QUICK COMMENT ANSWERS! PLEASE READ! Yes I am incredibly mediocre at the game, thank you for noticing. I don't really care how you say Chaud. Say it however you want. I might touch on the remake at some point in the future. Yes I'm covering all the main Battle Network games as well.
Thank you for these videos, im glad someone finally covered this series. Nobody talks about these games and you do at the very least a decent job at going through the most important details
Played every single battle network growing up except for the first. I got mmbn2 as a Christmas gift or something. Nice to know I didn't miss much. Also, yes, I agree mmbn4 was a downgrade after playing 3. Tedious, repetitive, less fun battlechips, permanently missable battlechips (Some battlechips of a certain lettercode were 2nd playthrough only). I still miss style change.
I was wonder why you didn't play the 2009 remake of this game which got some voice acting, fixes for all the issues you complained in the video, quality of life improvement from later games such as chip sorting, reduced random encounter rate and an alternate Megaman that has a shield and a lock-on gap close. Many issues mentioned in this video were already fixed in 2009 remake and it's a much nicer experience as the first entry for the series.
Megaman Battle Network predicted the future if you think about it. You have kitchen appliances that are connected to the internet, Alexa, Corona, Siri, and Google Assistant are a thing, everyone has a device that is portable and is able to access the internet, cybercrimes is a thing, etc.
OMG..you were right..this game was made before smartphone become a huge thing. Smartphone is a normal to have, and can do so many things..how fast technology evolve
It's a concept that's been around for awhile now, predating Battle Network, it's the "internet of things." Your Echo at home is an example of IoT technology.
In interviews the team explains that this was intentional. Apparently hey were looking into tech progress and I guess some sciences or psychological predictors (I honestly forgot the terminology they used) to help guide them on judging what tech in real life would be progressing into the future so they added details that would reflect how those may be useful or interesting or even just details for world building. They kinda got lucky on all the details that hi and ended up actually being what we experience now. I'd guess the details that missed faded into the background of the game and we dismiss how weird those may be with "ah its just the game" so we don't really even think about them as much if at all. Super interesting they were beyond just creative predictors, they straight us used statistics and science to help dictate what the future of tech would look like.
@@SKysofRain another game that did that was the .hack//quadrilogy in the tech news section there are examples of home automation controllable by texting them, the affordable VR by 2016, how stupidly connected society was and how that was a horrid idea and how more and more issues come up IE major infrastructure like gas pipelines the power grid to dam release valves could be controlled from the net to even how a majority of them are born from incompetence of tech oligarchies rather than malice....most of the time. There seemed to be a theme in the early 2000's that letting tech have too much control was a horrible idea...Disaster report had things like that too now that i remember it.
THAT'S WHAT YOU THINK! if it was re-released today like Pokemon Go, it'll be extremely popular! With customizable NetNavis, an entire Battle scene, and random virus battles? Yeah, it'll work as an app.
I dont understand why google doesnt go this direction like making his database a personification of the user, they already have youtube, google, facebook and instagram, appstore connected to the same account and add them features to make them like a little society unbetween the contacts... i just really love this game dont take me seriously
djangogeek Well to be honest, i don’t know, but i do know there have been discord servers around centering around it. Maybe if you could find one, they can hook you up, and you get into it. Try looking up “Team BN” and see if that does anything
BN3 is balanced...? I'd say BN5 is closer to being as balanced as 6... If only because of how restrictive that game made folder building. I can't comment on BN4, because... There's possibility for innovation, but Airhockey is broken. I do wonder if it's possible to break your own panels to prevent your opponent's Airhockey... Eh. But BN3? May I remind you about the F Folder with its infinite stun and high damage output, which turns the game into who can press A first? And how there's a shit ton of defense chips that can drag a game out longer than it needs to be? Oh yeah, and as mentioned, folderbak, particularly if used along with the 11th chip glitch. Plantman lock can also be pretty terrifying as well... Oh, also, you don't have any breaking chips, have fun with your opponent spamming barriers until they have Holy barrier. Then have fun with not being able to deal damage. The tornado folder is at its most fun here though at least, what with having the most consistency here.
