Lyrics
Well I looked into a house I once lived in
Around the time I first went on my own
When the roads were as many as
The places I had dreamed of
And my friends and I were one
Now the distance is done and the search has begun
I've come to see where my beginnings have gone
Oh the walls and the windows were still standing
And the music could be heard at the door
Where the people who kindly endured my odd questions
Asked if I came very far
And when my silence replied they took me inside
Where their children sat playing on the floor
Well we spoke of the changes
That would find us farther on
And it left me so warm and so high
But as I stepped back outside
To the grey morning sun
I heard that highway whisper and sigh
Are you ready to fly
And I looked into the faces all passing by
It's an ocean that will never be filled
And the house that grows older and finally crumbles
That even love cannot rebuild
It's a hotel at best, you're here as a guest
You ought to make yourself at home
While you're waiting for the rest
Well I looked into dream of the millions
That one day the search will be through
Now here I stand at the edge of
My embattled illusions
Looking into you
The great song traveler passed through here
And he opened my eyes to the view
And I was among those who called him a prophet
And I asked him what was true
Until the distance had shown
How the road remains alone
Now I'm looking in my life
For a truth that is my own
Well I looked into the sky for my anthem
And the words and the music came through
But words and music will never touch
The beauty that I've seen
Looking into you and that's true

Jackson, who is so good that he’s been a true iconic figure and after 70 years of life and listening, he still hasn’t had many fans spell bound, with his voice and music! Jackson we hope you will play on forever ❤ Thanks for the memories of those years with your music and for being such a wonderful person! 5:54

No truer words could be spoken when I say that Jackson's music has been such a source of comfort to me after my husband unexpectedly died a year ago in September. Never have his words been more poignant, calming, everything they have always been just a bit more needed right now. It seems I have a long road ahead of me and his music will surely be my companion. ✌

There isn't a song that doesn't touch me to my soul, its as though a silent kinship or connection in ny mind has been spoken out loud & put into words that I could never come up with on my own. Jackson does this fir me as though he was tapped into my thougbts. Its explained so simply , im the one that makes it all so complicated & when I hear him sing I then realize im not alone in this world of thought or realty. People say i think too much,, its not that, its just that i over think, I over feel on things that can't be solved in one person or at all. Im just happy that I have a friend that views my thoughts with the same heart, even if he has no idea I exist, I know he does & that causes my calm..

Not that I expect an answer, but... Mr. Browne, are those words tattooed on your heart, etched in your mind, burned into your soul? They are in mine. When your music comes on, wherever I am, I start to sing. And sometimes cry. I believe I was 12 when my oldest brother brought your music into my life. I'm 60 now and so much of my life has been narrated by or reflected in your songs. Thank you for expressing the things I didn't know how to express. Thank you for saying the things I've been afraid to say. God bless you and yours, sir. I am forever grateful.

I just came upon this series of videos and have watched 5 or 6 by now, recalling the soulful music this was then and still is now. At the end of each video, there's an unmistakable twinkle in Jackson's eye, a look, without any bravado, of simply knowing and appreciating his humble contribution to the world.

I even think that those living in my childhood home now (and all of those even before them) do not even have a clue as to the history, and all of the living that went on there long before they moved in. 😪

Oh! How many times this song played on my turntable in my teenage years. Jackson, your words and music have helped me so much throughout my life. I thank you for that and for the hug I asked for and received from you March 17, 1996 (The Township, Columbia, SC). I sent everyone Christmas cards that Christmas with our picture taken that night and the words "Dreams Do Come True"! LOL. Love you...

Jackson - Mr. Browne…Your’s was the first concert I ever attended….Philadelphia, the Spectrum I believe. Mid to late seventies. I have been listening ever since. I just discovered you have this RU-vid channel…and maybe…you read these comments. I just want to THANK YOU..from the bottom of my heart..for your music and what you and it have meant to me over my time on this planet. Love You Man!

Yes, same here, because it is as if he expected them to be crumbling, with a resultant forlorn feeling, and was very pleasantly surprised to find them "still standing".

First saw Jackson at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ, back in the early 70s. He played solo. The response was extremely positive, which seemed to surprise him. He said, "The next time I come back, I'm bringing my band." And he did the next year. I was there for that one, too. He is simply one of the finest songwriters of our generation. Top shelf. Always on the pulse of how it truly is. Personal, social commentary, world view. Has a few equals, but none are better. Jackson's first album is one of my favs ever. All of his work is always so good. (Nice steel work, also, Greg! We just lost Rusty Young, another terrific steel player).

@@rjb7569 That was the very first show (of MANY!) of his that I've been to. Yes, I was living in Union at that time, and was already a big fan of his music. The most ironic thing is that I thought I was the ONLY one in my whole 800+ graduating class of Union High that was into his artistry, and that they were all into ONLY the 'go to' expected usual; Zeppelin, Stones, Doors, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc., etc. But then at the Seton Hall show a year or so after that Capital show, there were MANY of my fellow classmates waiting in line to get into that gym to see him and Linda!! 😁

Thank you so much for your love of those who need someone to stand up for those who are lost, forgotten, at risk of death from evil rulers of the countries where human lives mean nothing. You have never feared standing for what is right. I've been listening to you since 1976. I have seen you so many times in concert. I just love the way your music speaks love and compassion. Thank you for just being a wonderful man who truly has a desire to help others.
