Jacket Features (What a Coat MUST Have for a Winter Trip) 

We recently returned from a trip to Europe. I prefer a black jacket also, however, I have a royal blue one. My husband loved me having the colored one. We were with a tour group of 40+ people and almost everyone had black jackets. He said it was so nice that I had the blue one since I was easy for him to spot me in the crowd.

Hi Laurie. I teach skiing all winter and I wear glove liners by T-Max under my gloves or mittens. They have silver finger tips (thumb and forefinger) and when I need a light glove these are my grab and go too. Phone use is easy.

For a seriously cold and wet trip to Canada last year, I packed a thigh length, black, packable down coat and then a camel colored wool wrap coat that tied at the waist to wear over it. Using the packable down as a base layer was a God send, and the outer wool handled the freezing cold water coming off the Niagara Falls beautifully. For other days, I had options between one coat or the other, or both for really cold days. Worked like a charm, and yes, I use the bag to pack my packable coat. Pack and smoosh! 😄

Great tips! You are so right. Especially about wind! There’s is nothing colder than the damp cold wind, as you wait on a train platform in Europe. (And the train is late!)Slant pockets are a “must” too! And a hidden pocket, one big enough for your phone, is another “must” for me. Thanks Laurie!

This is a great topic! We are headed to Europe for the Christmas Markets this year. I bought a 650 down fill, water repellent, packable jacket with a detachable hood - from the 32° company. It's 3/4 length. I'm hoping 🤞I made a good choice! The one thing it doesn't have that I wish it did is an inner pocket. But I'm going to add one myself.

I had a squall jacket from Land's End which was really warm, but bulky. SOMEONE dropped it between the hotel and the parking lot in Kelso, Scotland last month, and someone else didn't notice. The upshot: I get to go shopping! I love all your tips.

I love the idea of the backpack straps. I've worn a wool coat in the past & loved them. I have T~Rex arms so my struggle is finding something that doesn't cover my hands. I always pack my windbreaker (Jones of NY ) & my alpaca scarf from Peru. Always on the lookout for the perfect coat. Great video Laurie. ⛄

I just returned from the west coast of Canada and what I packed was a wool scarf (used it as a blanket on the plane!) and a packabe Lole coat that hit about half way down my thigh (covered me butt!). With a warm fleece or hooded sweat shirt I would have been really toasty if they had cold weather and the coat is waterproof with a hood. Great for the hockey rink watching my nephew. When I run in the winter I wear a pair of HEAD brand gloves that are wind and water resistant but they also have the technical index finger for if i need to use my phone. Thanks for the videos!

Visiting our family in the Netherlands right now. So far the weather has been mild enough to not need the down coat I brought, but have definitely needed my hip length coat, scarf (an absolute must have!), and beanie. I always pack beanies, warm scarves with hidden pockets, and my coat from Columbia that also has a hidden inside breast pocket and slash sleeves. I check weather in advance to make sure I bring what I need and wear my coat if needed on the plane. I detest being cold and wet!

Excellent as usual Laurie! Yes, you're SO right to emphasize the difference between water resistant and waterproof! I had a gorgeous (water resistant) down jacket that I loved... wore it on hols and got caught in some VERY heavy rain! It was like a sponge and got destroyed! I tried to dry it, clean it etc but unfortunately it's never been the same!

Love your travel tips. I recently returned from the British Isles and it was very windy. I wore my Anatomie Kenya Jacket. It is water resistant, lightweight, quick dry, and packable with lots of pockets. The only negative was the price, but it was worth it. It’s definitely not a winter jacket, but it can be worn underneath if layers are needed.

I got a water resistant coat from Orvis that I wore when I went to Acadia National park. It came in petite size and the thing I loved most was the deep pockets inside the coat. I was great for carrying maps and my cell phone. It’s more of a three season coat but with a scarf, merino wool sweater and cotton TShirt I was definitely warm. It rained during our hikes and I didn’t get soaked. Would definitely recommend it.

Thanks, Laurie! Another great video! I bought the Lands End jacket for our rainy, windy trip to Oregon, and it really kept the wind out & kept me dry! I also have a packable Lands End down thigh length coat that I live in all winter long. AND I have a North Face 900 down with a fur lined hood for winter boat outings, but you can remove just the fur. Can you tell I'm really cold natured?! I probably shouldn't admit I live on the SC coast!

