I had the opportunity to meet Robert Forster. We were both at a screening of a movie. After the movie we walked to the place where the after party was supposed to be. We got a little lost. During this whole time we chatted. His wife was with him too. Really nice guy. Very friendly. No ego whatsoever. We finally found the place and walking with him that night was more special than the party! I had another chance to see him again after that. Once again a very friendly guy. I was shocked to hear that he had died. Too early. RIP.
I met Robert Forster at a grocery store in Los Angeles 20 years ago. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
@@chrisspring5346 that story is not true. I read the same thing about Boris Becker, I mean the exact same story. Maybe just a running gag, to switch the celebrity and tell this story
You know what's overrated? The buzzword phrase of "...is so underrated" is. Who needs someone else's approval or popularity polls? Why care or put such value on other's opinions? "underrated" is overrated and has gone beyond a cliche'. Who's the greatest film critic? I am.
This plot was so brilliant that I failed to comprehend it the first time I watched the movie, some 20 years ago. Having watched it recently for the second time, I like the movie even more now. Putting a "cherry on top" for Melanie in the bag was a very subtle but vital detail, because Melanie having the marked bills on her sealed the story Jackie told the police.
@@JmsNmnn Jackie isn't stupid she knew Melanie may look in the bag and she'd be fucked if Melanie checked it before leaving the dressing room because once out in public Melanie and Louis can't check the bag. Jackie is the real MVP she planned this, played off the ATF, Ordell and his minnions then fucked off with a half a mill and her freedom and no comeback! Pam Grier deserved an Oscar for this she was outstanding and she had great chemistry with Samuel L Jackson. I wish she makes another movie with Tarantino she's a fanstastic actress
The look Luis gives Melanie is so potent. You could just tell he’s reached his limits end with her. Also when he snags the bag from her and says “I knock you the fuck out”. Deniro is masterful here.
I actually prefer reading Leonard to seeing the movies, as I can create in my own head through the fiction better than any movie. With Leonard, it's all in the dialogue.
Wish it had been better received. Might have saved QT from the awful rabbit hole of terrible movies he's been making ever since. A great talent squandered on absurd dross.
It doesn't get nearly the accolades that Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs do but I find it infinitely more rewatchable. Pam Grier's magnum opus, she is perfect.
Nah, she just looks like someone who's trying hard to *project* strength and confidence. Authentic strength and confidence is far less overt. Awesome movie, though!
De niro is genius !! we knew it already but every scene with him I see again, it appears more.. his facial expressions are SO good!!! goes from funny to scary in the blink of an eye..
7:52 I truly believe the synchronization of Robert Forester, Robert De Niro and Bridget Fonda leaving after the exchange would have been great in the movie, especially when De Niro shoots Bridget in the parking lot and at the same time Forester looks up at the exit like maybe he heard something and made him want make sure he was in the clear.
I was at Del Amo mall back in 2002, bought this film on DVD from a DVD store there, took it back to the cruise ship I was working on at the time, put the film on and was shocked to see that a large part of the film is set in that very mall. What was even crazier was that I'd eaten lunch that day about 10 feet from where they shot the scene in the food court. Quite a head fuck.
godisbollocks I grew up in Torrance, when I was a kid my grandfather would take me to the Del Amo mall to go play at the video arcade. I’m glad Tarantino filmed a lot of this movie in Torrance and the Del Amo mall, brings back a lot of my childhood memories.
@Cool Waters At some point it was acquired by the Westfield company, the location is still there, but it has been remodeled to the new era. This film pretty much preserves of what I remember the mall used to look like.
I had always wondered why Tarantino didn't play a cameo in this film like most of his others. Then I realized one day watching this movie, that the robotic voice on Jackie's answering machine was Tarantino's!
It's amazing in how many ways Louis messes up his relatively simple task. While everyone in this scene acts more or less efficiently, he is basically overwhelmed with every single thing happening around him. What an idiot. :D
Clementine Washburn got it. I misheard it. I thought she was referring to their short sex scene from a little bit earlier. Would’ve been funny, but DeNiro’s expression is still priceless.
Jackie Brown is a stone cold classic. A hidden gem in films. 10/10. I like when Jackie goes "booooyahhhh" I've got the original movie poster from 1997 framed up.
Two things you can count on Tarantino to do:- 1) Make you fall in love with music even if its stuff you may have heard before 2) Make you want to eat stuff even if its stuff you may have eaten before
Thanks. This is one of my favorite movies and I've watched this sequence a hundred times. I'm glad it was shot from the different characters' perspectives, but this chronological perspective makes a perfect companion piece.
@@fastkarr8256 Mid 90s wasnt a guarantee that every store had full coverage cameras, especially in fitting rooms. But, I agree - check the footage, know Max cherry has the loot.
That's awesome. Even while re-watching this and knowing the outcome I'm still on the edge of my seat. The music really puts you in the actor's shoes. I know that style music would be running through my head if I was trying to pull this off.
