The problem is that this kind of eco-business is one of the only things keeping them alive. The people who live in this part of the world are concerned first and foremost with feeding their own families. If they can't do that giving orangutan tours, they could very well decide they need to resort to slash-and-burn agriculture to do so. "Leave them alone" is first-world privilege talking. People in developing countries are not going to care more about wild animals than they do feeding their own kids. Expecting them to do so is pie-in-the-sky nonsense.
Orang utan they're not trying being nice with you but treat you as a hostage instead, if you don't feed them, they will bite you. This is the truth and misconception about orang utan when they grabbed your hand.

The unregulated orangutan tourism business in Bukit Lawang which feeds orangutans (directly or indirectly) has caused high infant mortality and even cases of infant cannibalism in the area. Jackie has bitten people quite seriously before if she doesn't get her payoff in food.
