The 61st Royal Variety Performance Filmed from the Victoria Palace Theatre on 19th November 1991 by LWT. Many, many stars in the cast including Diana Ross, Elaine Paige, Wayne Sleep and Les Dawson.
This show was attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and was in aid of the EABF (Entertainment Artists Benevolent Fund).
This clip is of Jackie Mason...born on June 9, 1931 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA as Jacob Moshe Maza. He is an actor and writer, known for The Jerk (1979), Caddyshack II (1988) and History of the World: Part I (1981). He has been married to Jyll Rosenfeld since August 14, 1991.
In 1987, received a Special Tony Award for his one-man show, "The World According to Me."
His first one-man show, "The World According to Me," was a success on stage both here and in Europe. He won a special Tony and an Outer Critic's Circle Award, plus an Ace Cable, Emmy, and Grammy award when he transferred it to other mediums.
He grew up surrounded by rabbis, which include three of his brothers. He himself was a cantor until age 25 when he too was ordained a rabbi. He left the synagogue after three years however; later quipping, "Someone in the family had to make a living".
Jackie Mason sayings…
“I have enough money to last me the rest of my life unless I buy something.”
“It's no longer a question of staying healthy. It's a question of finding a sickness you like.”
“If an Englishman gets run down by a truck he apologizes to the truck.”
“I don't believe that anybody has come to a conclusion on why something is funny. It's funny because it's ridiculous and it's ridiculous for different reasons at different times.”
“Did you ever hear of a kid playing accountant - even if they wanted to be one?”
“Eighty percent of married men cheat in America. The rest cheat in Europe.”
“My comedy doesn't come from any calculations and studies.”
“I have nothing but love in my heart and everything I say is just an instrument for laughs.”
“I can't predict the future and I don't have respect for people who try to.”
“My material is as new as anything on the dinner table. What difference does it make if I'm 70 or if I'm 20? The audience knows they aren't getting any old stories from me.”
“It is more profitable for your congressman to support the tobacco industry than your life.”
“I can't pretend that I'm a great student of the art of comedy because anybody that becomes philosophical about humor doesn't know what he's talking about.”
“I've been watching politics for 35 or 40 years and you just never know. You can have one person win the Iowa caucus and then the whole picture changes ten minutes later. The same thing can happen again after New Hampshire. I have no idea what's going to happen with our country in the future.”
“Predictions are preposterous.”
“A schmuck like Bernie Sanders pops out who doesn't even know what's going on and doesn't care. Because to him Israel getting wiped out is no problem. Climate change is the only problem. To him, the most important thing in the world is climate change. If Israel gave up their country but they fought for climate change, he would love Israel. In ten minutes, they would be his favourite country.”

I was just thinking the same thing. If you asked a group of people, "Who is a great comedian?", several names would be mentioned, but I'd wait them out knowing I'd be the first to say, "Jackie Mason!"

Hi John. Thank you for your encouraging words. It is fantastic to see comedians performing such intelligent humor and some of his words are quite prophetic nearly 30 year on!!! I intend to post more. I have my own archives to finish first and then I will be launching an appeal through my contacts to see if I can find some more rare footage...there must be an awful lot of people out there sitting on this type of thing...without the means, the know how or the time to convert the originals and post...as I myself have done for the last 12 years... You can read more about my archive project and where these clips of film came from on my playlist here ru-vid.com/group/PLuf1VnRv5teYW5kxbcjBpnx9-PLgFg7I6 more from the world of comedy here ru-vid.com/group/PLuf1VnRv5teY-kZc1XRu7miLShd-i7YY7 if you are feeling very naughty I have a blue comedy playlist here!!! ru-vid.com/group/PLuf1VnRv5teajMBZTWaEIjpW6GF3ELD9X

He had a $45,000 contract with Ed Sullivan in the 1960s, then the controversy over a gesture Jackie apparently made to Sullivan happened. Ed canceled his contract & Jackie sued for $3 million - AND HE WON! Sullivan eventually apologized, but the controversy did affect his career. Jackie took some time off to regroup. It was a long road back to comic Stardom. In the end, Jackie got the last laugh. He starred on Broadway in a one man show and really was The 'Toast Of The Town'. It must've galled Ed Sullivan because that was Sullivan's byline in NYC before he had his network TV show. Jackie may have come to national prominence on the Ed Sullivan Show, but it was his humor that brought him back into prominence, and set him up among the funniest of stand-up comics to come out of the 1960s. He died yesterday, age 93. I, for one, am sorry he's gone. Many kids these days don't know who he was, or the genre of 'Borscht Belt' comedy to which he belonged. He was once one of the hippest acts in America. R.I.P.

Beautifully worded. Today wont produce comedians like him who hold the audience in their hand. He stuck all his best material in just 10 minutes in London Royal variety in 1991 and it stole the WHOLE show. It's on you tube and must have watched it 10 times as listening to the audiences response to that 10 minutes was fantastic.

boy could he take Trump,'s insanities, incoherences, inanities apart with the humor that doesn't suffer fools lightly, and which bring s forth truth.Humor is another way of telling the truth. Authoritarian personalities can't stand being laughed at. Brainless, humorless, senseless leadership, no matter how proIsrael, is not good enough for me. Even the monster Hitler supposedly screened Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator(1940)and the reaction, I don't know. Hair Furor. aka Mr.Twitler, never laughes, have you noticed? at himself, can't take it either.Poor unjustly treated Ole BoneSpurs, can only laugh at and unfeelingly mock others. An update of that famous question, Have you no decency, no respect? The question was directed at Sen.McCarthy, with Roy Cohn- later Trumpius' lawyer in the 80s, right at his elbow.

Mason was a gifted comic with superb timing and an onstage character that won over audiences by insulting them. He's probably the last of the Yiddish comedians in American show business, and he plays the part as though presiding at an irreverent memorial service. It's interesting to hear his material about Israel in the light of injustices inflicted on Palestinians by their conquerors and occupiers. The line about Shamir being unable to give back the West Bank because it's in his wife's name not only gets a good laugh, it reminds us of how little Palestinian claims to their own land mattered to Mason and his comfortable audience in London's West End. And his amusing bit about Israelis reacting to air raid sirens during the first Gulf War tends to banish all thought of the tens of thousands of Iraqis killed by U.S. bombs in that same conflict. But he wasn't there to address unpleasant truths. That would have been really insulting.

Two comments you made need qualification. President Bush forbade Israel to attack Iraq even tho we were bombarded with scud missles. For the first time Israel sat back while being attacked which is not what Israel is used to doing-- to please the first Bush. Shamir was being bullied by Baker and the Bush administration to hand over Israel on a silver platter to that murderer Arafat The world at that time accused Israel of blocking peace. The joke about Shamir's wife owning what he called the west bank was a joke that ingratiated the left and Bush and Baker. It was before the bombing of busloads Israelis ad infinitum. Now Jackie Mason would never make that joke and most likely thinks about it on The day of Atonement.

@@sueme1954 Every time Israel crushes Palestinians, invades its neighbours, buys up the U.S. Congress- it's poor little Israel, victim of the world.