Wouldn’t it be such a trip if capcom came out with an app that was similar to Pokémon go, but mmbn where you could custom your net navi, earn battle chips and customizations for your Navi of different types depending on where you jack-in
It would be a ARG of massive proportions, imagine being able to find special areas and rewards depending on where you are irl, very similar to jacking in to random objects in the BN games.
105k views in 1 year on a 12k subs channel, it's clear that people still love the battle network series 20 years later. There really should be a remake/remaster or even a completely new addition to the battle network series!
I don't know if someone has explained this yet, but Enzan when written as 演算 can mean "operate" but his given name is written as 炎山 which isn't a word (just a way to write a name) but 炎 individually means flames and 山 means "mountain." In other words, its a kanji reference to a firey mountain (ie: a volcano), but it also is pronounced the same way as "operate."
Popping in for more info even if it's late. The video mentions "kazan" (火山) being a fire mountain. The "ka" bit is more like a general term for fire, as in the element, or when something is burning. 炎 on the other hand is more intense so usually the translation that's used for that becomes blaze (probably why Enzan is Chaud Blaze in the anime localization). On a somewhat connected but unrelated note, the pokemon Entei is probably spelled as 炎帝, which would mean flame emperor, but we can't be too sure because all pokemon names are spelled with katakana.
Nice to see this series isn’t forgotten about like I was thinking the other day ’m Playing 3 and 5 right now 5 is just too hard but I’m making progress
@@philipwrighton yeah..i think so..i can't remember that much. Perhaps the liberation mission made this game harder..All MMBN game is moderate to hard difficulty, which is why i love this game so much
They should just slap all the MMBN games on switch for $40 and I'll gladly buy it, physical or digital. lol Heck If they threw in MM Star Force I'd even throw more money at them. Assuming they could somehow get that looking decent on the switch. lol (Cause the dual screens)
On Mayl's name, the anime actually got it as best they could considering her name in Japanese is "Meiru". Swap the R for the L and you basically have the same pronunciation. No idea what happened to the U in translation though.
When translating you have to choose between the straight pronunciation, the straight translation or the meaning. You also have to account for the difference in the way the language and cultures vary between the two countries. Sometimes the straight pronunciation would be too unnatural. English names don't end in U. So the translator/s went with a happy middle ground by choosing a name that kept the thrust of the original pronunciation, made a pun on email, and sounded like it could be a normal name in English.
on the flip side of english names never really ending in u, Japanese names (or even words at all) don't ever end in consonants that aren't n. So any attempt at rendering an english word like "mail" in Japanese inevitably has a u at the end. It's a really short u just shy of silent anyhow, so take what you can get really.
They dropped the U because her name was always a pun on the word "mail," as in email. Calling her Meiru or Maylu would be a direct translation but it would make the pun less obvious, and the point of localization is to convey the same meaning if a direct translation would muddle it.
I'm 27 now. I played these games growing up in elementary and junior high school. Just watched the video and I'm still feeling nostalgic and emotional. Thank you so much 💞
Sweet video. The mmbn series was my childhood, and I wish more people knew about it! 1 may have had its problems, but its later titles (3 mostly) will always have a place on my favorite games list.
The editing is on point and your jokes had me literally laughing out loud. Great video and thanks for bringing back my childhood memories and teaching me more about the little details i missed
Man, that intro music... what a hit of nostalgia. I freakin loved these games as a kid! I'm sure you've heard of the current one fans are making? Chrono X? I played their demo about 2 years ago, and it was pretty fun to play.
