect time...
My GZ Yeti1000 battery just died after 5 years of very light daily use. They want $500 for me to ship it to them and replace the battery. I am looking very closely at replacing it with a Jackery 500.
@@reidshirk6553 That's a bummer man... that's a bummer. You know, I don't know, but that "lightly used" thing might detract from the long term life of the battery. Mine gets near constant use. Even when I'm not traveling I try to give it a job. It always runs something & charges move up & down. It's four years old... The GZ cust service was great in my last experience, but I took it straight to their shop in Sandy Utah. That's not an option with the ol Rona, cause they closed up tight... 🤷♂️ But yeah, I think the Jackery is worth a shot. It's cheaper & gets good reviews.
I’m old to this thread and viewed PARTS of the video to get a better idea of power consumption from the Dometic, but I wouldn’t jump the gun so fast and purchase the Jackery. I’m fact, I wouldn’t buy the Jackery at all. My first generator, power bank or whatever you call it was similar with one AC port and was great for my initial reason for purchasing. After using it, I found more reasons to use it around the house and the days of an extension cord went out the window. I began using it for TV watching on the lawn, all the way down to using the USBC ports to fast charge my iPhone. I ended up buying the GZ 500x because I wanted more power, fast changing of the unit itself, and two AC ports. While these may not seem like gamechangers yet, they make a world of difference in real world usage. Using the supplied power brick and a 40w USBC changer plugging into the PD port on the 500X, I achieve 100w of charging to the unit which charges it from 0 to 100 in less than 4hrs. Testing is great to see comparisons, but no one is buying a fridge without a plan to keep power to it before hand. Meaning charging a unit while driving or solar when stationary.
What people miss is the goal zero has built in safety that detects what is plugged into it and will not harm your devices , the technology is better then the jackery, that’s why I pick goal zero over the jackery
I really like how far Jackery tech has come. I honestly think it’s technically a better product, tech wise. I just hate the damn fixed/rigid handle . I don’t even want to store/stack anything on top of it.. just want the ability to put it in a fixed/constructed box that doesn’t need to be three inches taller. Kind of a dumb gripe, I know. But when you pack a van or Overland vehicle, every square inch counts .
Thanks for this video....another review of the Jackery 1000 shows, that it is car-charged with 88Watt per hour, what fills the battery after 11,36 hours. Cannot imagine that half the power on this device will take 2 hours longer...except they use VERY different electronics inside...
Jackery Explorer 1000 is a newer and improved model with MPPT charging. I believe there is a newer 500 model with MPPT as well. Newer models offer much faster charging times. The unit used in this review must have been the older Jackery 500.
Thanks for the great review. I went with the Yeti 500. I found a great deal on it (saved $175). The battery doesn't last as long as I would have thought. But I do like the design and the extra ports. So it was totally worth it. If I was just powering my fridge I would have gone with the Jackery, but I need a more swiss army knife approach. So the Yeti was a better choice for me.
The more of these power station videos l watch the more confused l get. Not knowing any better, in this case l would think the Goal Zero’s ability to recharge itself from a car in 1/4th the time of a Jackery would way trump the extra 20% run time of the Jackery. Or is there something l don’t get?
I get it and I totally agree with you. Of course my big fridge is Propane so I won't be needing a Power Station for that. Plus I really don't like the size and aesthetics of the "Jackery" and I really hate the color orange. I have also been told you can't replace the battery inside the Jackery if it poops out but you can in the Goal Zero. I go with Goal Zero hands down.
Just goes to show you it’s not all about looks. Knocked the Jackery because it “didn’t” look nice and it was missing ports. For a few extra bucks you can get a 110v splitter and 12v to USB C charger and still be way under the price of the GZ. If you have the skills you can have a battery, inverter, charge controller, solar panel for way under the cost of these products and it will be much better
Good to know. My Jackery 1000 Will be here on Friday. It has a USB-C and 3 AC ports.... thats why i got it vs the 500, But I will get a 500 or 240 for phones , etc
The 1000 is the best bang for the buck, especially with optional solar kit. I have several coworkers who are looking into these especially after the Texas snowstorm.
Just picked up the Jackery 550 and was happy to see your results. I plan to do some testing myself to see how it does on a CPAP but overall, with charging during the day while traveling I believe I'll get all I need from it! THANKS!

