As a fan of Jackie Chan since I've seen "Die Schlange im Schatten des Adlers" (Snake in the Eagle's Shadow) about 30 years ago, I was a bit sceptic, that someone tries to make a Jackie Chan-Style fight scene. Also, the one you have taken as reference is quite an iconic one. So, in my eyes, the stakes were very high. I was very suprised to see, that the result was that good. Not only, that you took Jackie's advice with the static camera and avoid to use so much Hollywood-Fakery, you also included very good timed comedy. For me, I got finally hooked, when you scared your "scene-enemy" Julia Elizabeth and she turned into the board. That was totally Jackie-Comedy ... kudos for that. You have also included the outtakes at the end. Although, as a fan of Jackie Chan, I was very pleased with your performance (fighting and comedy), I'm a bit reluctant to lift you exactly on the same level as the Meister. So, if I would give at least Jackie Chan 105%, because he is larger than life, I would give you solid 97%. That was a very good adaptation of Jackie's fights into a modern era. Keep it on, maybe, the Meister will contact you ;)

Totally agree with the long takes and wide angles. This was a joy to watch. Fight scenes with quick cuts and edits are so boring to watch and you know they are doing it because of the lack of skill with either the actors or choreographer

@@grennbalze I know, right? Every time I see a quick-cut fight scene from a shaky hand-held cam I say to myself: "I wish I was watching a Jackie Chan movie right now". You might as well just fade to black and put a text on the screen saying "and so they fought, but it was so fast and energetic no one could really see anything." Like, what's the point. I get covering misses with clever camera work and editing, but you don't have to cover the WHOLE FIGHT by shaking the camera like a mad man and then cutting the film into confetti only to splice it later like it's the Frankenstein's monster, only if Dr Frankenstein had the Parkinson's disease. It's infuriating. I'm sorry for the bandwagon rant, it's just a pet peeve of mine xD

You and your team got SO MUCH right with this scene! Didn't cut on hits, changed locations/raised stakes, showed the Hero character "learning" and taking control, and even put in the 1v1 showdown finale. Really great job with this, Omar and Team! (VERY) Minor critique: There were a few more coverage/insert/edit cues that could probably be hit. If you haven't, you should really watch Tony Zhou's Every Frame a Painting episode on Jackie's work called "Jackie Chan - How to Do Action Comedy", it can be found here on the RU-vids. Most of it is what you already observed in your reaction video, but you may learn a few more things to help you with the next one.
@danielolsen8114

I loved it! The entire sequence was bad-ass! First of all, a children's playground is perfect for the style of fight, with swings and bars and slides, etc. to use. I loved the speed, the resourcefulness, even the sand in the face kick! (which is a classic unwritten rule of playground etiquette). And you also faked out someone into turning and hurting themselves (always a bonus). And I also liked how there were a couple of moments where you actually made me think the hero was beaten, but then he was able to resurrect himself. There was something so satisfying about the choreography and humor of the scene, and it was so well done that it didn't matter if I didn't know who the actors are; it didn't take away from the enjoyment. Your team is amazing. Highest compliments. I can't imagine the amount of talent, time, effort, and dedication it takes to master the skills you guys have.

Jackie's trickery from a position of vulnerability was always more elaborate and entertaining than what we see here. The part with the swingset at 1:23 would've seen Jackie avoiding a series of strikes from this position, and bewildering his attackers. Also, Jackie's scenes usually show him acting single-mindedly towards a purpose. I think it would've been more true to Jackie's style to play the scene that way. If his goal is to keep/get the suitcase, he *will absolutely not stop* chasing the suitcase when it's taken from him. His encounter with the "final boss" character should've featured Jackie retreating across the playground, actively chasing the (now scared) man with the suitcase, while fending off and flabbergasting his fantastic opponent.

@@OmarZaki It seems Richard is upset because the martial arts isn't "realistic" and unlikely to be useful in a real world scenario. Unfortunately, that's not what this is about. This is theater. Theatrics are not meant to be translated to real world effectiveness. I think that's the fundamental disconnect here; he thinks we're expecting this to be how an actual real world fight would go, but we know that a real fight wouldn't go this way and just enjoy the silliness for the entertainment it was designed to be. In short, he doesn't think we're aware this is theater, which is amusing considering we're discussing the choreography.

Budget and shooting schedule considered this is an excellent homage to Jackie Chan. There were some moments I rewatched just like I would with a JC fight scene. Very impressed with all the performances and Julia sold some of her hits hard, or took some hard hits well.

This is just phenomenal, the Webster kick to the stomach was definitely my favorite part because it shows such an insane amount of Ariel control to pull that off

Came to this one from the Jackie Chan reaction vid. Very well done. You could see better when punches were pulled here vs a Jackie Chan movie, but the energy was on par and many of the stunts had the right style. Of course, no one can match the real Jackie Chan, but this was a solid re-creation of the Jackie Chan style.

This was absolutely beautiful. Nostalgic and wonderful. I hope Jackie Chan gets to see and enjoy this. I know it would make him happy to see how much fun and passion you've put into this homage to the unique choreography of the fights in his movies.

Well done guys! Nice touch when you scare the girl and she turns and runs into the play structure! That little touch really brought home the feel of a Jackie Chan movie. Fantastic stunt work and choreography.
