Jaco at this point in time was going through a difficult period in his life. His health was failing, family falling apart, but yet he could still play such angelic music.. I always have tears in my eyes watching this guy express himself in this video alongside with Toots.. Jaco Pastorius for ever🙏
Bro! This album was a masterpiece. Three Views was written for Ingrid, his Indonesian wife. John and Mary, his two children from a previous marraige. When I listen to Three views, i always get a bit sad. He was in love with a beautiful woman, which is supposed to be one of the happiest times in your life, but he was fighting these mental demons. Joe Zawinul, one of Jaco's biggest pseudo critics(because nobody could hate Jaco, he could frustrate you but nobody could hate Jaco) loved this song
The tormented lives of artists will never be fully characterized in words. They are simply too connected with all that presents to them as modern reality - the failings & fortunes - the cup runneth over. We will miss them terribly & also celebrate them in their glories, for that is the only good way to 'remember' their arts.
Jaco was a hero of mine growing up. I didn't know back then that I would end up a homeless drug addict eventually too. Luckily I pulled out of it. Viva Jaco
Not in the Jazz world (Toots)… actually also not in the pop world (Stevie)…. Actually not in the folk/country/blues world (too much to name 😅). Actually it’s not underrated lol. The term underrated is overrated
Pastorius looks like a happy little boy genius, and toots looks like there is no place in the world he'd rather be than on stage with Jaco, playing this brilliant and moving tune. Seeing this great time for these two makes me even sadder about the tragedy of Jaco Pastorius.
Jaco was so much more than a bass player, musically…and this is a shining example of his compositional ability, absolutely beautiful piece. The chord movements, the melody and overall breezy vibe….it’s a masterpiece of harmony. He is greatly missed.
Jesus, this is the most beautiful thing in the history of music. Jaco's face is wonderful to behold. Surely he saw the genius in others that could match his own.
I didn't know that Jaco could play the piano as well, and I really love the expressions on his face, as he is apparently really enjoying this duo with Toots. Great moment of music !
Such a poignant image--the old master and the young tragic genius whose days are numbered. Nothing could take this shining moment from them, not even Jaco's sad decline and passing just two years later.
@@OldRunt he explains it very well in the comment. Just re read it a few times and put in some minimal effort and I think you'll answer your own question.
@@TempSFugit-kk1dk Yes, brevity is the spirit of wit. Did he nail it with that comment. Definitely one of the best critical definitions of a phenomenon.
+dave l. underwood i think it takes an outside mind to see this. Jewish genius and a mad musician with a heroin problem. 2 musical madmen attacking Jazz. fuck that's outta my league :P
reminds me of their concert in Osaka, Japan with Jako´s Big Band in 1981-2 or so...the crowd was very polite and quiet until Toots came out, sat on a bar stool and blew the top off the place and the crowd went wild. The band picked up on the energy and he and Jako burned the place down... in the end, the audience stood for 20min and wouldnt let them leave...unreal, just masters of the magical...
Jaco was smiling so big during this number! That's a truly wonderful musician to derive such great pleasure from performing is the sign of a truly dedicated musical talent. He was a great man.
Toots has played with everyone from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis to Chrysler commercials but when I saw him on stage in Holland some years ago he said the person he enjoyed playing with most was Jaco. He said Jaco had great love and respect and would call him ‘Papa’ This video certainly shows that special connection. Rest In Peace (BTW, check out a great new version of this song by Thierry Eliez - actually does it justice!)
Imagine the things Jaco could have done... Makes me so sad to even consider it for a moment. How fortunate we are that he graced us with performances like this. His mark on the jazz idiom is absolutely massive, and beyond comparison among jazz/fusion bassists. What an absolute visionary and genius.
At 2'50 Jaco starts playing the DX7 and it makes me think of what went through in their heads. So 1- Jaco stands and starts playing the DX; 2- He looks Toots with this "check out this sound" look; 3- Toots looks like "What are you doing man?"; 4- then Jaco is "I know man, it's sounding bad... sorry for that" and goes back to the piano; 5- Jaco leaves that behind and at 3'15 he is smiling again. Amo esses caras!
Jaco was a great talent, lost too soon to the ravages that befall those who become mired in the "escape" of drugs. He is missed. This particular piece is quite pleasant to listen to. May his rise and fall be a lesson to all those who have talent but are lured by other sirens.
O Man, look at the sheer joy and delight in Jaco's face and generally disposition. Sadly missed and a true musician. This piece is amongst my favorite standards. Awesome all-round performance.
I always imagined Jaco only played bass, I saw a video of him playing a Yamaha DX7, and playing piano at the end of the bass lesson video produced by Jaco. But this gem I only found now... And the most interesting thing, even with all the restlessness I had playing bass and pushing the instrument to the limit, in this performance he respected the music as the basis for the dear Toots.
Why have I never come across this before? My day is wonderful all of a sudden. Two of the greatest musicians ever to walk the planet playing a classic tune - does it get any better?
Man.............what a talent! This composition and performance IS.... just beautifully heart wrenching...I don't know how else to say it.... And Toots knew it too just the equal value of talent of Toots on that harmonica is a sheer delight to watch and hear at the same time. No heavy effects ......just piano and Toots with maybe a little reverb!!!! Facial expressions are totally outrageous to witness! This should be ................THREE BILLION VIEWS OF A SECRET!
Such a beautiful version of a truly classic song. To think that in only a few short years after this Jaco would be gone. If you ever get the chance to read of the bio books on Jaco please do. It's certainly an eye opener in the behind the scenes world of Jaco and the sad downward spiral he was on at the time of this recording. We lost a master when we lost Jaco but thankfully his legacy lives on in his music.
Simple and Complex at the same time...humble and compassionate ending...Absolutely Beautiful!!!...my replay button is stuck intentionally...My morning song from now on.
One of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. Viva Toots! Still with us. I discovered this album in college when I used the practice room that a guitar major used. He had a whole bunch of albums in there. Said I could listen to them. This Jaco one was the first one I put on. Knocked me out. I'd sit in the dark and listen to this over and over. So cool to see Jaco playing piano real time. Wow! Thanks for posting this.
Saw both these guys perform in NYC in 1983! Incredible! This song still haunts me to this day in recognizing the genius of Jaco! No one will ever surpass this guys talent!
I have no words... Meeting of two beautiful souls... You can feel their union through what is their life : music 🎵🎶 Didn't know Jaco was that good on playing piano, what a talented musician, sensitive artist, he was too good for this world! Thank you Mr Pastorius, your music will live forever... Miss you so much, love you still ❤️
BACK FOR REFLECTION, INTROSPECTION & INSPIRATION: O Man, look at the sheer joy and delight in Jaco's face and generally disposition. Sadly missed and a true musician. This piece is amongst my favorite standards. Awesome all-round performance.
Two absolute geniuses. This is a flawless, brilliant performance with everything that Jaco brings as a composer and his musicianship. I met Jaco at the Beacon Theater on NYC Westside and it is a treasured memory even 30 years later.
These two had a connection early on that never waivered, still very strong through the music in spite of Jaco's issues....lots of LOVE from these two amazing artists!! Amazing clip!
I totally agree with justJunya - loved it, never saw it previously. Thinking so much about Jaco Pastorius lately - watching, reading, listening - really something so special about him that touches so many, even all these years later. Precious soul, wished I known him!