I just tested the Goal Zero 500x vs a Massimo MPS 500. I ran the same 60 watt 120v load on each. The Goal Zero lasted 6hrs 8 minutes the Massimo lasted 8hrs 27 minutes. I was expecting something much closer.
I think you have a niche here. Don't listen to the haters. I love this idea or seeing how these batteries perform while having a fridge drawing from them. What would be cool is too see the perform in different environments. No one else is doing that but everyone.... I want to know lol. Thanks!

We're planning to weekend in our minivan for a few years until the kids are out of the house and then maybe buy and build up a cargo van and my wife asks, "So which one is better, the orange or the greenish yellow one?". Pretty much all we'd be using it for is exactly a 12 volt fridge and maybe some charging.
Nice video thank you. I just got a Set Power fridge today and currently own a 1500 yeti. I'm testing it right now with one chamber at zero and one at 32 degrees. The 1500 is pretty big to lug around so I am looking to downsize to a 500 range.
What I found trying to power a fridge with two 32grp batteries, there are so many variables that affect the battery life. At the end of the day I went back to a Jackson Orion cooler that keeps my Ice for to 3-4 days.
The charge rate with the car adapter is very different between the two. The goal zero will charge from 0-100% in ~4.5 hours, while the jacket 500 will take 14+ hours!. You can improve it by using a 12v inverter, but it adds to the cost and having to Cary around yet another device.
I’ve never used one of them but in my semi trucks I use an inverter at half that price. Why not use a deep cycle battery and an inverter? I run fridge and microwave without issues. Them boxes obviously would be an easier install. Thanks
If you’re on the move the whole time you don’t need one. But If you set up a camp for a few days and have a fridge and other things to power these are super handy.
This stems from an issue where the Yeti 500x battery was not giving the correct runtime output as advertised. There was another reviewer who ran into a similar issue, where the 500X would report as dead and stop working but it actually wasn't. He RMA'd it, got another unit, same issue. Apparently the problem was then fixed by Goal Zero down the road.

You should all read the customer service dumpster fire reviews from jackery. The company, as well as their customer service is based in China. While the goal zero is Chinese made, the company is based in Utah I believe.
Actually, this particular Jackery power station normally runs at $2,498 but it is sold at a discount for $1,899. The GoalZero Yeti 500x runs at $549.95 but it is on sale for $499.95. The Jackery lasts longer. That's probably why it is priced at $2,498. The prices are from today, October 15, 2023.
I don't understand why Jackery has that design. The Jackery in Japan has a flat top!! So what's up with that? There's a lot more to the power stations than just output. A good power source (solar generator) allows many years of service and recharge, the ability to charge quickly with a real MPPT, the ability to pass through charge, etc. etc. A very good alternative (in my opinion the best option) to both is the MaxOak Bluetti AC50S. Comes with way more features such as wireless charging on the top. And only $430. Jackery better up their game to stay competitive and GoalZero is for people that shop at REI and don't know any better ;-)
Jackery hasn't built their units. Their made by Honda. Jackery has never made their own units, They have always relied off others or aka resellers. Where they would buy other prebuilts, stamp their logo, and resell it to you. So the US and China ones are different because their from two different makers. Aka suppliers. Goal Zero builds their own.
Be careful if your fridge has a defrost cycle. My fridge pulls 10 watts with compressor off and 100 watts with compressor on. BUT, when defrost cycle kicked on, which is silent, it pulled 350 watts which will quickly run down any battery bank.
Thanks to this. For me, the goal zero wins for several reasons: smaller and flat top, quick charge time and c ports. I don't plan a fridge, being vegan. Want to use my instant pot, microwave, electric teakettle, electric blanket. How much wattage would be needed. Not at same time, obviously.
Nice review! Just for clarification; was the fridge at room temperature before each test, or pre-cooled on AC? If at room temperature, did you leave it open to allow the water to warm up to room temperature between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning? If not, the internal temperature was likely lower before starting the second test. I ask, because I keep my fridge full of water jugs to help avoid compressor cycling. If I turn it off, it is still quite cool inside two days later. Thanks for taking the time to run this test. I'm back and forth on a Jackery 1000 or a lithium iron phosphate battery to replace my dedicated 100A/hr AGM fridge battery. The big advantage of a life4po is lifetime charge cycles of 3-5 times that of lithium ion, but at a much higher cost. Or wait for a life4po version of the Jackery or Goal Zero.
the fridge and water inside was pre cooled before plugging into both power stations. We keep the Dometic running full time on AC when we aren't on trips.