God, the whole thing gets so tense in that middle bit where he's going into the change room, it felt like he was going to get shot or something. Nice job.
It's actually the same exact car. It's even in kill Bill vol. 2 when bud drives up to his shit job at the tittie bar it's the only car in the parking lot lol
Him and tarantino disliked each other for the role because de niro wasn’t acting aswell as he was supposed to because he thought he was being underpaid. Still a great performance though
Fun Fact - Apparently Quentin said that to plan this whole sequence it took him almost 6 months to write it all out and when it was time to shoot, he had gone through it so many times they got it all shot in around a day hah!!...
When 'Strong female character' means exactly what it says on the label: A strong (NOT as in 'unbeatable god-mode videogame NPC) woman CHARACTER (as in 'well-written', 'relatable', 'engaging'). RIP movies.
Yes, that's really clever, I was hoping someone would deconstruct that scene. The sequence in the original blows my mind every time. I get lost in it like DeNiro. You reveal it is really a lot simpler than it seems, and at the same time more meaningful. There are mirrored parallels between the the storyline of the two "couples." Thanks.
I love Jackie Brown! It's one of my favorite Tarantino movies. The scene with Louis shooting Melanie cracks me up everytime. Why would she keep annoying a very bad tempered, unstable man like that lol?
She had no idea he was a suicidal lunatic. It's funny, I remember her being much, MUCH more annoying leading up to her shooting. Nothing she was doing or saying was worth the risk he incurred on himself by throwing her around the store, much less shooting her.

I've seen this movie a million times and until now, I never paid attention to what was going on on the right hand side screen. Confirmed....nothing was really going on there, except the getaway ^^
VERY cool video! My favorite Tarantino film ever. I even named my pit bull Jackie Brown. Seriously I did. Great film and a great soundtrack. This is fantastic! I have never seen it like this before. The timing on the gun shots how Max looked up immediately following the second shot as though the echo of the first just reached him like he hears the shots and looked back for a second. NEVER would've out that together without this video! Thanks!
Max parked right outside the Billingsley exit. Louis and Melanie parked somewhere else, they had to take the elevator. That's why they took longer to get in and out.
Nico yes it drowns out some shots from activity during Daylight most days . Except for the time we were doing Line Work in a Neighborhood and down the Block I heard a Dog barking and a Shotgun blast . I am a Deer Hunter so a Shotgun going off is normally a Happy sound , But not in the city in Broad daylight . We had some young kids working with us who were smart ass Punks so I made my way down the block expecting that they set some thing off . No the guy was sick of the Dog barking that the Kids stirred up and just up and shot it . Every time I drive past that street I think of the incident from a Day at work a couple Decades ago and shake my head Remembering those Kids I worked with . They never learned ! ha ha
Melanie did everything that she could to try and cause chaos then zip away with the bag. But she actually underestimated what could happen. Jackie ACTS like it’s no big deal…but she knows it is.
The chemistry between Pam Grier and Robert Forster ist just perfect, for example in the scene where he is at her place. So vibrant. And Robert Forster is unbelievably, charmingly cool the whole time. Very impressive. :D

I had so much anxiety watching unfold for the first time. Wondering if she was gonna slip up or something. Holy eff this was such a good film. Honestly probably one of (if not) my favorite Tarentino film
DeNiro was already brain dead but that Louisssssss sent him off. He and Jackson were such irredeemable characters. Still I love this movie to the moon and back. Off the chart performances.
Jackie was doin recon on the scene prior to the exchange. Jackie knows Melanie's type. Jackie knew they would be late. She knew Melanie's temperament, spoiled, entitled, reckless, mouthy...when cash this big gets moved, Jackie knew someone would be killed. She didnt account for Ordell killing Louis, but she got them all out of the way. Brilliant.
And the sudden cut back to Jackie looking at herself in the mirror, trying to steel herself up for what she's about to do. That sharp contrast between the nonsensical, childish bickering between Melanie and Louis and Jackie's quiet contemplation is incredibly effective.
typingbacon - While he certainly did so at other times in the film and in other films, I disagree about this sequence. De Palma would have done it split screen. I’d say this is more along the lines of the Rashomon effect.
they should of made a format of this scene exactly like this in the movie. Would of gave it a precise feel of what was going on in everyone's heads and we would of been able to see it unfold through multiple angles.. love this edit
Love this film . I really thought both Pam Grier and Robert Forster both should have got an Academy Award for the most likeable couple ever in a film . One award for both of them would have been lovely .
Bridget and RDN had a surprising amount of chemistry as a pairing tbh. Shame it was just short lived in the film and he bumped her off. I could watch a dark comedy with those two, thick as thieves lol
God I loved this movie. Tarantino's movies make sense logically. Perfect casting - or is it the direction? People I never would have imagined that absolutely nail their performances. I always think back to Michael Parks in Kill Bill 2. McGraw and Vihaio, characters that are worlds apart. How?