My preferred "jacket" for travel is a fleece jacket/sweatshirt and a windbreaker (waterproof is best). You can wear them separately or together depending on what you need/want for the weather and they're very easy to pack. Obviously this combo won't work for very cold and/or snowy destinations, but it's great most places. Also, I like to have one of those emergency rain ponchos and a quart sized ziploc bag to store it in with me. They're great to have not only if you get caught in a downpour but if the wind suddenly starts really blowing as they do a great job of breaking/cutting the wind. The other perk is that the poncho can cover and protect whatever purse, tote, or backpack you're carrying. I even have some that I got off of Amazon that are lined with the same material as those emergency blankets you can buy.

Love the Lands End jackets, especially the ones without down for those of us who are hot natured😊

I love taking the little bag with me on trips! Especially when I travel to multiple locations and don't need a jacket everywhere. Sometimes I'll stuff the jacket and hang it off my carryon the way people hang a travel pillow. I've also compressed it and stuffed it inside my suitcase. So much flexibility. I typically store it in the jacket pocket so I have it with me.

Yes to the hidden pocket, and deep inner pockets. As for sleeves, I am petite and all the sleeves on everything is too long for me. I love the layering system of ski jackets, so I have lost a ton of weight, and I need a new winter coat. I have one to get me to the states, but not while there. Thanks for the video Laurie! I love my Columbia winter coats. I wear them here in the rainy, cold, Northwest, all the time. I have various types for various temperatures, but I travel with one particular coat. It's long enough to cover my tush and hide longer sweaters. It has awesome, zip pockets on the outside, a great zip pockets up near my chest and pockets on the INSIDE, too! Waterproof, but feels like a nice fabric, not a rain slicker. It can cinch in the waist, with a snap "belt" in the back. It has a great hood that can cinch up, but it has a sort of visor to block the rain, too. It looks dressy, but also casual. I bring a scarf, beanie and gloves and layer with sweaters. Navy blue is my go-to. If I was going on an Arctic expedition or to a ski resort, then I'd bring a heavier coat meant for that, but I rarely travel to anywhere colder than home. 😉

Shout out to Lands End! They are headquartered in Dodgeville Wi, my ex husband’s entire extended family works there, executive level down. They do make a great jacket, I have several😉. We travel quite a bit, love your channel and have definitely benefited from your great advice!

I received a fancy Michael Kors packable jacket as a gift, and its been fantastic. I store the bag inside the jacket, on the little loop for the time I may need to pack it.

Traveling to Seattle yet again this December and this vid was all too helpful! I have a jacket similar to your blue one and a parka(?) jacket with a hood. I want to bring both but of course I won’t 😅

Hi Laurie! I am from the Northeast, but lived in Germany for 6 years. I buy my Down jackets from Lands' End. It does not have the straps for carrying, but the faux fur can be zipped off from the hood. The hood cinches around the face.

I have a light pink, long, down jacket from the North Face that somehow tucks perfectly into its own hood! It is a bulky jacket but when I pack it that way it easily goes into my backpack. I have to have a warmer jacket for trips to Stockholm.

I always wear a Cuddl Dudz scarf onto the plane- even in warm weather - I always get cold on flights, it’s comfy and it’s helpful to breathe through when other passengers are gassy.

My husband and I pack a really nice Gortex or similar rain coat with a very packable down vest. 99% of the time this has served us well on our winter travels. Love your channel & watching your subscribers grow! Hey to Ollie!

Thank Laurie! I'm doing a trip next year that will start at 90 degrees and Sunny and go to the 40's and rainy, so I gathered some great tips here!

I have a gortex ski coat (got it from LLBean) & when we have flown to ski trips, we use our heavy coats to wrap his snow skis in his ski case. I've also have a very thick fleece jacket that I have worn in BC Canada in February of this year in - degree weather (I usually wear wool hats that I've knitted & I actually was sweating in it) I usually put extra gloves & hats in all my winter coats.

For travel, I love the Eddie Bauer- Girl on the Go Insulated trench coat. It’s waterproof, has a removable hood and very warm. The lining is removable for warmer weather. A big plus is that they also come in tall sizes. Eddie Bauer always has sales

Great video for winter travel planning. I love having lots of pockets. Scottevest has some lighter weight jackets with tons of pockets. Many are inside or hidden pockets with zippers - great for stashing your passport or iPhone. I really like the extra security in crowds and on public transportation. I also insist on having a hood. It’s a lot more convenient if there is just light rain.

