One of my favorite solos!
I just love David Lindley’s playing on this wonderful song. I play Lap Steel as well, and always try to emulate steel sounds in my electric playing. This lesson will show you how to play the first solo. Lots of A major Pentatonic ideas here and a great way to work on your vibrato skills.
Please enjoy and let me know what you think!
Best,
Jack

Thanks Mike! There actually no real amp involved. It’s a Kemper Profiler. It’s a simulation or recording of a real amp, in this case a Dumble clone. To my ears it sounds and feels amp like vs other direct recording solutions. It has a built in noise gate. That, plus my habit of rolling down the volume when I’m not playing is why it’s so polite. Glad you like the lessons! Spread the word! What else are you into?

Freakin' awesome solo. Your technique is amazing. Your ability to sound like Lindley's lap steel reminds me of Eric Johnson figuring out how to make his strat sound line a Japanese Koto.

@@CJ77771 Hi, Just plugged into a Kemper Profiler. So in the real world it’s a cable into this one box. There’s actually no real amp involved. It’s a simulation or recording of a real amp, in this case a Dumble clone. To my ears it sounds and feels amp like vs other direct recording solutions. Some onboard FX are being used. Hall Reverb and a little delay. A smidge of (5%) mild chorus as well as a little compression. Most of the sound is in the left hand techniques; Vibrato,Bending & Sliding. Right hand picking pressure and the artful use of hammering into notes occasionally is pretty important too. The amp and FX contribute to the tone and help that last little bit. Look for a sound that sags a little. That bit of compression is what I look for when I’m shooting for this sound. The steel has great sustain so this helps mimic that aspect a bit. Focus on the timing and accents within the lines and you’ll be off and running in no time. Best, Jack

These are 10s and yep...it can get a little hard on the fingertips when learning a bend heavy bit like this. That said I think ultimately 10s are the right gauge (for me) for this tune... Thank you for the kind comment!

Every live version of Lindley I've heard is completely different. This is obviously the album version. MUSE Concert,BBC 1978, and every bootleg recording I've heard him play on is always improvised. Original cat.

Wow! Soloing on a strat, instead of a lap steel. Kudos!!! Spot on with the notes AND the tone. Wow. After many amps, my Boss Nextone Stage can get in the ballpark of your tone, too. Have you ever used a Boss Dyna Drive to get that dynamic jump, like a Dumble?? Went to subscribe, AND I WAS ALREADY SUBSCRIBED ❗️🌭 I’ll be reviewing this video about David Lindley a lot

I use a Kemper Amp profiler. The profile is from Top Jimi. The amp profiled is a Ceriatone copy of a Dumble. I’m using a little chorus and even less compression in addition to reverb and delay. All the FXs are built in to the Kemper and are tweaked by me to taste.

Hi Jack, Hope you are doing well! Can u suggest how to get this steel guitar tone? What pick ups are u using? Also what do I include in the preset so I can get a similar tone on my fractal AX8? We chatted once before but cant fin our dialogue. Single coil pickups I have don't get this tone. Thanks so much!!
@jacksnax4guitar460
@jacksnax4guitar460 3 года назад
The main thing is to have a tone control on the bridge pickup. Roll it all the way down, and then bring it up until the top end starts to sound defined. My pickups are Dimarzio virtual vintage. NMB model names are heavy blues, blues and solo. I’m using a “Dumble” profile (ceriatone top jimi) and a little compression, delay and chorus. Plenty of reverb. Most of this is in the timing, vibrato and accuracy of your bends.

@jacksnax4guitar460

I don’t think I’d be able to get the finger vibrato and hold down the bender at the same time. I’ve never owned a B bender guitar but have one in the works. The thing I’m always chasing with steel emulations is getting the note in tune and then adding vibrato from below the target note, rather than fretting it and adding vibrato above. Sideways vibrato, glissandos/slides and 1/2 step bends into the target note are the best techniques I’ve found.

Amazed at your lap steel tone and technique on a Strat! Can you help me get the tone you have? What amp settings and pedal(s) are you using? Thanks Dean K
@jacksnax4guitar460
@jacksnax4guitar460 11 месяцев назад
Read the comments for answers? There’s a pretty in depth reply. Mostly it’s bridge pickup with the tone rolled waaay down into a bright overdriven amp.
