Jackson Browne- channelling songs from a place noone can see or understand.. He is a religion if you dont have one, a revival when you need one, a redemption for all who suffer or need to release what they hold tightest.. Listen, learn, love - one of a kind soul.
feb 1974 hitchhiked with my girlfriend and little sister in a blizzard from Syracuse to Cortland to attend a show that was just freakin incredible...linda Ronstadt opened for Jackson and this was shortly after late for the sky was released...they opened the doors early due to the cold and that little college gym became a cozy living room filled with the most moving and emotional music.....the band had david lindley and doug haywood and was just so spot on and thrilling...so glad to hear this clip and be reminded of those so much earlier and innocent times and how great music endures and remains relevant to our lives.....
I grew up in So California and worked at Anaheim Stadium. Saw every group for free who played the stadium which included JB. I never tire of JB, Linda Ronstadt, Eagles, Rod Stewart. The list is long. Great time to be a teenager.
So many artists (Browne, Don Henley, James Taylor to name a few) pay tribute to Souther's contribution to their own success. Truly an amazing talent who's all about the music instead self-promotion. His 'You're Only Lonely' will haunt you! Thank you J.D.!
The Eagles history cd shows quite a bit of Jackson and I guess he was just one of that crowd. Eagles, Jackson Browne, Linda Rhonsteadt high on mushrooms up in the CA high desert, wow! What a trip!
Souther was Glenn Frey's roommate when they lived upstairs from Jackson Brown in the early 70s, pre-Eagles. Glenn and JD first heard Take it Easy in its unfinished form through the floor from Jackson's basement apartment. Glenn pestered Jackson so much about using that song that he let Frey finish the last "flatbed ford" verse. I've heard that it was Randy Meisner that opposed Souther being an early member of the Eagles. Not sure about that, though.
@@intassage Souther was real good at community college things and from four of his albums I have are acoustic shows of a few of those colleges. I'm sure he doesn't HAVE to do that anymore and MY "Old Hippie" days have pretty much left me with Pure Prairie League in their "Bustin' Out" days. Hmmm? So you are a doctor. I am an old VN vet Corpsman. Now I am a wore out paramedic! (G)
Dear God. I am so grateful to testify that my very first concert was Jackson’s Running on Empty Tour at Boutwell Auditorium in 1977. Waddy ❤️. This song is like a baptist hymn. My true love is JD. Linda took me there with Faithless Love. Never looked back. Don’t forget the best ones!
+ Robert Bartlett Yes indeed my man. You talk about under appreciated. This is a prime example. He has helped write so many important songs ( which I will list if I have too) and has added perfect harmony to so many songs . He is the unspoken hero of Southern California music.
I would play this song while driving Alone in Sarasota.Fla. . i was there to viist my Mom in the Nursing home, my husband remained in New York. I was gad to be free, yet I well knew "that hollow sound of my own steps in flight" Or I was pulling out of the driveway, fleeing relentless damaging rant of words, abuse. While alone and Safe, Fountain of Sorrow, had me in tears as I KNEW the 'Truth'. I had to say it's over, admit to myself that the spontaneous barrage o lies was wasting my Life. Ti was years waiting for our daughter' college graduaton. After 33 years, Jackson's words , told me what U had to DO!
@@paulrollings5291 when you promise forever, meaning it, and then your perfect lover changes his/her mind. In the end, you learn to keep compassion in sight for the love that is gone and for yourself... and life moves on, you with it.
I think he looks sick here, like he has a fever, but he doesn’t want to disappoint. I believe I read somewhere that he actually was ill for this performance, and J.D. knew it. Maybe I’m wrong.
I’m listening and wondering if I would have gotten through some rough times without this music. One thing rings true for me and it’s that this music more than likely saved this listener life. Sweet solace. Peace to you Jackson Browne.
In my top 5 greatest songs ever written...who can use the word 'perfect' 3 times in a row and not wear it out? Bonnie Raitt, "Turn down the lights. turn down the bed, turn down these voices...inside my head.." They don't make them like these anymore...
I totally agree. The first line of the song is the best ever written Looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer I was taken by a photograph of you. I really wish I had written that. I play the Bonnie Raitt song for my classes and then ask them to analyze it. I myself have always thought that the message was that the act of loving is in and of itself its own reward.
I have been listening to JD Souther since the Black Rose.lp.when I found out about the HOT DAMN Brothers, I looked everywhere for Albums that may be out there. I had books old musics books with their Composition. Those were stolen.
@@kathleenhendrickson5036 Sorry to hear that. What albums/cds are you looking for? I have 4 or five. Two are acoustic concerts. Community college kind of stuff. TYhis song always made me cry. My ex-wife had a suicide kind of problem and I kept from doing that. The mistake I made was I mixed help with love and two kids got born. I haven't seen her in 40 years I guess. She's still kicking. (G) Love the song. Wish I could write like that. I'm always missing the Souther, Browne, Eagles, and Linda Rohnstadt time in the LA/Hollywood area. I guess it was a long-haired old hippie kind of thing
These artists, especially Jackson, were probably old souls and now their external selves are just catching up. Music and the emotions that fuel us are eternal. Just bought and listened to J.D.'s "Home by Dawn." Enjoyed it tremendously, especially the two tracks with Linda Ronstadt. Heard her harmonizing in my head as I watched this.
Seeing this warms my heart Because these guys are not getting younger and they are musical heroes of mine and millions of others and it is just so nice to see and hear them together one more time.
"Fountain of Sorrow, fountain of light, you've heard that hollow sound, of your own steps in flight..." Pure classic gold from Mr. Jackson Browne, whose music I have loved for 46 years. Rock on, Jackson!!
Such raw sentiments, such healing, joyful music. Does this man comprehend how much he has given to us all? Bless your heart Jackson and thank you, thank you.
@@julierood1228 Do you know how Ry began playing the guitar? If you don’t , it’s on Wikipedia or I would love retelling the story as It is one of the most heart rendering stories in music.
He had the most beautiful voice, but he often didn't let it out, for some reason. Linda Ronstadt once said he was her favorite vocalist(and songwriter)...I guess she'd know. I saw him perform the summer after he finally had a big hit on the radio(Only Lonely)...and he sounded really good during that concert...his voice so clear and true.
Good on ya Mr Browne.. great song ... keep these classics alive forever please.. because so much music today is disposable. Your songs from The Pretender, Running on Empty, Late For the Sky, Hold Out,, are some of the most sensitive and organics songs ever. They hold up beautifully because they are honest, and lyrically universal and philosophical. Of course you had great players along to help shape it.. bringing in shades or rock, country, folk, blues, gospel and classical. Your gifts are appreciated.
And Saturate Before Using! The man wrote the songs of my youth, made me fall in love with love songs at 14. DC, I did not lie. The truth can be easily seen in pictures of H & M ❤
Jackson Browne.....your voice is still from another world......too good to be from this one....you made me cry then and now seeing you live I still cry......you are amazing
No Doubt a tearjerker of a song, pulls on the heartstrings of past Love. I discovered this song long after I was introduced to JB when Running On Empty was released.

