That fingerpicking is so beautiful. I developed ALS not that long ago (I'm 43 now) and miss playing guitar. I have muscle pain / tremors so, I can't really play anymore. I don't know how much time I have left in this world but, this song always makes me feel calm / happy. My wife is here and my kids so, that is a blessing as well and, they mean everything to me. Whoever reads this, always enjoy life in the moment. You just don't know what the future holds sometimes.
So sorry to hear that. Playing music releases so much endorphins and takes your mind off of everything else. I hope you will always at least be able to play some music. Maybe just a melody and a bass line or Maybe keyboard? It’s sad that you can’t do what you love.
@johndelconte9915 I haven't been able to play good but, I keep trying. Listening to music has been my big thing now since I can't play. That does seem to help a lot. Ty
Totally amazing. That really tripped me out first learning that, because I thought it was a Nico song. It took me a long time to get into him, being young-ish and into whatever weird shit. I just thought he was the "Running on Empty" guy. But he's one of my favorites, now. Not just because of the Nico song, but when I read that it was actually his song, I became an instant fan. A while back I did some mushrooms and realized something funny about his song Rosie that really pulled me out of a really bad trip, it was so funny and amazing. Jackson Brown rules.
Possibly the most beautiful song ever recorded the electric guitar tone is lovely this is an incredible song I come back to it often nicos delivery is perfect don't stop your dreaming.
Jackson Browne & Gregg Allman, was the best of friends... Jackson Browne wrote this song at16 yrs. Of age... Thanks too the both of them!!!! God bless the both of them !!!! Richard Bishop!!!! Spartanburg SC,!!!!
He had a drug problem and was a domestic abuser. It took a while for me to listen again. What a waste of time. Glad you got to enjoy the show. Thank you for sharing it.
People who dislike Nico's vocals probably don't get the whole "chanteuse" tradition and wouldn't "get" Marlene Dietrich or Hildegard Knef either...But Nico went waaay beyond the cafe confines of that genre as her later work THE MARBLE INDEX, DESERTSHORE, THE END et al. prove. However, the last thing I'm suggesting to the haters is they seek out those classic records. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't GET them either.
Gregor, beautifully said. I've only had a touching acquaintance with the chanteuse tradition, through snippets of recordings of Marlene Dietrich, but I respect and aknowledge it. There is a poignancy to Nico's vocals in this recording I cannot put my finger on, but its tone expresses a sadness and resignation that I suspect many feel today.
It's not unlike hearing Maryanne Faithful singing As Tears Go By, although of course this Gal has a distinct Scandinavian/ Northern European dialect. This is typical of the Pop music of 'those days'
Wow! Nico really was beautiful. Gwyneth Paltrow is her spitting image when she was young. Hollywood should make movie about Nico starring Gwyneth. Nico's life would make an incredible film, albeit very sad.
It's funny to hear Jackson Browne say that having having him play electric guitar rather then acoustic guitar on this recording was Andy Warhol's idea. Because it really was a good idea.
Striking how Nico inspires so much violent dislikes. Many people are insensitive to that voice, its straightforwardness, the way it is poised between singing and talking, its low range, its very original and human presence. (Warhol had some taste, apparently).
As I just posted in another response. Nico's voice MAKES THIS SONG. As well as the inclusion of the string instruments that Jackson Browne mocks in the spoken introduction. Her voice adds emphases, depth of feeling, and sincerity that no other version has.
My wife and I named our oldest daughter Nico. She is a treasure. Now we are old but happy. If you do not know Nico and the Velvet Underground. We pity you.
great video !! wow. one of those songs, the best songs of our times. were those all jackson browne lyrics? i never heard them in any of his performances, mostly have only heard what's on the (awesome)studio record. thanks for sharing.
so... I know this German woman named Nika... I think it's funny.. can't be this lady...my Nika never speaks English... even though I know most German people are fluent in English... I practice German.. and try German slang out.. in case anyone else thinks run on German words are entertaining.. I do... ousgeflip... no translation needed... mir gehts serh viel ousgeflip.... it's an outstanding word for anyone's vocabulary... expressive... spelled wrong.. I can't spell German... it's phonetic, if you understand the rules... I don't.. seat of the pants.. conversation... and a lot of questions... thanks for sharing this sir.. Niko has a voice worth listening to.. and I actually understand her... far out man Wonderschönegirl
There was also a picture of Woodie Guthrie with the words "This machine kills fascists" on his guitar. Pretty ironic considering there are stories from those that knew her regarding a propensity for making anti-Semitic and anti-black comments. On a somewhat related note, Woodie Guthrie was a communist and communism has taken far more lives than fascism, so he doesn't fit with Dr. King either.
@Tones4me1 JB's acoustic version from Vol1 is (for me) the definitive version. Just my opinion, but I think Nico's singing is dreadful. If this was the only version I'd ever heard I'd say "that song sucked". St Vincent (Annie Clark) covers this original version and it is absolutely wonderful. You tube it...
Nico (Christa Päffgen) really butchered this (great) song. (To compare her with M. Dietrich or H. Knef is like comparing Trump with Abraham Lincoln or JFK, an insult.)
