People who say that it is more showmanship than effective you are right. But this CATEGORY of the tournament is for showmanship not effectiveness.

Guys keep in mind most if not all of these guys and gals performing are incredibly gifted in "effective" martial arts as well.

I wish to one day fly over to America and compete here at least once, i specialize in nunchucks. But still have a long way to go in regards to skill level. If i am to make it, I'd attend class AA and compete against the worlds best.

Been in martial arts for over 30 years. I've seen "sport" karate evolve into this...whatever you call it. This should be a category called Extreme Baton Twirling for Color Guard enthusiasts. The martial arts in this type of performance (used to be called "creative forms" and no you couldn't win tournaments or grand championships with them, it was for fun) has been so watered down that the gymnastics and twirling are all they consist of. What little martial technique I saw was average in a few parts at best. All that being said, it does take hard work, skill, and practice to accomplish the performance seen here so I won't begrudge the young man or condemn his performance based on what it is. What it is however is not martial arts to me and that's my opinion of it.
@SantoHanno
@SantoHanno Год назад
That’s not fair. Colorguard has a direct and traceable lineage to actual martial arts traditions and requires a fair bit of upper body strength. Whatever this is has neither.

Yours is by FARRRRRR the best comment that I've read on these types of weapons forms. 90% of the folks who read your comment are going to think that you're a hater, you're jealous, etc...but that's not what I perceive at all. I couldn't have phrased things any better than you did and these forms (as you've said) should be in a special category. They should be acknowledged and appreciated because they do require skill, precision, timing coordination, etc... but it's not real Martial Arts because 80% of it contains no real fighting application.

As someone who has trained for more than 20 years in traditional and non-traditional martial arts, I can safely say that whatever he was doing had nothing to do with real martial arts. It's likely not his fault. He's a kid listening to his parents and his "teacher." When he gets older, I hope he can put aside his ego and go train with real masters of the martial arts. Go spend a few years in Japan where the teachers couldn't give two squirts whether you can twirl a fiberglass bo like batton. I've spent several years overseas having my ego pummeled into submission, then built back up as I learned what true martial arts are.

I'm talking about traditional karate, the Japanese way. As in Goju Ryu or Shotokan or Wado Ryu ect. Seeing as Karate means open hand closed fist, there's no reason for "traditional bo" or any kind of weapons. If you want to learn weapons go do Ju Jitsu or iado.
@cefkungfupipewelder1568
@cefkungfupipewelder1568 2 года назад
Most shotokan places offer kobudo classes as well, traditional Okinawan weapons to compliment as an extension of the body. jujitsu doesn’t offer weapons, it is more of grappling and joint lock techniques however iaido does.
