LYRICS:
I'm going to rent myself a house
In the shade of the freeway
I’m going to pack my lunch in the morning
And go to work each day
And when the evening rolls around
I'll go on home and lay my body down
And when the morning light comes streaming in
I'll get up and do it again
Amen
I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
Of some greater awakening
I've been aware of the time going by
They say, in the end it's the wink of an eye
And when the morning light comes streaming in
You'll get up and do it again
Amen
Caught between the longing for love
And the struggle for the legal tender
Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring
And the junkman pounds his fender
Where the veterans dream of the fight
Fast asleep at the traffic light
And the children solemnly wait for the ice cream vendor
Out into the cool of the evening strolls the Pretender
He knows that all his hopes and dreams
Begin and end there
Ah the laughter of the lovers as they run through the night
Leaving nothing for the others but to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams sail out of sight
I'm going find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint by number dreams
And then we'll put our dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We'll get up and do it again
Get it up again
I'm going to be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender
Where the ads take aim and lay their claim
To the heart and the soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy
Though true love could have been a contender
Are you there?
Say a prayer for the Pretender
Who started out so young and strong
Only to surrender

I’m… speechless, with the salty taste of my own tears. I’m 55 now, and was so young when I first heard this song; completely unaware of how much depth and complex meaning is within those lyrics. But today, it hit smack in the middle of my soul. Timeless, and even more beautiful today than it ever was. Thank you Jackson, for your incredible talent and musical gifts that you have shared with us all. 🙏 Much love and gratitude to you from me. ❤️

Back in 2004 I saw Jackson at London Palladium. One voice, one piano/guitar. Spellbinding arrangements that really showed off the quality of songwriting. Along with Townes Van Zandt , Gordon Lightfoot and Richard Ashcroft,he is in the upper echelon of all time great songwriters. Thank you for the magic Jackson.

Jackson, thanks for showing me around your home and parts of Hollyweird back in the 70's. I always loved this song. So much so I remember you telling to me to stop playing it on your piano in your home in the Hollywood Hills...lol. But, seriously, thank you for taking the time to be my friend. I was just back from Vietnam as a Marine and was still trying to adapt to civilian culture. Your selfless generosity is something I'll always be grateful for. I pray you continue to thrive and be healthy, my friend. All the best to you...

Oh don't ever underestimate the pure beauty of your "chops"! Your voice, your music, and your soulful messages and soulful sound continues to soothe my soul. From Tanglewood, Massachusetts and the Boston Garden in 1978 at age 16 to Sedona, Phoenix, Chico, Colorado Springs, Denver, Mesa, Tucson, Santa Fe, Maui, and most recently the Venetian in Las Vegas - your performances inspire and move me to my soul. And in between your concerts, your music and your voice and your messages remain a constant in my life. A comfort. A joy. An inspiration. Through life's beauty and life's crushing blows your music weaves through me in a most spectacular and comforting way. Over the decades and still. Thank you for the beauty you share and the beauty that touches me deeply.

A thousand thanks for this beautiful song. Lyrics from a poet put to music that touches the soul and encapsulates within a few minutes the dilemma we all experience daily. A beautiful compilation of words to explain the dilemma and then a somewhat surprising self-revelation of the choice to pursue money over love. I believe we are all here individually to hopefully have some positive impact on others' lives. Know that you have touched the lives of millions with this particular work. Bravo!

I was 15, just retired this year, seems like yesterday.....I wish we listened to the 'old fogies' back then that told us time flies. We thought we'd be young forever, bullet proof, no fear. Now, we're the 'old fogies' and I tell the young kids to live life, squeeze the juice out of it, because it really is gone in the blink of an eye. We get busy living life and forget to live life. I also started listening to this song in the '70s. I still have the album. I have always very much liked the song but always found the lyrics chilling because of "They say, in the end it's the wink of an eye" and "I'm going to be a happy idiot And struggle for the legal tender". I have frequently offered the same sentiment to my senior prom date (now wife), then today I see my name (minus 1 letter) speak of the same realization ( I also just retired). I love that line, too. I love the way it winds up too, especially the line, "where the ads take aim and lay their claim to the heart and the soul of the spender." "Are you there? Say a prayer for the pretender, Who started out so young and strong only to surrender." This song just makes me die!

I’ve placed great responsibility on your shoulders... you’ve tended to and thus repaired many broken hearts and restored them to being whole again...just by intently listening to your magical music and lyrics. I’m still looking for that elusive house on the freeway, where I rise in the morning and go to work each day...where I can love someone so much that we fill in the colors of our paint by numbers dreams.

Mr Browne's voice has matured to now add the gravitas this song was crying for all along, We just didn't know it. So much more powerful in this iteration. I guess it could be that I'm at the end of my seventh decade that makes me look at it differently. Either way, this is a wonderful version. Thank you.

Wow! Decades after first hearing this it still gives goosebumps. ‘Are You there for the pretender?’. Short answer - yes. At the end of the day we are all pretenders, all doing the best we can, which grace assures is sufficient. Thanks JB for all the years of wisdom and melody.

Jackson is a poet extraordinaire with a vulnerability and honesty that our world will ALWAYS need. I was 25 when this song was released in 1976 and it struck me deeply, bringing to my awareness the many ways in which I had already compromised my goals and self-respect. I'm 72 now and writing poetry that reflects the incredible journeys our 'Baby-Boomer' generation . Jackson remains a powerful muse for me and a 'silent comrade' in the middle of the night when I am writing, crying and seeking comfort from the chaos and darkness of our world today. Thank you, Brother....you are deeply loved and cherished.