Nice video series. I am pretty sure Dr. Froid is supposed to be pronounced « Froh-wah », not « Froyd ». Froid is the French for « cold », hence both a logical name for the human thematically linked to Ice Man and the Ice Dungeon, as well as the enemy introduced opposite Chaud (French for hot/warm as you figured out). Froid’s Japanese name is 氷川 which sounds and looks like a regular Japanese surname but can be read literally as « Frozen River » . PS: Also! Dr. Hikari is another pun. He has the same name in Japanese. Hikari means light in Japanese, so he is the game’s Dr. Light. But Hikari was also the common name given to high speed internet in Japan (Hikari Fiber is the local term for « fiber-optic cable ») in the early to mid 2000s, before the avent of WiFi.
@@carlosaugusto9821 It really is poorly used. 20th Anniversary this year, no word from Capcom. I have a bunch of gamer friends, and none of them are aware of this franchise. Shame..
I loved this game. I remember buying blue moon at my local kmart when i was 14. And it reminded me so much of pokemon i was hooked. Being 29 now, it took me a while but i now own every copy of the battle network games. I miss the early 2000s so much
2:37 In the MMBN world, The Net is basically like Pokémon are in their world. It pervades every facet of life in Electopia (and the other countries), and the entire culture revolves around and depends on it.
I love the battle network games, and 2 and 3 are definitely the highlights of the series. But if we ever get Legacy Collection, I really hope they let us toggle random battles on and off
The Legacy Collection is finally coming, but there's no way they'd remove random encounters as they are vital to the game, but it would be nice if they were disabled during critical sections, such as when doing a puzzle in Cyberworld (e.g. finding invisible bats with sonar in BN 4)
@@HeroSword_P the biggest reason why I think it should give you the option to turn it off is how annoying it is when you have to trudge through so many zones full of Super weak enemies just to get to where you need to go. I remember it being a pain in the ass in the late and post games
16:05 Enzan -> えんさん -> 炎山 -> fire mountain It’s a pun taking advantage of how most kanji can stand in for different sounds while still communicating a singular set of ideas
That "out of 6" at the end was both hilarious and insidious. Nice video, thanks for the content. Also, I save stated and used walkthroughs to hell and back in the electric area. I was almost done... But then my rom got wiped by my cleaning software and I don't want to relive the electric area.
Rewatching this after beating BN1 in the Legacy collection LET'S GO! (also, about Chaud's name, "Enzan" doesn't LITERALLY mean fire mountain, but it is written with the Kanjis 炎山 which in on'yoji (the chinese-inhereted pronunciation of a Kanji) makes it "enzan". So it's more like FLAMEING mountain than Fire Mountain (also Kazan is the word for Volcano too)
15:44~16:08 The Japanese actually put their family names first, where as we Americans put our given names first. So "Ijuin" is actually his family name and "Enzan" is his given name.
Thank you for making this video!! As a kid I never completed the teacher terrorist part so it’s nice to get a full plot synopsis. Also I really love your humor and sarcasm when describing the game. I did subscribe and look forward to more content
in regards to Chaud's japanese name Enzan when written with"演算" is translated as "computing" and while not directly related the word Enzanshi (演算子) which shares the above kanji translates to "operator" which i think makes more sense since thats literally what he is in regard to Protoman in the series. As for his first name Ijuin (伊集院)....well it doesnt seem to translate into anything at all whether you try and translate the romanized spelling or the kanji spelling so ummm yea, thats really fucking weird. But anyway i hope that helped with the translation of Enzan atleast.
I don't know about Chaud's japanese name, but a way to connect the two (calculate and fire) would be the "HCF" command/joke/legend of imputing a command to halt a CPU and/or make it go through many busses and heat up. It was referred as "Halt and Catch Fire"... sort of a "calculate until you burn" so maybe if that legend got to Japan then it'd make sense.
This was one of my favorite game series on the GBA and SP. So much nostalgia and fond memories. Kinda breaks my heart there hasn't been anything new in a while and that they don't have a mobile game or real PET where you can have your own NAVI 😔
17:00 Actually the encounter rate in the fire battle network game is 100% consistent. It's just that sliding along counts as taking steps. They are just put off until you have control back.