Goal Zero sells replacement batteries. As far as I know you can't purchase a replacement battery for the Jackery (is this true?) If so my pick is Goal Zero because in the long run being able to replace battery instead of purchasing a new unit(s) is a huge savings.
I have a Dokio 300w panel, and two Chinese made 54qt, watt hungry fridges. I run them on a splitter, off the dc port of the jakery 500. It works really well. With the panel out, you only have to worry about the night time. The panel keeps up with the battery drain of the fridges quite well during the day.That is probably going to change significantly come summer in Houston.😀
Goal zero would be no contest. Being their can take more input power, While the jackery can't pull more then 50watts. Plus the 12volt DC plug his fridge plugged into on both units are only rated at 120watts max. And those fridges of 12volts only pull around 50-70watts during their compressor usage. When not, It's less then few watts due to the circut board checking processor and temp controller. So sticking 200watt solar panel to a goal zero, You can power it forever. While the Jackery would likely struggle. Jackery doesn't have the higher recharge power performance that Goal zero does. And it's cooling is lack luster. + the cooling fan only turns on when AC is applied for Jackery. Goalzero will pulse if it senses it's getting it's device warm.
I have a jackery, and a friend has a goal zero. While I haven’t done an actual test, I can tell you the jackery takes far longer to charge than the goal zero, and takes longer than a few other 400w battery packs I have. We noticed this while boondocking together, and the difference was significant.
@@voiceOreezn That has changed since Jackery has quietly changed the controller in all its products. They all have MPPT instead if PWM now. I get around 78w of charging now in winter sun on my 500. Looking forward to high summer to see what the new maximum solar charge rates are.

@@NOLAgenX Goal zero is 150 on 8mm port. But you can dual port for added off-grid power if home power goes out, and have Solar plugged as back up. Combined that with PD of the USB-C 60watt would be 210watts of income power. Lot more then Jackery.
I was going to mention the 500w vs 300w ac plug. But it was mentioned. This… hurts me as I do have the goal zero, and I did find it on sale at sportsman’s… I do really like it a lot. And just picked up a Dometic 55im… yesterday. Was hoping for better performance. However… will be adding a hardwire port to the bed for when I’m driving… and we do have solar. ……but still