Yes, JD Souther is a class act and more. Many of us know he was a close friend of Glen Frey and Don Henley and helped them write many of their Eagles songs. When Glen asked JD to join The Eagles he politely declined saying they did not need another singing guitar player. Yes he very underrated but definitely a legend.
GEEZ, Peter Berger--(or should I say Petter Berger?) You rave about the Eagles as if you know them personally, but TWICE you misspell Glenn Frey's name in your post!!! It's spelled, G-L-E-N-N-, not G-L-E-N!!! Why should we care about your opinion when you are so unaware of the most basic facts of whom you speak? I'm sorry to blast you on this, but it is too blatant to let slide under the circumstances! Better luck next time. Tony =^,,^=
You could be laughing at me, you've got the right, but you keep on smiling so clear and so bright. This song will go down in history as one of the greatest ever written.. loved you for many many years, JACKSON BROWNE!

This is may be my favorite JB song ever. And because it is one of the best songs ever written, lyric-wise, here it is in its entirety. Looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer I was taken by a photograph of you There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more But they didn't show your spirit quite as true You were turning 'round to see who was behind you And I took your childish laughter by surprise And at the moment that my camera happened to find you There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes Now, the things that I remember seem so distant and so small Though it hasn't really been that long a time What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all Although for a while our path did seem to climb When you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger While the loneliness seems to spring from your life Like a fountain from a pool Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight You've had to hide sometimes, but now you're all right And it's good to see your smiling face tonight Now, for you and me it may not be that hard to reach our dreams But that magic feeling never seems to last And all the future's there for anyone to change, still you know it seems It would be easier sometimes to change the past I'm just one or two years and a couple of changes behind you In my lessons at love's pain and heartache school Where if you feel too free and you need something to remind you There's this loneliness springing up from your life Like a fountain from a pool Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight You've had to hide sometimes, but now you're all right And it's good to see your smiling face tonight Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight You've had to struggle, you've had to fight To keep understanding and compassion in sight You could be laughing at me, you've got the right But you go on smiling so clear and so bright
This album came out when I knew my relationship was coming to an end. This song had great significance, I thought it explained exactly where I was at that time of my life. Although no regrets.
I Have seen Jackson three times! I LOVE all his Tunes! But this one is my very most Favorite! I have been listening to it for 50 years! It's guided me through many a Storm!
First time I see JD Suther here. I know him so well from Eagles. 2 gigs only, I will never forget. And take it easy. Only so can I survive in these crazy world. Thanks for Jackson Browne.
Love, Love, Love Jackson Browne! Both his voice and JD Souther’s voice are still as melodious as ever! God Bless you both for sharing your talents with the world all these many years! We humbly thank you!

Two really great talents of the 70's rock, country rock era, still going strong. Jackson had a great show in Red Rocks in August 2015, I was there, truly a highlight, JD a great back home gig in 2016, nice performance.
Don Felder, Vince Gill, Timothy B Schmit, Herb Pederson, and John David Souther, et al, are all class acts, great musicians, great singers, and excellent songwriters
oh the days...glory days My first concert at 16 at Freeborn Hall at UC Davis was to see him, now I'm 65 and if I have my way one day I'll see him again, and make it my last concert. Started with him, let it end with him.