Ok so i went back and checked what Wily's plan was it wasn't just to hijack nukes, but hijack nukes and point them at another country called Nation R to then start a war. I guess if you assume R is for russia or some russia standin i guess that makes sense
When I played through BN1 last year and got to the life virus I had like 8 hero swords in my folder so the fight was an absolute joke for me. I just sliced and diced to victory in like 3 seconds.
This first Game really stuck with me. The Battery Puzzle was insanely nervewrecking. I hit that A Button so fast to recharge the Battery and safe my friend. Damn, I was a teen when I found the first one in a Thrift store. Usually I am not into Megaman Games, but Battle Network sounded so cool and it did not dissapoint.
So I didnt heed your advice and played 1 anyway, mostly because I wanted to beat Elecman’s stage. I had an even worse time than what you had warned me about. My game didn’t process an HP upgrade and so I was locked out my 100% which I didnt realize until 60 hours in. Then I couldnt get Bass to trigger and died. I could have easily just gone back, but after weeks of frustration and mind numbing grinding, I was just broken.
you say that, but when I first started playing this series, Fireman would absolutely demolish me. I've even developed a fear of him because of how hard he was wrecking me
Man, this game was ambitious, but it really needed the refinements that the later games had. I started playing in Battle Network 3, so you can imagine how strange it was for me to go back and try this game later. Especially with the final boss going down like a chump.
Someone recently (pretty sure it was after this video came out) someone in Florida tried hacking a town's water supply into being deadly. Luckily someone noticed before it could work.
I love Battle Network's "NetPunk" sort of style. I miss when the idea of the internet was so new that it was basically magic, like SteamPunk before it.
Yahoot: We're having some funding problems, too... Me, pausing the video: *WAIT, WHO IS FUNDING THEM!?!?!?!* Also, I find it funny to say the virus encounters are the easiest in the series because of the regenerating HP, because I have the complete opposite opinion that a few types are insanely HARD because they justify the HP regen by- *sees the Jellies doing 200 damage* That. That right there.
Note: Ryuenjin from Megaman X4 means Dragon Flame Blade (Ryu En Jin), but none of these word parts mean what you'd think based on traditional Japanese translation. Japanese is notoriously difficult for English translation because it's not one of the Romantic languages, meaning it's not based in Latin. And since Japan has had dozens of variations of Japanese throughout hundreds of districts, regions, governments, and dialects over the years, some of which are more or less similar to it's source languages of Chinese and ancient Korean, and others which are basically just local farmer talk...yeah, pretty much any word can mean anything. The version of Japanese usually used for nerdy things like YuGiOh, Video Games, and Anime refers to dragons as Ryu, often refers to flame as En or An, and while I've never heard of a blade or sword being called Jin before, Jin can be used as a type of suffix to describe action, kind of like an Adverb or sorts, so... Ryu is probably based on an old Japanese family name, a family that was associated with dragons. En is almost certainly based on En, the Albanian God of Fire, often depicted in Japanese media as Agni, a Hindu God of Fire.
The whole sharing damage syncing thing being considered a risk seems much less wild considering the direction the games went with the whole singularity data/reality blending stuff that eventually gets explored. It was kind of funny for me though, I saw this game at wallmart as a kid and wanted to buy it but the price was wrong because someone accidentally stocked it in from of BN 2 which was inexplicably cheaper. So I bought 2 instead and started from there and never actually played this one.
My favourite battle network since it was my first. Also my first megaman game i rage quit as I was close to getting hub style having S on every enemy including bass, except gutsman because it tracks your last score and not your highest score.
3:30 That it stands so extremely seperate both lore wise and gameplay wise makes it better I feel. No convoluted continuity or anything. I had never even heard of megaman before I bought the BN games. Yet that wasn't an issue in the slightest.
Fun tip, hopefully it doesn't get patched in the remake, you can dodge the Jelly's attack (wave) by backing up and going forward, instead of using a panel out chip.