The jackerys on sale at at Harbor Freight say Jackery but DO NOT SHOW A MODEL NUMBER. Is there a less efficient line being marketed?I want to know if it is okay to buy HF Jackery? It seems as you could buy a deep cycle battery, inverter ect for way less money. Granted these are in a convenient package. At the end of the day, they are batteries and will not last for more than several years...
Did you happen to check and see how many amps the fridge was pulling? My new fridge tends to pull around 6 amps when the compressor is running and that in 80 plus degree weather.
The USB C is only on the product end for laptops cameras drones etc. Many of them still come with USB A on the charging side, and USB C to A cables are extremely cheap. All legacy devices are USB A so this should not be an issue.
That is actually incorrect. USB C can charge at up to 100 watts. USB A can't come close to that. If you tried to use a laptop plugged in to USBA while using it, it would never charge the battery and in fact would go dead on you if you used it long enough.
Hey, Jehu! I think your Kill-A-Watt is set to measure and hold the lowest watt reading, not the instantaneous (second-by-second) reading. People keep mentioning reactive power vs true power. It's definitely a measurement problem to watch out for. But, your meter displays the RMS values for voltage and current correctly -- the power is just those two multiplied. It should be able to do that and come up with the right answer. That makes me thing the problem is some setting in the meter. Good luck, man!
I'm going to have to find a CPAP and test this. I get quite a few people asking this question. I have a Jackery 1000 on it's way so I can compare the 1000 and the 500 and see which on is the better options.
The Yeti 500x I use has a faulty USB design connection. I have a 1000 and 500. Love the products. However, the second port from the left USB (not the c-port) has a design issue where some USB adapters will have a loose fit causing it to not work. It works but you have to keep pressure on it upwards to make the connection. This issue was found right out of the box. I hope Goal Zero fixed it.
A couple of issues with the test (apart from taking 10 minutes to get to the answer...) is that whilst this compares actual capacity, it's a static draw, not real-world. You mentioned different environments, but also, in action the fridge will be opened/closed regularly and the draw will vary a lot more regularly. It may be that one model performs better/worse when it's subjected to more regular draws from the compressor. This could be down to the battery chemistry because capacity to power draw graphs are not linear. Sure, 500Wh might officially mean 1 watt for 500 hours, but that doesn't mean a 200W draw will actually last twice as long as a 400W - there are other variables at play. Also, the units might perform differently at different loads. You used a fridge (50W?) but maybe a light always on at 100W would be different. It also wasn't clear how old the units were, in months/years but also how many cycles each had had in their lifetime. Capacity isn't everything - battery lifetime matters. If you're spending $500-$1000, you want to know if you'll have to dump it after 2 years and you'll also want to know if you can replace the batteries affordably (i.e. not at 80% of the whole unit cost as is the case with so many other products).
Good vid. If you're trying to impress others....go Yeti, Goal Zero and Dometic. If you don't get free stuff, have sponsors and get hand outs on patreon....there are better options. Between these two...Go Jackery....Goal Zero not worth the extra $$$$$$$. To be honest...Bluetti AC50S is the way to go in the 500 range.
You did state you borrowed the Goal Zero right? So it was in use for how long and had how many charge cycles of life left? Sounded like the Jackery was brand new.
Good, basic endurance test. So, can you charge the Jackery (using a vehicle source) while simultaneously using the Jackery as a power source for a fridge? I would like to plug it into my 4Runner 120V outlet while also drawing power from it for the fridge. So it's charging while we're on the trail, running the truck.
Worth noting that the goal zero will probably have lost some battery capacity after almost 2 months of use. I've had laptop's in the past that had lost about 10-20% of its capacity in just a month or two caused by my own negligent battery usage/storage. And both laptops and most other devices will still report a 100% charge once fully charged regardless of any battery capacity loss.
When you monitor remaining battery level for both units, Jackery says "2W output" but Goal Zero says "0W output". That's probably because fridge is not running constantly. How much power does your fridge drain from Goal Zero when it's running compressor?
Something seems odd here, I don’t see why there would such a dramatic difference in capacity. Either the goal zero has a defect or a bug in the BMS. UPDATE: Warning to anyone that wants to use the 500X to run a Dometic Fridge. There is currently an issue with the 12v socket, where the overcurrent protection trips for an unknown reason. I went through 2 units that had the same issue, therefore this is not a good solution for a "dual" battery setup in a vehicle.

Correction. They can be used to start a dead battery. But you will be doing it the slow way. Not the fast way, where you use one of those high ampage boosters that focus on doing like 500amps straight to the starter. You can 12volt to 12volt connect the Generator to the battery, and leave it powered for awhile. Then try to turn on, Since it'll give juice to the battery itself for a higher ampage shot to the car's starter. (Make sure to remove the power plugs from the car battery to the generator before trying to start.) And no i dout they can run a air compressor, These only have 300 to 500watt of stable power. So if you're getting a tiny small one, Maybe. But a big boy one, will likely used more power.
You said that if all we need is to charge electronic devices, these are overkill. But what if we have several electronic devices (two cellphones, GoPro, drone, Gimbal) that we plan to use liberally over five days? By 'use liberally', I mean we don't want to have to worry about power. Would it then make sense to get the Jackery 500, or should we be looking into the Jackery 300?
I just got about 80 hours with my IceCo JP40 and EcoFlow Delta 1300 and that was with it being about 85 or 90 degrees outside during the day. I think in a home environment it will use about 1 percent an hour. That thing is a BEAST. Great video man thanks.