In UK. There is a company called Turtle Doves which has wrist sleeves made from repurposed cashmere. It bridges the gap between your sleeves and your hands/gloves. Hate that sharp breeze that goes down your sleeve. I’m in a very rainy part of UK and I personally love a fake fur liner around the hood. It traps the rain really well and is worth the aggravation of managing it when inside. Alternatively, wear a baseball cap together with a hood from a coat and that helps shelter your face. I’m off to the Atlantic coast in Ireland next week and I will use all these strategies when I’m out walking - particularly to the pub at night for a half of Guinness

Hey Laurie we have not met but the lightweight packable down jackets are called down sweaters by hikers. I wear mine as a lightweight jacket when it’s somewhat cold and I don’t need my heavy coats. Also, I visited Norway a month ago and used many of your tips. Thank you!

My life saver was my packable down long jacket and my packable down vest I wore both together in Iceland. It was very cold in late spring😵‍💫. My vests are definitely life saver in fall in Europe. Not too cold but cold enough. Greetings from Texas!

OMG I buy way too many of those packable jackets (not down filled) in different colors and save all those little bags that come with them to pack them in. I've never used those bags, I just keep collecting them! LOL. My upcoming trip to Lapland Finland, got a longer parka style jacket with a hood that has fake fur. For jackets in general I always look for zip outer pockets or some cool hidden inner pockets!

I'll be road tripping to MN the middle of December and back home the middle of January - I always drive for Christmas. The challenge will be when going to my best friend's wedding in February - I haven't flown in the winter since January 2014 (I still can't believe that I took 2 giant suitcases, a messenger bag, and a backpack to and from home every Christmas break during college - thinking back on it, I'm utterly horrified🤦‍♀), but with the fact that basically all my stuff (except pillow (which I don't have to bring anymore because there's one at my parents' house - one of the many things I keep a duplicate of there, since I can't use just any pillow), Muck Boots (which I may or may not bring in February, because there's no way I'm wearing them on the plane - there's a very good reason that I wear hiking boots instead of Muck boots in the car on winter road trips; if I bring my gaiters, I shouldn't need tall boots)), and medical stuff fit into just my 19" suitcase and 20L backpack last Christmas, I think I'll be okay - I might have to bring the small bag for medical stuff, but we'll see (I have no idea how long that trip will be yet, so I might be able to fit all my medical stuff into just the one packing cube). Thankfully, my bridesmaid dress and shawl (I was asked to be the maid of honor - my best friend (the bride) and I have known each other since we were 4, and we were classmates from our second year of preschool (where we met) all the way up through the end of high school) will be in MN already, so I won't have to pack either of those. My plan is always to check the weather and make sure that I will have a baselayer (these days it's merino for me on really cold days, silk on not-quite-so-cold days, and a cotton/poly blend on warmer days), insulating layer (either wool or fleece for me, and a puffy vest when needed), and shell layer for both top and bottom, plus wool socks and waterproof hiking boots. I may or may not bring my puffy (a very old Mountain Hardwear model - no clue what model because I got it used - that doubles as a windbreaker on those really cold windy days) in February - MN tends to be colder in February than in December or January (Christmas 2013 was an exception - the highs were below 0 most of the time I was there, with one of the nights between Christmas and New Year's having a -75 degree wind chill); I might bring my puffy vest if I really think I'll need it, since that takes up less space. My mom and I are also close enough in size that I can wear some of her things if I need to (she has 2 of my old raincoats, as well as my ski pants - I gave them to her when I upgraded to better ones - so I'm set on shell layers at least (good thing, because my raincoat and rain pants don't like to be rolled up - the seam taping is starting to come off in certain places (I've had them for 5 and 9 1/2 years, so not unexpected), so any time spent folded or rolled only makes it worse)). I honestly don't even remember the last time I wore a real winter coat (my puffy doesn't count because it's not even remotely water resistant, though very much so windproof) - must be almost 10 years ago, on a 3-day ski-packing trip in the Tetons, and before that it was 12 years ago - and I grew up in MN, so that's saying something; I don't spent a ton of time outside in the winter these days, though, so I don't really need one - the days that I do (1-2x/week for just the afternoon, so the warmest part of the day), I layer up instead, because it's easier to shed layers and tie them to the front or back of the saddle than it is a full winter coat (haven't worn a winter coat for riding since 10th grade, and I'm now on my 4th year out of grad school). I'm really short - 4'11.8" (very proud of that .8, because I was 4'10" for the longest time) - so one of the biggest issues I have is sleeves being too long. All of my jackets have velcro at the cuff so that I can cinch them down around my wrists and gloves, keeping out any draft and keeping my hands free. I really love my raincoat (an Outdoor Research Enigma jacket - unfortunately, they don't make it anymore; I really hope they start making it again before mine wears out, because I personally don't like any other raincoat I've ever seen since getting my first Enigma; an REI brand one I got 6 years ago that now belongs to my mom was the only one that even came close, and there were still some things I didn't like about it), because it not only has inside pockets, vertical zip outside pockets that are big enough to fit my entire hand with winter gloves on into, a 2-way front zipper, and hem-to-bicep pit zips (especially helpful when it rains in the summer), but it also has a cinch cord around both the outer edge of the hood, as well as one that runs from front to back to keep it from flopping down over my eyes, but it still has that extended part of the hood that sticks forward to still keep rain off my face, even when the front to back cinch is tightened; the hood is also designed to be able to go over a bike helmet (if it's raining or snowing really hard, I'll sometimes pull it up over my riding helmet, which is ever so slightly taller than a bike helmet), so there's plenty of vertical space and no chance of getting choked by the collar when the front zipper is all the way up. Normally I would wear a medium, but I got a large the last time because I wanted to be able to layer thicker tops under it - it fits my hips well (it's long enough to go pretty much completely over them, but I have a long torso and short legs - 25" inseam), and even though the top part of it looks ridiculously big, it's just the right size to fit my desired layers underneath without being too tight (plus, who cares about looking fashionable when you're just trying to stay warm while riding on a cold windy snowy winter day in the Wyoming Rockies? not us, that's for sure - if it's safe to wear (won't catch on the saddle or anything) and keeps us warm and dry, that's good enough for us).

