Regarding the quote about callings and responsibilities, just like everything else, I am sure a person's responsibility due to mistakes and stumbles that affect another person's choices, I am sure there is a HUGE distinction between unintentional and "on-purposes".

Thank you both for taking the time to make these. I just found your stuff yesterday. I use a couple of other podcast/RU-vid channels for my studies of CFM. Your approach is so unique and really speaks to me. I love how the scriptures are the "Star". Great work! I can only imagine how much time these must take to study, research and produce. Thank you for taking the time to share!

Maybe why we say I enjoyed your talk is because it did touch us but we don’t really know what to say but want to tell them that talk was meaningful to us. That applies to me. 🥴

Sam has a meaning in Egyptian as Chap or Boy. Not to be demeaning to him but it is the same as they would call someone who has a learning disability. I have seen men and women baring strong testimonies of the Gospel and yet they do have a disability. I don't think he's left out except to say that he may have a disability that could mean he couldn't be called to the work. This is according to my Arabic professor who received a PhD from Luxor University in Arabic.

I love Elder Oaks, and I get his point, but I must say that I really DO "enjoy" the talks given by the General Authorities! I enjoy hearing every word and I enjoy their messages; I find joy in all they say, even admonitions to improve myself give me joy. And I bet you agree with me, too!

I absolutely agree although I see his point too. If I am only entertained, I've missed the message. But I have been challenged, inspired, and chastised in conference talks and can still say I enjoyed them.

There are tribes of Nephites, Lamanites, and Lemuelites throughout the BofM, as well as Jacobites and Josephites (Lehi's younger sons born in the desert), there are never Samites in the Book of Mormon, could mean that Sam "only had daughters

If Sam was intelligent enough to gain a testimony through Nephi's testimony, I think that cancels out any learning problems. I have heard someone say that they thought Sam had all girls and so his posterity is somewhat ended and that's why he is not mentioned again.

The traditional interpretation of Jacob 2 verse 30 as an exception to monogamy is not in harmony with the context of Jacob's message and especially the preceeding seven verses to verse 30 are all being ignored. It is an excellent example of proof texting and logical assumptions based on the apparent ambiguity of what God commands and what are the "things" they otherwise hearken to in verse 30. Here is the most accurate interpretation of verse 30 based on the context of the preceeding seven verses. Jacob 2 :30 "For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people;... (For if I am going to raise up seed unto me [righteous people] see vs 25, I will command my people to keep the laws of monogamy)see vs 27,29. ...otherwise they shall hearken unto these things." (I must give the commandment for monogamy to my people, otherwise they shall hearken unto these abominations of polgamy and other whoredoms. See vs 23,24,28)

THANK YOU!! I'm still surprised how many members have read Jacob with their eyes and hearts completely shut. No wonder Jacob says we do not understand scripture. Polygamy was never commanded by God. The real author of that disgusting, perverted practice was Cain thus the devil so.... Not God

@@StompMom5 I couldn't understand verse 30 until recently, even though I stopped believing in polgamy four years ago. It amazing though, once you see it you can't unsee it.

There are multiple witnesses of the Lord calling polygamy an abomination. Repeatedly throughout the scriptures he tells us that he does not change his doctrine. James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Alma 7:20 I perceive that it has been made known unto you, by the testimony of his word, that he cannot walk in crooked paths; neither doth he vary from that which he hath said; neither hath he a shadow of turning from the right to the left, or from that which is right to that which is wrong; therefore, his course is one eternal round. Speaking directly to us today, Mormon 8:33 warns “Why have ye transfigured the holy word of God, that ye might bring damnation upon your souls?” In Mosiah 11:2 we learn of a second king who “did cause his people to commit sin, and do that which was abominable in the sight of the Lord” because of the practice of having “many wives and concubines”. Again in Jacob we have reference with emphasis to a second king causing his people to err: Jacob 1:15 And now it came to pass that the people of Nephi, under the reign of the second king, began to grow hard in their hearts, and indulge themselves somewhat in wicked practices, such as like unto David of old desiring many wives and concubines, and also Solomon, his son. There is a story repeated over and over throughout the Book of Mormon and even the Bible about a people who thought they were righteous (1 Nephi 17:22; Alma 21:6; Luke 18:9) but because of pride they were unwilling to learn and repent of their false traditions, and it led to their destruction. They chose to accept evil as good because they trusted in their leaders over the word of God in the scriptures. 2 Nephi 28:12 Because of pride, and because of false teachers, and false doctrine, their churches have become corrupted, and their churches are lifted up; because of pride they are puffed up. If Book of Mormon writers could only include 100th part of what they saw, what did they include what they did? Nephi told us to liken the scriptures to our day. The scriptures would be of little worth to us if their intent was merely to teach us history. I believe they are vital for our day, because they contain parallels that are prophesy for our day, and when we see ourselves repeating the same mistakes that led to the destruction of those who thought they were righteous in the BoM, we are to wake up to our “awful situation” (Ether 8:24). Those who preach evil as good will be held accountable. 2 Nephi 15: 20 Wo unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light, and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! 2 Nephi 28:14 They wear stiff necks and high heads; yea, and because of pride, and wickedness, and ABOMINATIONS, and WHOREDOMS, they have ALL gone astray save it be a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by the precepts of men.

Maybe Sam was the son of Lehi's concubine wife BEFORE Lehi was commanded NOT to have them here in the Americas. Would that put Sam at a lower social level?
@littleredhen3218

Lehi didn't live polygamy. Many places in the Book of Mormon he is taught not to engage in the wicked abominations and whoredoms that were wickedly practiced in Jerusalem. God brought Lehi and his family out of Jerusalem for that reason. That he may raise up a righteous seed unto himself. He had to have His people taken out and away from that false tradition and start a new with God's chosen marriage system of Monogamy where the tender hearts of his daughters would not break and they die in sorrow like polygamy does to women. The children also lose confidence in their fathers which has been proven over and over and over throughout history including the early days of the Utah church practice of polygamy. Very damaging and curses follow those who practice polygamy.

I think your theory about Sam being handicapped some how is plausible. I've thought the same thing about Leah, the eldest daughter of Laban whom he tricked Jacob into marrying before Jacob could marry his beloved Rachel. Two reasons: Leah went along with the plot i don't thnk because she was diabolical like her dad, but because she may have been very innocent. Laban knew Jacob to be an honorable man and was capable of caring for both daughters And because polygamy was an optional lifestyle in that day. Both daughters would have been well taken care of by Jacob an d Laban knew this. He couldnt get Jacob to do this by his free will and choice so he trickef him into marrying Leah first. He knew Jacob wanted to marry Rachel. Just a thought.