My packable jacket comes from Khols and it folds right into to it's little bag. When I went to Alabama in December I was able to put in my suitcase without taking up any room.

I have a packable jacket to wear for the commute to the airport. I usually take a train and live up north. I didn't want it to be too bulky because I needed to take it off, and pack it in my carry-on bag immediately once inside, when going to warm destinations.

I just bought a pair of HEAD Sensatec gloves at Marshals for cooler weather. They have a lot of grips to hold a steering wheel as well as touch perfect for phone use. I work at a winter resort in the ski school in NH and these will fit inside my Hestra gloves nicely!!!

I love Lands End. They have such quality items, many things I have had for YEARS !!! I am still on the hunt for one of those packable down jackets (I'm in So. Cal so I never need super warm, but it does get down in the 35-50 in the "heart of winter" at night. My problem is I'm short, and my arms are fat. So arms are always too tight. If I buy plus size, then the rest of the jacket I am swimming in. For some reason, they think plus size is for people that are 6' tall. I'm 5'1.

One can always layer the green jacket with a windbreaker underneath rather than larger, bulkier jacket. More versatility with layers.

I bought a Michael Kors 3/4 down packable coat at Marshals. I have used it in Europe and most of the winter here in the northeast. It has been a fantastic coat all around and packs so small. I will be bringing it on our spring river cruise from Belgium to Holland!

Love your channel. My only thing with down, is to make sure it’s ethically sourced. I looked for that when I bought my down parka. The only brands that guarantee that is Columbia and North Face.

I live in Michigan and our weather is worse than someone with bipolar. (And no I'm not making fun of someone with that disorder as i have family that have bipolar. I'm just giving an idea on how often Michigan weather ( including temps) can change throughout the day) And during our fall, winter, and spring months our temperatures can change throughout the day so i found an amazing coat from Zero Xposure and it has 2 different types of jackets that when combined it makes for a warm coat. The hood on it is big and can come off if need be. Both jackets have slanted big pockets and if you want the outer jacket fits perfectly over that comfortable favorite hoodie that you may have. I have yet to find a coat though that could withstand (freezing and extremely high winds) polar vortexes that we get in January and February.

I have packed my longer packable jacket in its bag ( that would have made a great laughter video), to take to MN. I left 78 degrees and landed in 36 degrees. My packable jacket is lightweight and an Amazon Essentials, but kept me very warm in the dreay/snowy Minnesota 30's.

"climate is what you expect. weather is what you get." unfortunately, another feature I lost when AT&T dropped support for my 4G phone when they ended 3G service was that the screen was made to work with gloves. (ticked me off to the point I bailed on AT&T and got a new verizon phone and switched my computer account back to verizon along with it.) I go with the insulation and shell philosophy on jackets, and as you've seen, I put all my pocket stuff in my jacket before security so I can just put my jacket in the tray and not be stuck fishing stuff out of my pockets. addendum: I actually get annoyed with sweater cuffs. they tend to soak up water and get soggy.

I got a Bernardo packable coat last year. I love it! The only thing it doesn't have that I wish it did is the backpack straps.

I just got a men's free country jacket that a friend recommended from lowes. Hoping it is warm enough for our frigid northern Maine winter. I'll for sure check out a couple from this list just in case.

Great topic. One jacket I travel with is a Barbour wax jacket which is warm and waterproof. I prefer a jacket that is long enough to cover your bum when you are out and about touring.

I have yet to find gloves that work with the phone. However, by accident I found that my rubber garden gloves work… who knew! So, I cut the finger tip off the garden glove (which was super cheap) and put it over my gloved finger and tah-dah!!! Looks funny, gets lost in my pocket sometimes, but I get to keep my gloves on AND take pictures with my phone.

a hood is a must as well as a jacket that covers the butt! Must be water resistant and waterproof too. I like front and side pockets. I have had this type of coat for years and love it for traveling to colder places. Blessings!

I think the best feature in any jacket is that loop on the shoulder. They are meant to loop over your bag strap and prevent it from sliding off. It works. I never have to readjust the bag on my shoulder.

Could you possibly add some pictures of the backpack straps your jacket has? how are they attached and where? How long are they? I have a jacket that I love but I would really like to add that feature to it myself if I can figure out how to do it well.

Trying to buy a winter coat while living in Malaysia is hard! I have a very limited choice. I found a long down coat with a big hood water resistant is 500 ringgit Malaysia. Not cheap at all. Going to Seattle in December

Can you do a video on what to wear on the airplane when you come from a cold climate to a warm climate., such as from Minneapolis to Hawaii.

I'm an animal rights activist so down is a no-go for me so I went for a Patagonia Micro Puff jacket (with hood) which was quite an investment even with it on sale and a gift card but already worth it. The non-down can get wet and dry quickly and not clump too. I layer a sealed zipper Patagonia rain coat and the combo is VERY warm (and I'm always cold). They both fit in their own pocket and in my EDC backpack or you can carabiner it to the outside of a backpack. So far, Patagonia has the best jackets I've ever had...so watch for sales or last year's model!! Lastly, I layer a thermal, LS tee shirt, Turtle fur ear cover (folds super small and comfy under a hood), Head brand gloves (with index pad for phone use which is okay but doesn't always work) and responsible cashmere (no animal cruelty) scarf when it's really cold.

Going to Scotland in November ‘23. What type of coat? I have so many now but fear they won’t be water repellent and warm. My casual winter coat for Michigan below 45 F is great but sorta heavy. Hooded and by Lands End. And did you do a travel hiker boot show for Northern Europe and UK during Christmas market season?

Being a bit podgy, I have always shied away from wearing those down-filled jackets. I don't want to look like the Michelin Man! The Lands End one is more suitable, but does it pack away well?

Check Costco. I got gloves that work well with the phone. No need to remove gloves. Off to Christmas Market trip this year.

Sorry Laurie this Canadian totally disagrees. No down. Consider North Face Thermoball coats. And you don’t need a bag. Just roll up the coat into the hood for packing. Zippers on pockets a must as well as an interior breast pocket. Sleeves need elastic to keep out cold and tuck in mittens

Scarves to keep warm, yes yes yes! I know a number of American men who will not wear a scarf in the winter - European men wear them all the time because it makes a huge difference keeping warm! Not a macho issue for those guys at all. (Think Bob Cratchit: he had no winter coat but the big wooly scarf kept him going 😊)

Hey Lauri what do you suggest for a coat that will probably only be used on one trip. Going to the Christmas Markets next year and while I live in southern Cali I have no need for a heavy coat. Should I got out on a limb and get one. I don’t want to be miserable but I don’t get cold like some.

I have a heavy weight from LL or Lands 🧐 one of those!!! Great when I went to London in Dec! Now we are headed to Alaska 🥶 it’ll come!!! But I’m RENTING outerwear 👀 looking for hats and gloves 😳

Would the green jacket be good for an Alaskan cruise (on a midwest gal)? Also Land's End is located in Wisconsin and has straight sizes that go up to size 18.
